In the full interview recorded at Silicon Valley Comic Con, SIDEWALKS host Richard R. Lee interviews Jerry Mathers about his early start in show business at age 2; getting the role of "The Beaver;" his favorite episode; and why we haven't seen episodes of the sequel series, "The New Leave It to Beaver," on TV anymore.
** Richard's note to viewers watching the interview**
I did a slip of the tongue when I said "Jerry MATTERS." I didn't even realized I said that. I do know his name ... especially NOW! Many fans have commented on that. LOL. I try to do a good interview for a general audience, as well as fans. Honestly, I wish I had more time to prepare, but unfortunately, we don't know who we are going to interview that day. I asked them at their respective booths and surprisingly they both said "yes." A minute later, I am on-camera with Jerry (Tony followed soon after). Many things are going through my mind, as well as structuring an interview (and episode) on the fly. Of course, this is not an excuse, but hopefully an understanding on what's happening during these interviews. Regardless, I really enjoyed talking to these two. I am a fan of the "Leave It to Beaver" series, although it has been a while since I watched a full episode. As a kid, I grew up watching the show. These two are living legends!!!! Fortunately, there are some people who like the interviews, and there are others who can get pass the "Matters" part. I completely understand. As somebody wrote previously in a comment, I'm a lunkhead. I'm embarrassed that my mispronunciation destroyed viewers enjoyment. I welcome your comments, and I am not afraid on hearing your honest comments. Seriously, your comments makes me a better interviewer. I hope I will get a chance to interview Jerry again. I will mention to him that I made a mistake during this interview and the fans' comments that followed. One last thing, a reminder (mainly to me), Jerry MATHERS!!! Thanks for reading, Richard, Co-Host / Executive Producer ***

My brother and I, may he rest in peace, started watching Leave it to Beaver from the very first broadcast, until they were canceled and then we started watching reruns, I still watch reruns to this day. My brother and I never had a mother and father at home so we adopted Beaver Cleaver's family as our family. There was always a moral to every story, it showed kids how to be respectful towards others especially adults. Today many kids have no respect for anyting. A my opinion it was the best TV show, my brother and I watched on a 19 inch black and white screen. Today is March 6th 2022 oh, tomorrow March 7th marks the day that my brother passed away, 12 years ago.

Watched them as a kid growing up in the late '50's and '60's. Watching them now. Stories we can relate to. Seems the Beaver was always getting into trouble, but usually due to peer pressure from Gilbert and Larry. Kids can learn some good morals from the show and others of the era, unlike today's t.v. trash. Younger people prob don't realize that Hollywood actually had decency and morality in those days as did society as a whole. Is it a coincidence that the two have slid so far since then? What we let into our minds eventually comes out in our behaviors. Anyway, thanks to all involved in making the show one of the all time greats!

It was somewhat sad when Jerry said all the episodes of "The New Leave it to Beaver" were destroyed. I thought that was an TBS production. And I would love to see the Movie of the Week (I think it was 1977 - I was overseas with the army) when "Still the Beaver" came out but that was destroyed, too. It's funny that Tony Dow didn't mention that in his interview that all those episodes were destroyed.

I read in TV Guide years ago that some of the shows for LITB were actually taken from things that had happened to members of the cast or crew that worked on the show. I do not know if that is true or not. There were a lot of lessons to be learned about life from that show. that is what I really like about it and always have. I am about 8 months younger than Jerry Mather and I remember that show very well. My kids have watched it and some of my grand kids as well. I think it was the best show of that type on TV back then and better that the trash sitcoms on TV for the past 20 years or more.

Yes, I'm embarrassed about the mispronunciation of his last name name. I wished he and Tony Dow (RIP) corrected me on camera, but the place was loud. But beyond the mistake, it was really a joy and highlight to do an unexpected interview with him. It was quick: asked him and 30 seconds later I'm doing a profile interview for new and old fans. So many things were going through my head at the moment to conduct an interview (without any pre-planning), but I do wish I said his last name right. Thanks for watching. -- Richard

I watched your interview with Tony Dow first, and you referred to Jerry as "Jerry Matters." I then watched your interview with Jerry, and you still called him "Jerry Matters." That's not a slip of the tongue. That's being clueless about who you're interviewing. It was obvious you knew nothing about Leave it to Beaver or the two leads. Might I suggest you actually bone up about the people at these cons before you approach them for an interview? It would at least make it less awkward for you and the viewer.
