Thanks for the inspiration for installation of the bbqsmokermods' OKJ longhorn reverse flow baffle plate system. I like your solution of cutting across the top of the new baffle to fit under the existing grate mount next to the firebox. Removing grate mount, as suggested by bbqsmokermods, will greatly weaken the firebox and mostly cause further sagging which is a big complaint on the OKJ smokers. Good job and thanks again for the video.

You are very welcome. And yes, removing that grate support would definitely make the firebox sag. Honestly you would think as much as the new baffle costs. Bbqsmokermods would have that fixed so you don't have to cut anything. Sucks spending money on something that meant for the smoker u got, just to have to modify it when u get it haha

Nice vid, thank you! I did pretty much the same tuning plat mod with sheet metal. That gave room for ice trays! I live in Michigan and can easily do this, but I see you obviously live in a more temperate climate. In the winter, I lay trays of ice on the bottom plate and on the top racks, lay the meat in middle and voila…cold smoker. I am able to smoke and keep the temp in the safe zone below 40°F. Makes the best bacon you ever had. Keeping it under 40° means cooking in the pan and not in the smoker.

I sold it about 8 months ago and bought a old country bbq pits over and under from academy. Cheaper and all welded and way better than this okj

@syrtyce I havnt done any upgrades to the bbq pits over and under. Only thing I bought as a upgrade was a perfect smoke temp controller. But that is just for not having to baby sit as much.

how many inches did you cut off the plate?

I didn't really measure how much. It's gonna be different on each one I believe. Depending on where they welded the lip inside. The lip inside mine wasn't even from one end to the other. They welded the lip in at an angle so when I cut. And grinder to make it fit. One end I had to cut more off of. If I'm making sense.

It was reverse flow baffle plates. The baffle plates with holes in them are technically for standard offset. The reverse flow plates with holes doesn't make it a true reverse flow, is my take on it

Wouldn't the location of that water pan get sucked straight out of the exhaust pipe and do nearly nothing for the cook

In hindsight, ur probably right, but that's how they made it to go in that location, also the water pan hold alots of water, nearly 2 gallons, so maybe that why it so big to create alot of moisture so it don't suck all of it out the exhaust pipe. It worked well is all I know.

I wouldn't wanna do that. I sold my okj last month so no way of test fitting ur plate for a good fit.

@tetonw1 well I already had a pitboss pellet grill before okj. So when I sold the okj. I sold the okj cause honestly it was just too big for me and my family. Didn't need something that big. So I bought a weber 22" kettle and I love it.
