It might be time to reorganize the fleets. They each have one of each class of BB, so instead of cohesive battle lines, you may end up with ships that struggle to work together, or are stuck at the slowest ship's speed and susceptible to being isolated and defeated in detail. Maybe group the invincibles and preceding class together into an invasion fleet, while the first classes of BB are stationed somewhere near an ally?

Started a French campaign too because the early French ships are awesome and for a challenge I'm not going to use any of the generic dreadnought or battlecruiser hulls. So I'll have a few each of the experimental battleship/dreadnought hulls, then no more capital ships until I unlock modern battleships and can build the Dunkerque etc. Going to see how far a cruiser/destroyer build can take me.

Seeing these makes me understand the lopsided naval battles of the Spanish-American War. Your technology was so far beyond the Chinese, your CLs could block the BB main guns.

Sinking Cuirassés (Battleships) Le Républicain Provence, Marseille MCMV, 13 October 1905 The Cosmao class Croiseur Léger Marseillaise from the Cam Ranh Bay Station navale in Annam joined the Porcupine class Croiseur Cuirassés Foudroyante and the Aspirant Herber, lead of her Destroyer torpilleur class, from the Saigon Station navale in Cochinchina in a patrol in the South China Sea east of French Indochina. There they found two Shusheng class Cuirassés du 2ème rang, the 1892 refitted class lead Shusheng and the 1894 refitted Rinchen, escorted by the Zoucheng class 1891 refitted Croiseur protégé Zaozhuang. The patrol sighted funnel some to the north-east and Aspirant Herber surged ahead to identify the ships, with Marseillaise and Foudroyante closing as best they could at 21 and 18 knots respectively. Foudroyante sighted the Zaozhuang first, though she was the trailing ship. Marseillaise while Aspirant Herber skirted around to close on the Cuirassés. With 259.1mm and 256.5mm shells splashing around her Aspirant Herber made smoke so she could continue to close. Aspirant Herber put two torpedoes into Shusheng, one in her aft belt and one amidships. Shusheng lost #2 and #3 engines, her rudder, and hull integrity in six aft compartments along with nearly 50 casualties. The flooding slowly breached the bulkheads, filling more compartments and disabling #1 engine. Now Shusheng had no power for pumping and had to manually pump the ship. Her crew unable to stop the flooding, Shusheng finally sank with 543 of her 572 man crew. Aspirant Herber pulled back to reload her torpedo tubes. Marseillaise was closing on the Rinchen while hitting Zaozhuang with 115mm fire. Marseillaise closed into range of Rinchen and launched her three port torpedoes on the Cuirassé as Zaozhuang sank with 459 of her 465 man crew. All three torpedoes ran true and detonated on Rinchen’s main belt. Rinchen was flooded forward, lost an engine, and suffered nearly 80 casualties. The flooding breached her amidships bulkhead and water began pouring aft. Rinchen tried to get her revenge, putting four 256.5mm shells into Marseillaise and disabling her #2 engine. Rinchen sank with 715 of her 785 man crew. Marseillaise immediately stopped to begin damage control, and barely saved the ship. She had 140 casualties. Aspirant Herber had suffered 3. Foudroyante was given the task to collect the 105 Chinese Republic Navy survivors.

Battle of Shantou Le Républicain Provence, Marseille MCMV, 26 October 1905 The Cosmao class Croiseur Léger Forfait from the Cam Ranh Bay Station navale in Annam and tThe Aspirant Herber class Destroyer torpilleur Sape from the Haiphong Station navale in Tonkin were cruising up the Chinese coast near Shantou when they spotted funnel smoke of several ships to the north. They quickly sighted the Zoucheng class 1891 refit Croiseur protégé Laiwu, recognizable by her six funnels, closing under smoke. Sape and Forfait closed on her, trying to sight her and any other ships. Laiwu appeared again, then the unrefitted Zoucheng class Croiseur protégé Jingzhou and the Navires de transport they were defending. Finally the Shaanxi class 1890 refit Croiseur Cuirassés Andong appeared behind the smoke of Jingzhou. With more Navires de transport being sighted the plan was to destroy the Zoucheng’s on the way past then deal with the convoy. Sape came up and launched torpedoes at Laiwu. Both hit and both were duds. Forfait launched her starboard torpedoes at Laiwu and hit her forward with two good torpedoes, doing extensive damage. Now Forfait was past the escorts, who seemed determined to run Sape down, as if they could. Forfait headed for the convoy. As she went though she targeted Laiwu with her 155mm guns, and sank the Croiseur protégé with 445 of her 465 man crew. Realizing their mistake, Jingzhou and Andong turned to attack Forfait. This however kept Jingzhou close enough to Forfait that she was able to sink the other Croiseur protégé with 214 of her 237 man crew. Sape turned and closed no Andong from astern, the Chinese Croiseur Cuirassés attempting to catch up with Forfait before she began to sink the convoy. But Forfait was on them, and the Navires de transport Qinhuangdao sank with 17 of her 19 man crew. Hegang sank with all but one of her crew. Zhenxi also sank with 18 of her crew. Sape was now reloaded and on Andong, but the Chinese Siá-hāu [Lieutenant de vaisseau] anticipated Sape’s launch and turned at the last moment. Sape’s torpedoes missed. Meanwhile Forfait took down the Dashancun with 17 of her crew lost. The convoy leader Zhenbian sank with all hands as did Shiyi. The Chinese Merchant Marine had lost 27 thousand tons of shipping capacity, 108 officers and seamen killed, and 6 captured. Sape turned and picked up the 43 survivors from Laiwu and Jingzhou. Forfait had taken 3 casualties, and Sape 2. They decided not to press on and attack Andong.

Taking Down the Thong Le Républicain Provence, Marseille MCMV, 18 October 1905 Two Tricolore class Croiseurs Léger, the Jean Bart from the Cam Ranh Bay Station navale in Annam and the Duquesne from the Saigon Station navale in Cochinchina along with the Troude class Frégate Catinat also from the Saigon were patrolling in the South China Sea while Marseillaise was receiving repairs when they found the unrefitted Shusheng class Cuirassé du 2ème rang Thong, the 1897 refitted Jingyuen, lead of her Croiseur Cuirassés class, and the unrefitted Zoucheng class Croiseur protégé Anqing escorting four Heze class 5.4 thousand ton 26 manned armed Navires de transport. Catinat was in rotation to lead the division in the slow cruise through the South China Sea when they sighted the funnel smoke of several ships to the north-east. Catinat immediately detached from the division so Duquesne and Jean Bart could make full speed and close on the smoke. The convoy and escorts appeared. Catinat turned to close on the Navires de transport while Duquesne and Jean Bart closed on the Cuirassé Thong. Once again the Cuirassé had gone to her top speed and was pulling in front of her slower escorts. Duquesne and Jean Bart put their guns on Anqing but lined up their torpedoes to launch on Thong, which she made easier by finally turning to starboard away from Duquesne and Jean Bart. Duquesne launched her five starboard torpedoes at Thong in a converging strike well aimed on the Cuirassé. One torpedo detonated before the target and four hit aft but only one was live, doing serious damage to the Thong and flooding the ship. The torpedo officer on Jean Bart staggered his launches and led the Thong. It looked like all five would miss ahead of the Cuirassé, however all five hit but only two detonated, indicating the torpedo maintenance officer is an idiot while the torpedo firing officer is a genius. Thong was now wet fore and aft, and the flooding was spreading. Thong sank with only 3 survivors of her 604 man crew. Anqing was now astern of Jean Bart and Jingyuen off her starboard beam. Duquesne turned them to port to set up the next phase of the battle and to bring her loaded port torpedoes to bear. Now Duquesne and Jean Bart could fire on the Anqing. Anqing took the bait and tried to close within a kilometer so she could launch her torpedoes, letting Duquesne to launch as she crossed 1.8 kilometers. Jean Bart also launched but both strikes converged rather than spread, and they missed Anqing. It looked like Jingyuen might accidently turn into Duquesne’s torpedoes but just barely missed them. Anqing and Duquesne now circled around each other, Anqing being careful not to get into Duquesne’s starboard beam. But Anqing was taking hits, was flooded in two compartments, had lost two engines, was burning, and had nearly 50 casualties. The flooding was spreading as Jingyuen foolishly sailed into Duquesne’s starboard beam. Five torpedoes immediately launched at about a kilometer and two hit, with one a dud and the other on Jingyuen’s main belt even as Anqing sank with 214 of her 237 man crew. Jean Bart launched five torpedoes as well, but did not consider that Jingyuen would be losing speed. Only two hit and one was a dud, but now Jingyuen was flooding forward. Water crashed through the ship in minutes and Jingyuen sank with 360 of her 397 man crew. The escorts were gone, and Catinat had kept sight of the convoy. Once she got in range of her rapid firing 40mm guns Catinat began to do damage to Gaocheng which remarably did more damage than Jingyuen and Anqing combined. Gaocheng sank with 10 of her 26 man crew, the survivors having abandoned the ship when Catinat sent out a torpedo strike on them. Xinshancun when Catinat launched more torpedoes at her, striking the Navire de transport just as she sank with 10 of her crew. The master of Langfang had the good sense to surrender after taking 12 casualties. Duquesne had close and was adding her 155mm fire on the convoy leader Heze but the 40mm and 130mm fire from Catinat sunk the Heze with all but one of her 26 man crew. In total the Chinese Merchant Marine lost 22 thousand tons of shipping, 57 officers and seamen killed, and 47 captured. After sweeping back over the battle area only 63 survivors of the Chinese Republic Navy were found. Catinat had taken three casualties from the hit by Gaocheng. Jean Bart took 17 casualties from hits by Thong, and Duquesne took 3 casualties.

Thong is ahead of its escorts and sailing into Duquesne's torpedo range because it has a speed of 16.8 knots and they have a speed of 14.1 knots. Never design your capital ships to be faster than your escorts.

I know this is a very old video but I will admit that especially in a campaign like this I wish there was a reclassification system like when you build a newer bigger battleship then the smaller older ones can maybe reclassified as a heavy cruiser or something like that

The Loss of the Glorious Hussard Le Républicain Provence, Marseille MCMV, 21 October 1905 The Portuguese surrendered Porcupine class Croiseur Cuirassés Henri IV from the Kompong Som Station navale in Cambodia joined two Aspirant Herber class Destroyers torpilleur, the Mistral from the Haiphong Station navale in Tonkin and the Hussard from the Cam Ranh Bay Station navale in Annam, for a patrol close to the coast of China near Hong Kong, still the favorite port of entry for foreign trade despite the declared state of war between China and the Empire of Japan, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, and now the Troisième République Française. They found a convoy of seven Nenjiang class 4.8 thousand ton 19 manned Navires de transport escorted by two Shaanix class Croiseurs Cuirassés, the Hexi and the Ningxia. Mistral was leading Hussard and closed on the sighted convoy while Henri IV closed behind them. Mistral launched on Hexi but missed astern of her, then had to dodge Hexi launching back, only she didn’t, taking a torpedo amidships. Hussard came up to launch on Hexi, now less than half a kilometer away, and Hexi launched first. Hexi’s torpedo hit, again amidships, taking out #2 and #3 engines on Hussard. Hussard’ torpedoes struck Hexi, taking out all three of her engines. Hussard was flooding across 70% of the ship. Hexi however was the first to sink, going down with 257 of her 273 man crew. Hussard sank moments later, taking 88 of her 95 man crew with her. Henri IV was now up and targeting Ningxia. She turned to open her broadside while Ningxia tried to close. Henri IV got a solid hit with her 230mm shell but her starboard torpedoes were both duds. Another 230mm shell went through Ningxia main belt. Ningxia was firing back with her 261.6mm guns but always falling short. Realizing that if she kept a kilometer off Henri IV’s beam her armor would withstand the 230mm shells, Ningxia pulled back. Now however she need to get more hits than Henri IV. That wasn’t going to happen because despite the range Henri IV’s next two shells went amidships and through as the waterline, opening up Ningxia. Within a minute Ningxia sank with 253 of her 273 man crew. The convoy had been given no time to clear the area, and Henri IV was on them in minutes. Mingchen sank with 17 of her 19 man crew. Ningbo sank with 8 of her crew and Heze with 17. The convoy had pulled itself together and Henri IV was in a stern chase with only a 4 knot advantage. But as she came up Navires de transport began to break formation and try to scatter. Gaocheng seemed to be circling to ram Henri IV when she sank with all but one of her crew, who when interviewed couldn’t explain his ship’s conduct. Wugongli sank with all hands. Liaobei sank with one survivor. The convoy leader Nenjiang had kept a steady course and Henri IV again had to claw her way into effective range. Finally she got the hit that took out the convoy leader’s engines and Nenjiang sank with all 19 of her crew. The Chinese Merchant Marine had lost another 34 thousand tons of shipping capacity, 116 officers and seamen killed, and 17 taken prisoner. The Chinese Republic Navy also had personnel taken prisoner, 36 men being pulled from the South China Sea. 7 men from Hussard were rescued as well, and Mistral had taken 5 casualties. Henri IV was untouched.

Noting that both early French and Chinese hulls are rather unique and having given it some thought I've decided the French hulls are the uglier. The Chinese hulls make me think of either old Roman galleys or some kind of sci fi vessel with the odd turret placements.

Would you consider placing 4 wing turrets on the invincible hull of the same caliber as the main centerlines? Maybe a 300 mm or 320s?

is there anyway to speed up campaign loading times? im running the new Beta with the Improvement mod and it takes like 1 hour and it didnt even "sim" 6 months.

Hey there BrotherMunro. Great work and love the series, just a little tip. I know that French is not a language you speak but if you wanted to improve your pronounciation a little bit for this campaign, in French for the most part, the final letter of a word is silent except for if the word ends with the letter B,C,F,K,L,Q or R. You don’t have to follow this if you don’t want to of course but if you ever felt a bit self conscious about pronounciation here you go.

Can the superfiring guns shoot over the turret in front? The arc of fire circle has a gap there. Thanks for getting me into dreadnoughts btw I’m really enjoying it 🙂

really been enjoying this series, great job. Do have a question though? How is the AI in fights? You seem to have such an easy time beating it fight after fight its almost kind of depressing ☹...i'd like a tougher AI opponent! Is it just crappy ships/crew on the AI side? Again, great series!

why do you just force the rudder all the way to one way when you get torps sent at you? doesn't that just force turn the ship more?

I'm just curious, why do you only really use the Standard weight shells? Why not the heavy, or later, super heavy shells?

I notice that you don't reduce speed when you engage. I've been playing on the assumption that the gunnery mechanics require you to reduce speed to increase accuracy but watching your battles it really doesn't seem to work that way. Have I been doing it wrong all this time? 😮
