I'm surprised you didn't treat the rust on the floor. Even if it is only surface rust, it's important to treat and stop it.

Good eye on that….I agree and somehow I missed it.

Hey man, Love the videos! Currently fixing up a 2002 i bought a few years ago that took some water damage so your channel has been super helpful in the process. Any recommendations on replacing the cabin flooring? Finally got all the rust cleaned up but The rug i pulled up is unsalvageable. Using a hard rubber template from Gator for the back but can’t find anything for the cabin. Thanks In advance!

Can you comment on the "joists" that some install under the subfloor? Are they needed? Great video, thanks.
@drawersystems
@drawersystems Жыл бұрын
Great question! Considering this is a relatively small van compared to a Sprinter, I don't think adding the joists are 100% necessary under the subfloor. With that said the insulation will compress over time however since I use 3/4" plywood on top of it, the load is spread out over the entire surface. I'm doing a Sprinter build now and decided to add the joists under the plywood to help support the weight of everything since it's a much bigger area. I also added the joists in my current Sprinter build to ensure the floor is flat as I noticed it had areas that were a tad lower than others...keeping it flat and supported will make building the furniture easier in the future. Thanks for watching!

Hey man. Great job so far and I love the realistic explanation of thing - stuff doesn't always goes right! I have a ton of questions, but from a position of extensive constructive and DIY perspective, almost a brainstorming/spitballing idea. Looking to do a van in the future for retirement, after 2 houses and 2 trucks builds. Do you have a website or email for connection? can't wait to watch/connect/promote...

Chad, excellent job and great skills. Question about the fan install on the first van. When you cut the hole in the roof for the fan did you take the headliner out first and if so, how did you line up the hole in the roof and hole in the liner? Also what kind of frame did you put in the inside for the fan? Did you make a wood frame...what size wood?
@drawersystems
@drawersystems Жыл бұрын
Thanks Steve! Great question...the fan install was a pain in the butt. I took the headliner out, cut the hole in the roof and then put the headliner back in, traced the hole, took the headliner out and cut out the hole, then sealed up the HVAC ducting. While the headliner was out, I installed the lights and ran all the wires. In hindsight, I would have just drilled holes in the corners of where the fan cutout would be...going through the metal and the headliner. this way when I took the headliner out, I could have cut the hole and saved a bunch of time.

You should never run 110v in the same conduit with12v for several reasons. You can destroy sensitive components, have data errors and for safety concerns

I watched your first van project and liked how you installed the fan and puck lights. But i haven't seen what you did for this build, I was hoping to get more understanding on how you accomplished that. on video 3 have you compiled the headliner removal and installed fan and lights? It looks like you have lights...did you pull liner to install lights?
@drawersystems

Yes I removed the headliner to install the puck lights and run the wiring.

Great video, thanks so much! I'm doing the same build and I'm curious what you'll do with the ceiling? I'm debating keeping mine but the AC duct is in the way if I when I add a vent. What are your thoughts?
@drawersystems
@drawersystems Жыл бұрын
Thanks! I kept the ceiling but took out one of the back windows and replaced it with 3/16 with a side vent. It will be in the walk around video. In my last build I put the vent in the ceiling and kept the AC ducting with some modifications. Here’s the link if you haven’t seen it: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aaxdoM90y7fKZpc.html

That flooring needs room to expand with weather. When you put cabinets bed couch and outer on top it could restrict the movement and I've seen it buckle in the middle and then it all has to be replaced. That flooring is mentioned to be installed after everything is done
@drawersystems
@drawersystems Жыл бұрын
I definitely thought about that but since this van is so small, there is only about 2' x 3' of open space...almost the entire floor is covered. I am happy to report that I saw the van a few days ago and the floor looks like the day I delivered it to the customer...it survived the summer in Florida so I think it will be ok :)

Wasting time. Lol. I needed to fill the holes left from the bolts that secure the factory seats. In hindsight I should have just filled them with silicone or construction adhesive
@Opescuseme

What are those metal caps you used? Don’t the holes go all the way through? And if so would you still be able to fill with silicone and call it good? Wondering how to start mine. Thanks!

Wat were u welding in the beginning???
@drawersystems

If you’re talking about the tear down video I had to weld a large bolt to the top of another bolt that was completely stuck which was preventing me from removing the seat brackets.

What did you use in the beginning for covering/sealing the holes in the floor?

looking back, it was a waste of time...best to just use silicone or construction adhesive to fill the holes and move on.

@joeyt684

I noticed you covered a bunch of spots on the floor. With circles of blue tape. What were you covering? And just an fyi - kilmat only needs 25% coverage to work, but I expect more does no harm. Lastly, what is the purpose of the underlayment ontop of the plywood?
@drawersystems
@drawersystems Жыл бұрын
I was covering the holes left behind when I removed the seats….the bolts went all the way through the floor. In hindsight would have been easier to shoot silicone or another sealant directly into the holes. The wood flooring I used didn’t have a backing and required the underpayment to act as a buffer. I have since moved to use flooring that has it built in.

Only bad part of running electrical under floor is you have no access to either add or fix electrical problems in the wires under the floor. Example a wire gets hot and burns up, how do you replace it?
@drawersystems
@drawersystems Күн бұрын
Of course if you bury wires within the floor or a wall, then you have no way or a very hard time to access them. I try to always run an extra wire and leave it somewhere accessible in case I need to add something later on. Regarding your last comment, if the wires are all the correct size (for the application) and fused properly, there should be no or very little risk of burning up a wire. If a wire does burn up and it's under the floor or in a wall...it's likely that you will need to replace much much more than just the wire.
@tgland02494
@tgland02494 Күн бұрын
@@drawersystems very true however sometimes devices cause the problem with the wires. As an example my PCM malfunction caused the pig tail to melt. But I understand what you’re saying. I was looking at your build because I might be buying a E350 passenger van instead of a cargo van

Yeah my thing I’m trying to decide is to go with E-series E350 or Chevy 3500 express van. I order and ship E-series parts to people in Canada and some parts are getting hard to find. The only good thing Ford still builds an E-series cut away for ambulances.
