Dude your build is so clean and personalized, I love it. I’ve got a standard STi short throw shifter that came with my WRX but hate how crunchy it sounds. Looks like replacing the shifter bushings is the move - great vid 👍🏼

Myself and a friend just did this to my car about 2 weeks ago and I will tell you it is worth the money. Especially when paired with a weighted (Raceseng) shift knob! 👌🏾

I did this to my old WRX and it made a huge difference in the feel of the shifter (it was super sloppy) The STI I just bought had a kartboy short throw shifter and a set of bushings with it that the previous owner never installed. Looking forward to getting them on

Had under floor shifter mods installed on my 2015 WRX too, another great mod I whole heartedly agree with you regardless whether drive an STI or WRX VA Series Subaru. And now this video reminds me there are some additional transmission urethane bushings I should do. We may have different models but the same modifying principle applies too. And the great and resoundingly true thing is all the little drive train mods accumulate to become very transformative they really do. Reducing "softness" in mounts and bushings reduces losses increases responsiveness which makes driving just better, what you say is true. Lastly the interesting thing is that it gets expensive following you but I must say I have a better Subie in part from mods you have done to your Subaru. So I guess I owe you a sincere thank you!

The transmission, cross member bushing and pitch stop make a huge difference especially on hard fast shifts. The subframe bushing and differential bushings help on hard cornering with throttle. I kept my motor bushing stock which helps keep it a bit more sane,

@@MachuPichuu Good to know. Pitch stop and brace check ✅. Shifter stop check ✅. Short shift adapter plate and bushing check ✅. Transmission support check ✅. Rear differential support check✅. Engine mounts check✅ Carbon fiber drive shaft check ✅. Whiteline urethane transmission bushings in the mail. So I have pretty much switched most of the soft and mushy OEM driveline stuff out. Crisper shifts, more responsive and it is still sane. Maybe not the money spent but the driving/shifting experience night and day from OEM. Cheers

Did these plus the crossmember poly mounts (from Perrin IIRC) on my STi 6 speed swapped Bugeye. It was fairly loud so I never noticed the added NVH but the tightness of the shifter was great. Now with my '13 STi, the shifter has so much slop I need to do this ASAP. Was a bit sad to see you finally sold the STi.

Just installed mine on Labor Day. Started at 1 pm was finished at 8 pm 🤣😂 I personally love the increased whine and nvh - reminds me of the Subaru rally cars in dirt rally

the factory sti short throw is among the best youre gonna get just throw some upgraded bushings from either cobb or kartboy and youre good

I’m on about hour 2 of fighting with those rear bushing bolts. One goes in super smooth. I can’t get the other one started.

That rear bushing was nuts. I was struggling for 2 hours as well. Then I got a suggestion off iwsti that worked within 5 mins. Get 2 six inch extensions on the end of your 12mm socket and then hand thread it. The leverage might let you angle the bolt the correct amount.

probably the best mod. shifting is easier and more reliable. did you get any audible noise after install? my cobb bushings were noisy, wondering if maybe I didn't add enough grease?

Did you have any issues with how tight you did the bolt on the bushing? I replaced those two bushings and the 2 linkage bushings above the large one you did. They seemed to be super tight and i had to keep the bolts fairly loose to not make it difficult to shift. Mine had some rust on the metal so not sure if that contributed to the issue. the specs said 7 and 11ft/lbs but i didn't even do them that tight. The linkage bushing removed quite a bit of the left over slop but a real nightmare to replace. Not sure if i need to give them some time to break in.

When I removed the stock bushings, I was surprised how little torque there was on both front and rear. I was easily able to break them loose with a wrench. I didn’t over tighten and just made them snug, very much how the stock bolts felt. There is no way to get a torque wrench in there, so you just have to use your best judgment. But they don’t need to be overly tightened.

@@Scoobyfreak86 I had the oppsosite problem. The bolts were so rusted that they required a ton or torque to get off. This was from a 2016 with only 50k miles. The linkage bushings was also so tight I had to use a hammer to align up the holes. Some mentioned finger tight then quarter turn but I can't thread any of the bolts by finger, ha. Based on your 1 finger gear shift, I probably need to loosen them a bit more. Then maybe add a bit of locktight for safe measure.

Hey just did this install on my 2020 sti. I absolutely hated the nvh from the rear bushing. It was almost louder than the exhaust lol. In the end, I went down there and replaced the rear bushing with the oem and holy smack I love the set up. If you get a rattle in 5th and 6th, remember to zip tie the reverse lockout cable to the shifter linkage cause it will make the cable rub on the driveshaft and cause huge issues if not fixed!

Probably unrelated but I notice slight rattle in 4th gear only lol might have dealer look at it bc still got that warranty

Dave T. Just a little bit more firmness through each gear. I think the biggest thing was going from 3rd to 4th. You would feel each snap 3rd -> neutral -> 4th. Without the bushing it, if you were aggressive with the shift, it felt like 3rd -> 4th. At first it felt a bit unnatural but if you slow your pace, you feel each step.

Did you try any other short shifters prior to the kart boy? I’m definitely wanting to upgrade mine but I haven’t really been exposed to any short throws in person. So I’m kinda just watching videos and reading as much as possible to see what others opinions and experiences have been like with their builds.

I’ve only tried kartboy. Honestly, it’s the best option. Cobb has an adjustable ssk, but in my mind, it’s just more moving parts to go wrong. I prefer something solid. I had a kartboy in my wrx as well and had a great experience. I would do kartboy over and over again.

@@Scoobyfreak86 yeah kart boy, Perrin and billet works seem to be the two I see spoken about positively more often than others. So those are the ones I have interest in researching. Obviously everyone experience and opinions will subjective. I’m tryin to find any objective features that would align more with preferences. This kart boy height is where I would want it. Ive seen others and they’re too low for my liking.

Did you zip tie the reverse cable underneath? If not, that noise is the cable hitting the driveshaft.

Ill go check but I putted just one near the resr bushing ill put more near the front. I read somewhere that these make some whining on 1st and second accélération

Yes. You are adding stiffer bushings so it will add some nvh.

It does not. Wrx is a different transmission. I would go with the boomba for the wrx.

Finally someone explained what the noise was!! Ty!! I recently installed the kart boy shifter and bushings and there was a whistle and noise in 2nd gear. although mine is loud and unbearable.. did I do something wrong?? Some days its louder. Other days its more quiet..

Make sure that reverse cable is tied up out of the way of the driveshaft!

man ive always wanna add the complete kartboy shifter thing…but i read alot of comments saying its gonna make noise..i shouldnt be hearing it with an after market exhaust like r400 right??😂

Yes you will hear the more audible noise. I have a fairl loud exhaust snd it’s noticeable. But it’s a great addition to the car overall. The feel and overall sound it provides makes the driving experience that much more rewarding. If you want a similar result, just don’t install the rear bushing. Supposedly it gives you the firmness without the added noise.

Hi, just got my kartboy and bushings installed but now it seems it has a whinning sound at 1st and 2nd gear. Did you have this issue too? If so, any remedy? Seems like a common issue when i look online but cant find a solution other than "go back to oem bushings" lol

Nvh (noise vibration harshness). It happens when you install any stiffer bushing. If you installed the shifter as well, you need to zip tie the reverse cable out of the way of the driveshaft.

Yes. The whirl you are hearing is the reverse cable hitting the driveshaft.

I notice a bit of winning, but what I really notice is when I'm cruising down a hill or something where I'm not on the gas but in gear, there's more overall noise, like a white noise. Do you experience anything like that? Sorry also noob lol

I would take it to a shop if you are not comfortable doing this (or any install). Unfortunately, I do not do installs on other peoples cars.

Do you need to install the bushings? what is the purpose of the bushings?

You don’t have to install them. You can just run the shifter. The bushings remove the slop left over due to the stock rubber bushings.

No mods will “void” warranty. But if something goes wrong with that specific part modified, they can certainly deny warranty. Depends on the dealer as well.
