IR(R) Revalidation Test

A video of my fixed wing restricted instrument rating - IR(R) - or the old 'IMC' rating - flight test. Flight on instruments for all but the first 5 minutes. Includes VOR tracking, partial panel, timed turns and two instrument approaches into EGGP Runway 09 - the first an ILS, the second a SRA (surveillance radar approach). Conditions were strong gusty crosswinds, which made for a challenging test! Worth watching right to the end - still can't believe we did this.

Glad to hear it helped. Rather ironic that I’ve since let mine lapse; my new aircraft is VFR-only.

Nice one. I did my initial IR(R) a week ago at Hawarden That blind landing looked tough!!

Fantastic flying Stu and a great credit to your FIE who I thought was very inspirational and confidence inspiring. Really tricky conditions with the wind I wouldn't have wanted to land VFR let alone less than minimums with that cross wind. Well done!

That's a cracking instructor/examiner. I hope I have one just as good when I take my IR(R)!

Im confused and slightly horrified why the SRA continued well past MDA and even doing a landing based on someone else's talking/judement, which is also impaired with a chart in the window. It's impressive but without auto land 3 in LVPs with safeguarding, dangerous I would say!

I was certainly surprised, but with an instructor next to me with unimpeded vision, and able to take control at any time, I would not say it was dangerous.

@@StuWithAView MDH for SRA should be 600 ft on IR-R as it is non precission approach, also ILS - 500. Definitely something not right here (and scary, I wouldn't feel safe flying under simulated instrument knowing that my safety pilot view is obscured by chart).

Was that actually your test or was it a pre test lesson?

It was the actual revalidation test.

I'm surprised tablets are allowed during validation. What S/W were you running?

SkyDemon; VFR only. Logs flight times, gives frequencies etc.

SD was logging flight time and showing PLOG only; I prefer a paperless cockpit. As you’ll see from the video, my instructor was pretty thorough. This is from a good few years ago now; I’ve since let my IR(R) lapse as my current machines are day VFR only.

@@StuWithAView That's understandable. If you're not going to make use of it, the qualification is superfluous. For me personally, I'd like to go and stay over at various locations without the concern of getting pinned in by cloud. A paperless cockpit sounds ideal until the batteries run out or the device overheats. :)

The IR(R) was only ever a get out of jail card for me; to fly IFR properly I would need the full IR plus a capable, de-iced and probably twin engined aircraft. That’s not really my thing. The paperless need comes from my open cockpit gyro. Back up is on a second device, usually my phone.
