12 cores, 24 threads... This Intel Xeon E5-2697 v2 is going to be a monster in Edzel's new editing workstation. What does Linus think of it after a short test?

Hasn't the E5-2697 v2 got a Max Turbo Frequency of 3.50GHz? Am planning on buying one but if it can't manage over 3GHz per core then I might go for something with less cores and more frequency.
@DJ_Dopamine
@DJ_Dopamine 3 жыл бұрын
@@mabeSc That's not all-core turbo. You will get up to 3.5GHz on one or two cores... depending on the load. The all-core sustained turbo is what matters and that seems to be about 3.1 GHz when you are gaming (for example).
@mbwh1582
@mbwh1582 3 жыл бұрын
@@mabeSc I have one, and I can tell you this: All core turbo is 3.0GHz, and these xeon's tend to be decently overclockable. I ran one for like half a year at 115.5BCLK (ty Rampage IV Extreme) at stock voltage and it handled it no problem. I even ran prime95 small FFTs for a full day without issues. It's a good little chip, and also only €100 on Aliexpress right now
@mabeSc
@mabeSc 3 жыл бұрын
@@mbwh1582 Thank you for the info and also the guy up! I was very interested in BCLK overclocking of this CPU and I did understand all of this Turbo frequencies on such high-core count CPUs. Just got back into PCs after over 2 year of complete lack of interest. Upgraded my PC as well. Got a damn nice bargain for a GTX 980Ti , extra 8GB of RAM and a new CPU (i5 6500 - £38 for the CPU). Just planning on getting these Xeons mostly out of my curiosity regarding their ability to OC and also as a way to futureproof my PC (well I know , Ryzen). But still a nice Xeon V4 could still be worth it assuming I get it for a nice price. Now , regarding V4s , do you know if there are good motherboards out there for it? Something that might allow for BCLK OCing? I know many new motherboards stopped supporting BCLK with newer BIOS updates , is there a way to flash a modified BIOS to allow for OCing? Also regarding coolers , is it easy to find them around or should I just get one from Aliexpress alongside with the CPU?
@mbwh1582

@@mabeSc From what I've seen x99 Haswell Xeon's don't like much ore than 105 MHz BCLK, while Broadwell Xeon's tend to top out in the 103 to 104 MHz BCLK range. On my x79 boards, I run the latest bioses (x79 Deluxe and Rampage IV Extreme) with no issues. Both do well over 110 MHz BCLK without dropping devices. Currently this is my best properly stable config incl. CPU-Z Benchmark numbers: valid.x86.fr/1qsdxw

@fifthgear93 10 жыл бұрын
AbuBakr Akram Yeah right. Intel pushed Tri-Gate transistors. Intel pretty much does all the R&D that other chip manufacturers benefit from. Nvidia, AMD, Qualcomm, etc. Intel is soon gonna push SiliconGermanium (SiGe) as a building material for transistors in order to get beyond 14nm. And that's a big deal. Intel has always been the leader in these things. It just so happens that GPUs have higher rates of performance increases from generation to generation compared to CPUs. This doesn't mean that Intel are just sitting on their lazy asses, it's quite the opposite actually. CPUs have reached that mature level where it's really hard to increase performance without going beyond silicon. GPUs have not reached maturity, hence their high performance increases generation to generation. GPU technology right now is where CPUs were 15 years ago, meaning GPUs can vastly improve on current building materials trough architectural optimizations. CPU's however cannot.

fifthgear93 They sucked monkey balls in the Pentium III an 4 era though. The Athlon and Athlon 64 were legendary. Thanks to Intel paying OEMs to solely sell Intel hardware, they increased their R&D budget by such a large margin that it's impossible for any other company to touch their technology. As soon as they will gain a monopoly position, the US government will take them down a notch, just like they did with Microsoft back in the late 90's, probably.

you know that AMD manufacturers every chip in every new gen console? That's gonna keep them alive for the next 5 years ar least. When AMD goes down, Nvidia remains the only manufacturer of dedicated graphics cards, so they're going to be closed by the US' cartel office. But I'm not sure about Intel in that case.

4 cores is over kill on a lot of games still but anyone building a new pc would be crazy not to use a quad core. I really think the best bang for buck is the 8350. 'Total Memory: 65536MB - I guess they round gigs of ram'. Actually 65536MB is exactly 64GB on x86 architecture. The ISO standard might be for there to be 1000MB to the GB, and so many systems (like linux and mac) convert to this, but x86 computers (all modern desktop systems) have 8 bits to the byte, so any memory must be a multiple of 2^8 = 256. Therefore the closest approximation to 1000 you can get is 256*4 = 1024. 64*1024 = 65536.

Actually AMD processors give you better Price/Performance than Intel. The i7 4770K performs 1% faster than the FX 8350. The i7 4770K costs 56% more than the FX 8350
@GrandDesignsSims
@GrandDesignsSims 10 жыл бұрын
LOSTUK incorrect. The 4770k is a far more powerful processor however it all depends on how well the chip scales. In raw performance, a 4670 beats the living crap out of an 8350, a 4770 is just miles beyond that. In gaming however, its mostly how quickly the chips can handle small bits of data to and from the GPU. This is where AMD wins out by a small margin.

The Hyper 212 Evo is way cheaper than both of those watercoolers. I personally own the H110 and I'm very happy with it. But if you want you can get the H60/H80 aswell. Got the H60 in my 2nd PC and were able to oc my i5 2500k to 4.6GHz with max temps of 70°C on full load.

***** Yeah, I currently have the 212 but the temps are about 35-40C on idle, and about 50-55C on load. Ran Prime95 and the temperature went up to 100C... I'm just wondering if the H110 or any other complete water cooler would be more effective in cooling and more quiet.

JMM I went from a hyper 212 evo to a custom watercooling build and I could increase my OC from 4.4ghz to 4.8ghz (took 1.37 volts and the temps reached 90 for a couple of seconds) I have it on 4.6ghz now with the OCCT stress test reaching 70 degrees max with idles around 22 with an ambient temp of 19-20. (all degrees are in celsius). I have 1100RPM fans and a dc-lt pump (pump is running at 6 volts) and I don't hear a thing (other than my non-WC gpu).

AIO coolers are gimmicks, they are only slightly better at cooling than good air coolers (Dark Rock Pro, NH-D15, for example) but they are louder and prone to failures.

Hey buddy, nice demonstration. I do have Asus P9X79 Pro motherboard with the exact same CPU Xeon E5 2697 V2 With just increasing the Bclk I could only achieve 103 and slight voltage modifications I could hardly reach a 107 Bclk without any performance increment in actual rendering work. That's when I realized some parameters -like the Turbo enable- revert to the opposite setting by playing with other -related- parameters. What else have you played with to achive a 113 BClock? Even 110 will be awasome but I don't want to tweak wrong or unnecessary voltage values when someone has already achieved this high.

ExplodeintheTNT A titan is not even a gaming card. It was made more for video editing simply because you cant use the full amount of vram while gaming. Not unless you go beyond 4k which 1 single titan won't handle. Ofcourse people with a lot of money get it because it is the single most powerful gpu but you can get much better performance/$ by simply going 980 SLI or such.
