Well done! The only way to improve water maker water is to freeze it and cover it with good Bourbon. 8 hours, 30 minutes for install. If I’m correct, give the prize to people in need that you meet along the way. We ran our water maker an hour everyday, never had a problem with the membrane. My brother ran his once a week and had to replace the membrane in less than a year.

I work for the coast guard and we end up drinking a lot of water maker made water lol. It’s strips a lot of the good minerals out of the water highly recommend getting a re-mineralizer of some sort or liquids drops. I notice the lack after awhile, While on ship.

Back in the dark ages (I'm talking 1970s) I owned a centre cockpit 45ft trimaran of a New Zealand Hartley design (or at least I think it was, the only other Hartleys I ever saw were 35ft). She was a bit of a beast and very basic, to say the least. I sailed her from Darwin to Fiji with the aid of a humongous but rather beautiful bronze compass, paper charts and a sextant. No other fancy navigational stuff on my boat, although I did have a depth finder and ship-to-shore radio that was only useful getting into or out of ports. I did have a small freezer and one tiny first-generation solar panel the size of a small bedroom window, but no lithium batteries, of course. A water maker? Well, no, I had two water tanks and the rest of my water was in a couple of hundred large plastic bottles stored in the outside hulls. Those were the days, I tell you.

Darwin to Fiji - against the wind? Unless you go N of PNG & through the Solomon's. Even then, the last few hundred miles would be upwind?
@leonaessens4399

You do know about tacking, surely. And no, I did not sail to Fiji in a straight line, or without stopping in other places. I did not go north of PNG although I had been there before. Came straight across the gulf (of Carpentaria) to Thursday Island. I've sailed across the gulf in both directions and on the trip to Fiji initially sailed south along the Australian east coast as far as Mooloolaba (just north of Brisbane). Then to New Caledonia and into the Pacific as far as Tonga. From there a little north-west to Pacific Harbour, Fiji. I found work in Suva and sold the boat a year later.

The 'no internet' bit would be a deal breaker for me 😆 With internet I feel I could do anything. I had no mechanical experience whatsoever when I decided to fix my motorcycle engine, which needed a gear cog replacement. To reach the gearbox the engine (and motorcycle) had to be completely dismantled, a fairly modern injection 4-cylinder. Anytime I had an issue or was unsure how to proceed the internet was there to ask. I was even able to do a valve adjustment, another thing most of my more mechanical inclined friends wouldn't do themselves. Cool to see you it worked and no sparks smoke or leaks when you flipped that switch 😁I hear one should keep some spare parts on the boat in case it breaks down in the middle of nowhere!

I consider myself pretty good with handyman type of stuff, and that would easily take me more then a day. Mainly because I would be so worried about leaking etc i would over engineer everything, lol. So my guess is 14ish hours total over 2 days.

Showed in the video they not only soldered the wires but they put the shrink tubing over top as well to protect from corrosion. I think that was smart to do both actually
