It's so surprising that while Quixel started out as an Adobe PS plugin company, that it was Allegorithmic that ended up being bought out by Adobe. Props to Quixel team for continuing to carve out their own space in the industry.

As much as this is an awesome tool for background stuff, i really miss being able to load up my character and give them a go. I'm also curious to know if you guys intend to bring back other functions that worked particularly well with custom models, like the material id masks, the normal detection stuff that helped us add things like weathering, ndo, etc. (although, now that i think about it, ndo seems kinda pointless when we can just work directly with displacement and export the normals generated by it..)

I'm confused with the channel packing feature. Channel packing only works with greyscale texture files and alpha channels as far as I know. So is it possible to channel pack a roughness, metallic and AO texture into the one RGB file using the Export option in Quixel? So I would have my one diffuse colour texture map, one normal map, and one channel packed texture map (containing these three packed greyscale maps - roughness, metallic and AO). 5 maps in total, but contained in 3 texture files. Please help me understand this, it's twisting my melon man!
@theadnart1

Yes it is possible, and you've described how channel packing works pretty well :) Mixer and Bridge both have a channel packing system where you can pack any set of grayscale textures into one texture, and it can be an RGB or RGBA texture also.

Looks great. I don’t want to learn it until I have an answer to a question you may not know the answer to. :) In Suite, you had (included in the price) lots of scanned in PBR materials to use to create the magic. I know the plan is that Mixer will replace Suite, but all I ever see is it using materials form Megascans (which needs a subscription). When Mixer replaces Suite, will it require a subscription to Megascans, or will it have lots of materials (like suite did)?

Jonathan Holmes The materials that suite comes with are more than just useful. Almost everything you do starts with, or uses, some of the provided materials. If mixer doesn’t have them, or only has a few, or relies on a Megascans subscription, it won’t be a replacement for suite, is what I mean. I’m not saying it won’t be (or isn’t already) a superb product, but I’m only interested in replacing suite. :)

@theadnart1
@theadnart1 5 жыл бұрын
@@blenderguru Agreed. I think Mixer's biggest challenge is to push the concept of layers to the next level for a texturing software, and we already have a few key features in the roadmap that will tackle this problem. The Mask Stack was the first step, and we can't wait to reveal more other key features!
@Intercepto
@Intercepto 5 жыл бұрын
@@blenderguru I don't think that is a big problem for majority of work that artists do. Personally I still use classic material editor in Max because it is efficient and doesn't take a ton of space... and a lot of Max artists that I know still do. Layers are usually more organized than node based systems. When you start overdoing stuff with node based systems it just becomes too complex and usually only artist that worked on it knows what stuff does exactly. Worst mistakes that people do when developing the software, and I've experienced this over my 15years in VFX, is that they target those 1% of the cases where you need that flexibility ... and because of choices they make to be able to handle those 1% cases, other 99% of cases suffer because of inefficiency... leading to more expensive workflows. That's why I think Mixer with their simplified system is going into right direction. It is more important to me to be able to do something quickly for my everyday needs, then having node based system that I'll rarely need.

How expensive will Mixer be later? I dont wanna start this program and forced to subscribtion later, after i get myself depedant in the workflow.

Without the QScans this is pretty limited to use :(

Yeah, a shame really. I can't afford to pay for both the Mega Scans subscription and Substance, so I'll wait until Mixer is further in development and has a Painter alternative to make the switch. I really love Mixer's workflow and I hope it becomes the norm.

@@DreyzieArt same. I'm not trying to diss on it, it's wonderful. But it really relies on the mega scans. Yeah you can import your own materials, but who would go through that

alchemist vs mixer?

Hey guys, don't think the hotkey's in the video, but for the "layer link" the guy pulled off, all you have to do is hold the alt key and left click on the layer you want to solely affect the one below (Windows OS). New here so my answer may not be the best, but that looks like the hotkey for now. Peace!

Oh no. Now I have to decide between substance and this. There are too many programs. This looks incredible, but can you create facial features and fabric tears like substance painter?

Substance copied your pilosophy with alchemist, so you just do the same with their features and it's done. You have a massive scan library, they don't :)

@@teddybergsman5358 Just to let you know, Linux support will make you really high up there. Lots of 3D artists don't use Linux because of Windows' dominance, but Pixar has proven that using Linux can create amazing 3D films and that the entire process of rendering is way easier. Glad you are embracing Linux, as you are also embracing the future.
