@dwcoffey
@dwcoffey 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching, Aaron! The first of these lights I bought came with a little cap that fits over the light sensor, so that one was easy....put the cap on the sensor and the light thinks it is dark all the time, so can be switched on and off at will. The subsequent lights I bought did not come with these caps, so, I've tried two ways and both work. On one, I took a bit of black paint and covered the light sensor lens. On the other, I covered the sensor with black electrical tape and trimmed it off to look nice. I suspect the paint will last longer outside, but both methods are working so far. I haven't tried this, but it might be worth a try....take a small lid from something, paint it to match your light (mine are white) and then stick it down over the light sensor with a bit of silicone....maybe paint the inside of the cap black to block all light. If you are having issues with a motion detector, I don't have any suggestions for that...these lights of mine are not equipped with motion detectors.

Good afternoon Dennis. I will give all the detail. I'm running into a dead end and I'm unable to find resolution to a electrical wiring job. I installed an attic vent fan and the only power in the attic was a line from a switch to a light fixture. There was no ground for the light or in the plastic junction box. I replaced the junction box to one that has a ground. I ran the 14/2 from the fan to the junction box. (I used red Cap's and as extra safety I wrapped the end of each and wires with electrical tape) Connected all ground with a pigtail and connected pigtail to ground screw. Connected all white/neutral wires and added a pigtail for the light. Connected all black/live wires and a pigtail for the light. I replaced the light fixture with one that uses a pull chain for on and off. Connected the neutral pigtail to the silver screw and connected the live wire to the brass screw. Turned on the circuit for the attic. The fan works perfectly, but the light will not work. Testing I did/tried: I tried a new light bulb still didn't work. I tried using the original light fixture, didn't work. I made new pigtails for white and black wires and cut off a little extra casing for each wire, to make sure there is contact. Still not working. Do you have any thoughts on possible issue?
@dwcoffey
@dwcoffey 3 жыл бұрын
Is the feed to the light coming from the switch only, or is there a feed into the light fixture box with the original hot leg running to the switch and back?
@yankeeownz9980
@yankeeownz9980 3 жыл бұрын
@@dwcoffey the feed goes to the light switch. Then a line is run from the switch to the light.
@dwcoffey
@dwcoffey 3 жыл бұрын
Sorry to rehash, just trying to make sure I completely understand.... The hot line comes into the light fixture box from the switch. Now the new 14/2 line runs from the fan to the light fixture box. Inside the light fixture box, you have tied together the white/neutral from the fan, the switch and the pigtail to the light fixture. Also tied together in that box are the black/hot from the fan, the switch and the black pigtail to the light fixture. Then the hot and neutral pigtaisl are connected to the light fixture. So the switch should be giving you power to both the fan and the light. You've tried 2 light fixtures and bulbs, so the problem is not likely to be the fixture or the bulb. If you have a volt meter, you could carefully check across the fixture terminals while the circuit is hot to be absolutely sure. If not, I think we can rule that out. So....since the fan is working, the only thing left is the pigtails for the light. Sounds like maybe one of the pigtail wires is not making contact where the 3 wires are tied together...either the hot or the neutral.
@yankeeownz9980
@yankeeownz9980 3 жыл бұрын
@@dwcoffey no need to go crazy over it Dennis haha I found out what I needed to do. I had to use 2 black/live pigtails from the cap and connect both to the screws on the light. This feeds constant power to the attic fan and light without having to turn off the light switch.

I installed an older motion dual spotlight to the side of my shop ( after it was replaced with a newer on on the house), and I connected an extension cord wired to the light and the other end plugged into an outlet inside the shop. I then wanted to set my light to stay on by switching it off and back on, and installed a light switch inline interrupting the HOT or BLACK wire to the switch. I can shut off the light, but, when I switch off, then on, it goes back into normal mode and does not stay on. I figured the black wire was the one to use to interrupt. Maybe it's the white wire then. I'm pretty sure the light system works once I figure this out. Ideas?

I'm not sure I understand, and it is very difficult to describe wiring through messages, but....if you only have one feed into a 2-way switch and 2 fixtures on that switch, your whites should go to the silver side of the switch and your blacks should go to the brass side of the switch....this includes your feed and your fixtures.

@dwcoffey

Thank you for watching, Jose! Mine was a sealed unit as the back was completely enclosed, so it could be mounted with no sealing at all other than a gasket to protect the wiring in the box. Do you wire the switch leg to the hot
@dwcoffey
@dwcoffey 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching, Josh! Hard to say, because it depends on how the fixture is wired. If it is a single fixture, single 2-way switch....typically you will switch both the neutral and hot. If it is a 3-way switch, you may just switch the hot leg.

I don’t have a ground wire coming out of my outlet. How do I found the flood light?
@dwcoffey
@dwcoffey 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Oscar, thank you for watching! If there is not a ground wire in your wiring, but you have metal a metal junction box, you can attach the green wire from the light to a screw in the junction box. If your box is plastic, you can just skip connecting the green ground wire.

@@dwcoffey , would lightning hit my floodlight for not grounding it?
@dwcoffey
@dwcoffey 3 жыл бұрын
It should not be a problem If there is no ground wire there, your previous fixture wasn't grounded either. This particular light fixture is all plastic, so grounding it is nearly pointless anyway.

Thanks for watching, James! Yes sir, that's correct. I'm hoping they live up to their claims and the LED bulbs last for years. Time will tell!

I have the same type of light but when I install the light and turn it on it stays on for 1 min and turns off why is that.
@dwcoffey
@dwcoffey Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching, Warren! There's a photo-eye on top of the light that senses day/night. If it is getting any light, that may be making the light turn off. I covered mine with a piece of black electrical tape and then the cap that came with the light.

@dwcoffey
@dwcoffey 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching, Loran. Do you only have white and black wires for the fixture? If so, connect them accordingly. If your fixture has a bare wire also, that is your ground and should be connected to the bare wire from your house wiring.
