Let's take a head-to-head look at the IQAir HealthPro Plus and the Austin Air Healthmate and compare them side by side for many different variables and applications. I have an IQAir Healthpro Plus in my home and I ran one at my desk for 10 years and I sold thousands of them over 15 years and received a lot of feedback from many customers. And I have 2 Austin Air Healtmates running in my home for over 15 years now, and I've sold over a thousand of them over 15 years, as well. These are 2 of the best brands and units that I've worked with through the years out of 50 or so brands so let's do a comparison.
Where are they manufactured? The IQAir HealthPro Plus is manufactured in Switzerland and the Austin Air Healthmate is manufactured in Buffalo, NY. So it is manufactured in the United States. The Austin Air Healthmate has a steel exterior frame and IQAir HealthPro Plus has a plastic exterior frame.
How long have they been on the market? Both units have been in the US market for over 20 years and there has been very little change to these units over the past 20 or so years, as well. The Healthpro plus did have an upgrade to its fan several years ago - and they called the newer units the New Edition and all the HealthPro Plus units sold are now New Edition units and have been for several years. The upgrade made the unit more energy efficient and 32% quieter.
What are the maintenance intervals on the two units? The IQAir HealthPro Plus has three filters that get changed after different intervals: The Prefilter gets changed every 18 months, The V5 Gas and Odor Carbon filter gets replaced about every 2 years and the HyperHEPA filter gets replaced about every 4 years. IQAir Health Pro Plus vs. Austin Air Health Mate Compare
Let's Look at the Cost of Ownership for Filter Replacements for the two solutions with current pricing. The IQAir Premax Prefilter: is $79, the V5 Gas and Odor Filter with Carbon: is $99.00, and the HyperHEPA Filter is $199.00. If you change these filters at the recommended intervals over 10 years you would pay a total of $1,367. The Austin Air Healthmate has a combination 2 in-1 filter that combines the HEPA filter with the carbon + you get a wrap-around prefilter and all that costs about $290 these days. Health Pro Plus Health Mate Compare So you would pay $787 more for the IQAir filter replacements over 10 years which is 235% more than the Austin Air Healthmate filter replacements - you would be paying more than double for the IQAir HealthPro Plus filter replacements over 10 years. So the cost of replacement filters over 10 years is in favor of the Austin Air Healthmate.
Let's look at the Cost of Ownership on Energy Consumption between the 2 units. The IQAir HealthPro Plus on High Speed which is speed 6 provides 300 CFMs and uses 215 watts. The Austin Air Healthmate on High speed = 250 CFMs at 132 watts. So, on High speed, you get 20% more CFMs w/ the IQAir HealthPro Plus but you pay 32% more for the electricity for it. The current average electricity rate in the US is 16.09 cents per kWh. And if you extrapolate that over 1 year it would be $94.66 more for the HealthPro Plus to run per year, on high speed, on average... Or over 10 years it would be about $945 more in energy costs to run the HealthPro Plus... but again, you would get 20% more CFMs. So, the Austin Air Healthmate is going to be less expensive to run when it comes to energy consumption for similar CFMs vs. the IQAir HPP.
The Additional Total Cost of Ownership for the IQAir HealthPro Plus would be the Total Additional cost of Filter replacements plus the additional Energy consumption costs: So if we add up the additional replacement filter costs of $787 and the additional energy costs of $945 for the IQAir HealthPro Plus to run on high speed...

Hi there. This video is really helpful, thanks. For those who may be sitting on the fence, I'd like to share my experience. I was first introduced to Austin Air as my partners Mom worked for an Asthma specialist Doctor in Canada. He sold the Austin Air devices through his practice. When he retired, he actually gave away an Austin Air HealthMate HM400 to us. These things are not cheap :-) It turned out to be Serial 005430 Manufactured 1995. This thing is a beast and now on it's 3rd filter. I'm so confident with Austin Air I've also purchased 2 HealthMate Junior HM200's for the house. Our recent Forest fire adventures prompted me to purchase the excellent IQAir Indoor Air monitor to validate out mitigation efforts. The Austin Air devices rock. I've got the evidence to prove that now. I'm sure the IQAir Filter devices rock more but I've yet to spend the $ on one.

@@AirPurificationEducation You are very welcome. I was blown away when I recently was reminded of the manufactured date of the HM400. I'm honestly very disappointed how planned obsolesce now dominates many of the products we buy today. Home appliances like yours are designed to last 5 years or less. This should be criminal. I've been encouraging friends and family to put at least a minimal amount of effort into repairing their older appliances. My Dad for example has a classic 20 year old Maytag washer which is well worth investing $ into whatever parts it requires. Our planet is toast if we don't take an active role in keeping stuff out of the landfill :-)

Thanks for sharing this video. For me it was a toss up between the HPP or the HealthMate, but after watching this video I'm most likely going to purchase the HPP. I live in a 1200 square foot single story house with my 3 children, one of them being my 10 year old son who is medically fragile and has chronic respiratory disease. I can't believe that I've waited this long to purchase one, but better late than never! I'm looking forward to how it'll benefit my family and I, especially my 10 year old son.

Thank you so much! Yeah, the whole carbon/odor issue is VERY difficult to gauge and even test for, I think. When I talked to the IQAir CEO years ago - I was trying to understand how to differentiate between the effectiveness of their carbon vs. competitors and he said something like it was super hard to test for the effectiveness of carbon but there was a high-level testing company/facility in Germany, I think, that could do it for like $30K to $50,000 or something... lol! and I was like - wow... OK... but the IQAir unit did an AMAZING job for me with severe carpet and paint off-gassing - really top notch... I was so impressed! But my Healthmates never make me feel strongly about their effectiveness for almost any kitchen odors, burnt oven - incense, etc. it's like we don't even have an air purifier w/ carbon in the room and my wife burned incense and that stuff lingered for 3 days or so and so... and we have a NEW filter in the Healthmate... I personally, really have low confidence w/ the Healthmate and the carbon... but IDK... some folks love it for odors, etc. It is very GRAY for me - anyhow - thanks!

I had the HPP in a brand new home with brand new carpet and paint and I mean it was a VOC Tsunami - VERY BAD VOCs - and the HPP banged it out EVERY day - I was so impressed... maybe HPP is better for certain VOCs and Heathmate is better for certain odors - IDK... maybe someday I'll get a better understanding - I do plan on eventually pursuing more general knowledge on the carbon issue for sure... just busy w/ a lot of stuff right now... On the iqair health pro plus the filter intervals discussed are listed on their website for 10hrs daily use. From prior videos you utilize yours filters on high 24hrs a day. Do you still change filters on thr recommended schedule based on 10hrs daily use or do you change yours early? Essentially half of the recommended intervals due to running the units double the time?

@AirPurificationEducation
@AirPurificationEducation Жыл бұрын
Yes, the HealthPro Plus has a decent amount of carbon to help with formaldehyde but it really excels at particle filtration - as I think it is currently top 2 for that. So it can do both... but if you have a ton of formaldehyde in the space and that is your most pressing issue then you may want to look at the GC unit - which has more carbon and is designed for more VOC-intense environments. That said, I prefer folks go with the HealthPro Plus, if possible - as it filters particles better. Thank you! 😃

Thank you for this comparison! What are your thoughts on the Austin Air Healthmate *Plus*? The Healthmate Plus filter is impregnated with potassium iodide, which they say helps with chemical and VOC coverage. I wonder how the IQAir HealthPro Plus and the Austin Air Healthmate *Plus* compare when it comes to VOCs, chemicals, etc?
@AirPurificationEducation
@AirPurificationEducation Жыл бұрын
Hello - unfortunately, it is really difficult to know which is better on the VOC issue. I was against the AustinAir Healthmate Plus unit for a long time (and through the years - I've told multiple people not to buy it) because I had multiple customers tell me they could smell something coming from the filter after about 6 to 12 months. I had received this type of feedback over a couple of years. Eventually, I talked with a pretty technical guy and he told me he thought the units were possibly accumulating mold in the carbon. I don't know for sure but he was a really sharp guy and he explained in detail why that could occur... that is what he thought. Now, I have not heard anyone complain about an odor coming from the Plus unit for about 5 years, now... so maybe that 'issue' has been resolved. Or maybe there have been fewer Plus units purchased in the past 5 years due to increased competition. Either way, that is a deal killer for me in regards to buying the Plus unit and I personally would never get it... If I think something may even possibly introduce mold into my environment - I run the other way as I've talked to many people who have become sick from mold. So, that is how I currently feel about this. I do like the regular Healthmate unit and I love the IQAir HealthPro Plus. Thank you! 😄

Hi there! I am split on this decision, and your video only highlighted how evenly split I am. lol. 1) My closet is about 15 feet from my closet, so I want the most powerful machine to attack cooking smells. Sounds like IQAir. 2) Cost. Sounds like Austin. 3) I think the Austin machine is ugly, so design for me goes to IQAir. 4) Customer care definitely seems more personable from Austin. HELP!!! lol But, seriously... I need your help deciding. Thank you!

Thank you for your question. 1) You mentioned, "My closet is about 15 feet from my closet" - can you please define "closet". I currently think of a closet as a place to store clothing. I am trying to envision your environment. 2) Can you please tell me the square footage of the room the food is in? + the height of your ceilings? I need to know the cubic footage. 3) Carbon takes out odors so, if this is the #1 goal of an air purifier in your environment - then we would want to take a look at units with a lot of carbon, in general. 4) Do you care much about how well the unit takes out particles like dust and allergens? Thanks!

Thank you for the clarification on your environment. I would try the Airpura R600: amzn.to/3UN8mOu It has 18 lbs. of carbon + a HEPA filter. When you are trying to control the cooking odors - it may be best to run the unit on medium speed so the carbon has a better chance to absorb the odors... The IQAir HPP is amazing for ultrafine particulates but this Airpura is much better for the cooking odors. I think the R600 has better (and more) carbon for odor control than the Austin Air Healthmate + I think the R600 may be better at particle filtration than the Healthmate, as well. Good Luck!👍@@Jumbaride

At .5 microns the 2 solutions may appear to be "similar" based on the readings of an air quality tester. However, the IQAir HPP filters 99.95% at .003 microns so there is a MASSIVE difference in their particle filtering capabilities - esp. the smaller particles. As the smaller ultrafine particles (.1 to .003 microns in size) are the most plentiful in our air comprising 90% of all the particles in the air we breathe... and they are by far the most dangerous to humans, as well. One day my 1100 Pro told me my brand new $400 Aeris Lite unit was filtering better than my 7 year old $160 Winix 5500 with old, dusty filters in it... and the next day, my 1100 Pro told me the old Winix was filtering better than my new, elite air purifier. Again, it was only able to read the larger .5 microns. Either way, I currently do not really trust the accuracy of the Air quality testers. Thank you!👍

@AirPurificationEducation Since we have no ability to test under .5 micron, we are guessing which filter works best. It could be, the merv 8 just takes more passes to do the same job.
@AirPurificationEducation
@AirPurificationEducation 4 ай бұрын
Anything is possible however, in 16 years, I've never had anyone tell me their MERV 8 filter helped them with their allergies or any particular breathing issues they were having. I've had many people get a HPP and say it dramatically improved their breathing - some customers would even say it was a "Life Changing" purchase. I probably sold HPP units to over 100 hospitals over the years and they would only order the HPP - no other brand. The HPP is Elite for particle filtration. A MERV 8 in not manufactured/engineered to come anywhere near the filtration level of a HPP. So, I highly doubt a MERV 8 filter is ever going to come close to the filtering performance of a HPP. MERV 8: 1.0-3.0 microns greater than or equal to 20% 3.0-10.0 microns greater than or equal to 70% IQAir HPP: 99.97% at .3 microns. 99.95% at .003 microns It was the 1st residential air purifier to be EN1822 certified. "we are guessing which filter works best" Actually, I wouldn't consider us "guessing" which filters the best, at all. These are 2 totally different levels of filtration. And they've been 3rd party tested for performance. But thank you for your take on this! It helps me understand what some people are thinking👍 @@joeshmoe7899

@@AirPurificationEducation the merv 8 moves a LOT more air than the iqair. In the typical leaky home, high cfm is useful, in mitigating the high inflow of outside air. In a hospital clean room, iqair is the obvious choice. Regarding chemical sensitivity, I've heard people replacing the iqair gc multigas with positive pressure heat exchanger (hrv/erv) for the higher cfm. Having both severe allergies and chemical sensitivity, I replaced my iqair healthpro, then gc multigas...now happy with merv8, dehumidifier, and positive pressure ventilation in my LEED apartment building.

Ahhh, MCS. Very, very Interesting. OK, so let me think - more CFMs moving throughout the space can/will help remove the chemicals/VOCs which may trigger someone with MCS. I do know of folks having issues with formaldehyde "fanning the fumes outside" to make the interior much more livable. Assuming the outside air coming into the space is fairly clean. And the size of the particles that trigger your allergies may possibly be fairly large particles which a MERV 8 may possibly be able to accommodate - and/or the "air exchanges" themselves, with the outside air - may be helping to dilute the particles that trigger your asthma. You are basically getting air exchanges with the outside air - so it must be of a better quality than what you have indoors, I'm guessing... which makes me bring up the questions... 1) Can you please say where you live (in the country - not in a busy city, right?) ? 2) And is the air outside your home pretty clean, in general? I would have to assume it is? 3) When did you make the transition to this solution - how long ago- weeks/months? Thanks - your feedback was super interesting.👍 Just when I keep telling myself I need to stop interacting so much with the comments section as it prevents me from making more content/videos... but then, I learn so much from the interactions... What to do? It is a dilemma. @@joeshmoe7899

I think it is possible they probably do a decent job of C/S on their units if called or if someone uses the chat function. I unsuccessfully tried to contact them via the "fill out a request form" page and asked a sales question. And customer service and sales levels of service will definitely fluctuate for most all companies over time. Sometimes it is good and sometimes it is not so good - esp. if it is the busy season. I was just very surprised no one answered my sales inquiries.... I mean, were they understaffed? or what? IDK. But they got rid of all their North American dealers about 3 years ago so ALL those customer inquiries will now go directly to HQ. So they needed to staff up to meet the demand. I don't know what they did to handle the increase in inquiries. I was able to call them successfully but that online form was a dead end. Kinda crazy, I think. Maybe they've fixed it in the months since I made this video. IDK... Thanks! 👍
