In 1953 the CIA lead a coup against Iran's democratically-elected prime minister, Mohammad Mosaddeq. In his place America and Britain helped install a king. That regime came crashing down in 1979, and Iran has been suspicious of America ever since. The United States subsequently supported Iraq during the Iran-Iraq War, providing both intelligence and arms to Saddam Hussein. Interestingly, Iraq's brutal dictator turned out to be a brutal dictator. We went to war with him during the early 90s and again in 2003. To the great surprise of the Bush administration, ousting the strongman has not transformed Iraq into a liberal democracy.
Similarly, when Nobel Peace Prize recipient Barack Obama bombed Libya to oust Muammar Gaddafi, the vacuum of power invited more strife and violence.
During the Cold War the United States provided support to a group of anti-Soviet Islamist fighters in Afghanistan called the Mujaheddin. Their ranks included Osama bin Laden and they would eventually spawn the Taliban the United States would fight in 2001.
Our attack on Syria is just the latest development in a long series of American interventions in the Middle East and it's worth considering the rubble, chaos, and ally-cum-enemies that often accompany our adventures in the region.

@@vcostello712 I agree, except in EU4 you have a combination of annexing provinces and proceeding to puppet smaller nations. Which is how the violence goes to solve the problem. The US is constantly winning the war just to do the equivalent of offering the losing country war reps and sometimes doing an old toppling of a government. it doesn't even release independent nations.

+neftv1 The problem is neither the voters, the media nor the parties... There's 46 political parties in the US fighting for power on a national level right now. The issue however is the first past the post system. If you guys switch to a proportional system where you can have *several* different parties cooperating (and whenever someone isn't cooperating there's more then one other party to seek support from to achieve your goals) you'd get a more nuanced political debate and probably better governance as a result too.
@raulpetrascu2696

Love the map but Ok few things to correct here. 1) You could have started in the pre-WW2 era with all of the US "interventions" in Latin America and the Caribbean. 2)Actually the "we supported Osama" in the 80's against the soviets is a myth. We supported certain groups which all but 1 later became the "Northern Alliance" (which aided the US 2001 invasion and opposed the Taliban) and one joined up with the Taliban. However Osama only took Islamic money back then and according to former CIA officers in the region, that Osama hated Americans back then. Who we supported became the Northern Alliance, who Pakistan and the Arab League supported became the Taliban as well as Osama. 3) 1991 was not a US intervention, but a UN backed operation where even enemies of the US like Syria sent troops, which the UN put all under US command, in fact Schwarzkopf had an Egyptian General on his staff at the time as his Arab military and cultures expert. So not exactly a "US intervention" but a UN operation under US control like the Korean War 4) the 2001 was a response to being attacked, we were attacked and struck back against those who did it. That was a reprisal, not an intervention.'' and the biggie 5)also the Shah and Iran in 1953 is not that simple as it was a proxy fight between the soviets and the US and questionable if the government overthrown was "democratically elected" as it gets very confusing. To say Mossadegh was democratically elected is stretching the definition of the term (as the Parliment restricted voting rights to certain political classes, and other things). Also the shah was in power the whole time, Mossadegh was the Prime Minister. Mossadegh, as PM tried to force the Parliament to hand over more power to him from the Parliament and the Shah. The moved that convinced the Shah Mossadegh, who was popular, had to go, was when he attempted to get the Parliament to hand over all powers over the Army and Police to him without an oversight, and the remove the Parliament and the Shah from any authority over the Army and Police. At the same time Iran had an Oil Crisis and there were mass protests against Mossadegh, and his government by the Pro-Shah parties and groups. Further at least 3 Generals, plus numerous members of the Parliament approached the CIA with the Coupe idea as a way to stop Mossadegh's attempts to seize all power for himself. This is what convinced the Shah to act, as Mossadegh was sacking senior officers and officials in an attempt to take over what the Parliament refused to give to him in his own soft coupe against the Shah. Plus the US coupe actually failed and the Shah fled, it was the Shah's sister, Princess Ashraf, who actually overthrew Mossadegh (though the she shah's signatures were on everything, she was the behind it) and had Mossadegh arrested. The communist and Socialist parties, under prodding from the Soviets (who were back door supporting the pushing Mossadegh's attempts to seize power as they thought they could control him) rose up in protest and rioted. However they turned on Mossadegh after they realized he was not going to go their way and wanted all the power for himself. The Princess then got the Army under the command of General Fazlollah Zahedi to put down the Protests. She also organized the Pro-Shah parties and political movements to counter protest and to attack and riot in support of the Shah and the Army. One of the positives out of this was major liberal reforms under the Shah like giving women the right to vote (well first all men, and then a few years later all Women too), right to custody, equal treatment in divorce, etc. He also reduced the power religion in government as part of his secularizing sweeping reforms. The revolution that overthrew him came out of pro-Religious zealots in the 1960's who wanted a Sharia run state including the revoking of all women's rights. The movement became the organized opposition to the Shah which would overthrow the Shah in 1979. While the communists and socialists did also participate (with Soviet Money and support) in 1979, because the Religious were the only organized group, they were the ones in Charge of the group and then the Ayatollah's dispensed with their allies once they seized power. But the overthrow in 70 was more due to the Secular Reforms and the Soviets wanting to oust a US ally in their Proxy War which then backfired on the Soviets. Once again Iran was not that simple and not exactly as you portray it.

Michael Cohen Really? How the fuck could you get everything wrong in one long comment? I don't even know where to begin debunking this comment full of ignorance. Supported Osama a myth when US money was given to Bin Laden through Pakistan? Most Mujaheddin joined Northern Alliance when in reality they formed the Taliban after the war? 1991 not a US intervention when it was spearheaded by the US? 2001 in self defense when you attacked the Taliban and not Al Qaeda hiding in Pakistan? Oh Lord how can someone be this stupid is beyond me.

I found this trying to find history on what the heck went on with our intervention in the Middle East, and from this it sounds like we supported and helped establish the same dictators/terrorists that we are now trying to remove... If anyone knows a video more detailed than a joke video, that’d be much appreciated. I like the idea of intervention (Yes, I am an American Imperialist.), but it seems our government is too incompetent to do it properly.

It's true that the US has a terrible record of choosing where and when and how to intervene. However there are some success stories such as South Korea would be a giant death camp just like North Korea had it not been for the US. Also Taiwan, Ukraine, the baltics would already be enslaved. Berlin air lift. Marshall plan. Japan reformed and rebuilt. Panama canal still open.

What successes? The Germans had no chance of invading US soil. Also, because America entered WW1 it ended in the humiliating treaty of Versailles which enabled Hitler to rise. America entered WW2 because of Pearl Harbor (they say) but Pearl Harbor was America's fault for being involved too much in the Pacific in the first place, and America worsened the relations by restricting Japanese assets and trade. Even IF the US had to avenge against Japan, why then attack Germany? WW2 ended with the US having aided the murderous Soviet regime with much power and money (foreshadowing the Cold War) Kuwait was also America's fault for aiding Saddam Hussein early on. The US should cancel all foreign bases and military aid already.

You've correctly identified the problem: we leave their families alive to hold a grudge.

fakecubed except for the fact that killing them would be violation of U.N law. What we can do is end the cycle of returning, destroying, returning. What we should do is just leave the middle East, bring all troops back. Let them figure out their own problems in the way that they wish to decide.

I'm fine with containment, if that's actually what we can commit to doing. The problem is we let them into our own countries, they have more kids than we do, and then our countries become like their countries with all the same violence and lack of liberties. As for the UN, I couldn't give a shit what they think about anything, and "UN law" does not supersede American law and never will. Literally nothing the UN says or does can have any affect on American law, which is the only law that applies to the United States of America.

fakecubed even if Congress, oh ya know, ratifies U.N law? Plus, there is a difference between domestic and international law, which is something trump (and most Republicans) don't understand.

If and when Congress and the President choose to make UN-proposed laws into American laws, those are American laws, and they can be altered or repealed through the usual process, or challenged and struck down in US courts. "UN law" cannot and never will supersede the US Constitution or laws passed by Congress and signed by the President. Democrats and other globalists don't seem to understand national sovereignty or the supremacy of the US Constitution.

Just a question: What exactly were we supposed to do in Libya? Gaddafi was losing, he would be defeated one way or the other and the chaos would happen anyway. The only way to prevent this would be to join Gaddafi
