An introduction on my future plans to demonstrate the use of foil to achieve a natural metal finish on model aircraft. This will take a few video's to show how I do this. Part one and two to follow soon. This video does not show how to do it. It explains why and the pros and cons of the technique.

Absolutely outstanding! I'm going to have to give this a try. A lot of painted bare metal finishes are decidedly ordinary when one considers how much effort and hassle is involved.

Very cool man, just watched the longer video on how you did this and had to see the whole plane done. This looks awesome. You definitely put in a lot of work with this. I hope your channel does well

Just a thought would something like a clear self levelling gloss coat even out the rough texture before foiling ?

Great job on both G-IRTY and the Mustang Richard. My vote for foiling would be Airfix's 1:48 EE Lightning. Other post-war British aircraft were painted High Speed Silver - but the Lightning was too high speed for paint! Another option would be a 1:72 B.2 Canberra done up as an early production US B-57A, or an RB-57 if there is a kit out there.

Thanks Phil. I guess I could have a look at the 1/48th scale Airfix Lightning, or the Trumpeter 1/32 scale ( I know it has issues). 1/72nd scale is too small for this technique IMHO. Was the Lighning exposed metal all over though? I noticed the one at Duxford has part painted wings?

@@RichardsModellingAdventures I'll check - I've got a lot of reference material on the Lightning. I know that it was mostly aluminium with some steel and a little titanium. It certainly had panels of different shades and lustre.

Hi Richard, love your work and the quality of the finish on your models. I'm with you in the weathering thing, it can be too overdone and clumsy resulting in an almost caricature like rendition of the subject, but what you do is very nice. Anyway, I'd be very interested in learning how you foil an aircraft, and if you're looking at doing another Spit I'd look at Spit Mk.IX MJ250 coded UF-Q of 601 sqn based in southern Italy 1944. She was silver overall, but may have been painted silver so you will need to do some research. Another subject, which might require some interpretation, is Wg Cdr Tom Neil's Spitfire IX when he was attached to the USAAF as a liaison officer. He pinched the aircraft and stripped it back to bare metal to hide it's identity, his book 'Silver Spitfire' tells the story.

Fantastic info. Thank you so much. This sort of information exchange is one of the reasons why I started this channel. I will do my best to get some content going on how to foil asap. PS MJ250 is on my list, It's hard to know for sure if it was painted or not but if the info is so hard to confirm I'm quite happy to just go for it. This can be said for many WW2 aircraft I guess. Ill have a look at Tom Neil's Spit too, I watched an interview with him on KZfaq a while ago where he was thinking of ditching in the sea to dispose of it. There is always the "What if you owned your own Spitfire" option, where anything goes ? One way or another if I do decide to the foil the Spit. ( I probably will) I will just do it and worry about markings after. Thanks again

Hi Richard, great to see someone else using this technique. The finish on your 1/24th scale "Pony" looks fantastic 👏. You might find "Jenesis Modelling & Design" channel of interest as well. She does great foil work in 1/48 scale. Ive finished around 16 or 17 kits in foil over the last 10 years or so, all in 1/72 scale. To be honest It's been a bit of an obsession, and it's certainly been a learning process. Over this time 'Ive used some fairly strange building approaches as I've tried to come to grips with the material. Some from lack of confidence in the application process ( Knife skills etc.), some from pure modelling ignorance and some necessitated by the nature of the foil itself. I always complete all the painted elements of a build before applying any foil to avoid having to apply a mask over the foil. After painting I will apply a mask to the painted edge and then trim the foil to the masked edge. When I started I tended to apply the foil to large areas at a time, but as I gained more confidence I found foiling panel for panel a better approach. A bit more tedious, but to my mind a better over all result . I've got to a stage now where I will use this approach even on older kits with raised panel and rivet lines. Some parts will always be problematic, like spinners and wing tips, and after a few substandard results I've come to the conclusion that painting these parts is probably the better option. In regards to " Metal " paints I know there are a lot of exotic products out there but I have achieved very pleasing results with Tamiya "Metallic Silver " rattle cans ( sorry I can't remember the product code off hand ) without the need for specialised thinners and primers, and the finish is extremely durable. Apologies for rattling on but as there are so few of us travelling this path I rarely get the opportunity to have decent conversations regarding this approach. If you are interested I have detailed all my foiling trials and tribulations on the " Airfix Tribute Forum " Works in Progress thread under the user name dean 2365. The very best of luck with your KZfaq channel. I look forward to the future videos of your foiling adventure. 🍻 Dean.

@@RichardsModellingAdventures Hi Richard, unfortunately I'm a bit of a Social Media fogey and don't have a Facebook account, but I have sent an email to your KZfaq email account. I love what you've done with the Spit and Mustang but all modern Airfix aircraft kits have that horrible rough skin texture that make the finished kit look like a model of the real thing which had been cast in concrete.
@RichardsModellingAdventures
@RichardsModellingAdventures 2 ай бұрын
Yes but not all of it. In the case of the Spitfire it’s the large parts like the wings and fuselage
@antonrudenham3259
@antonrudenham3259 2 ай бұрын
@@RichardsModellingAdventures Yeah, the parts that were finely finished alloys in reality and that are highly visible when complete. I'm not sure what process Airfix use that renders their parts rough but it is avoidable as witnessed even in very old Hasegawa and Matchbox kits. I'm confused.
