Iraqi Mirage F.1 Shoots Down a Target of Opportunity? (Iran-Iraq War)

In mid 1970s, France and Iraq negotiated the purchase of Dassault's latest fighter - Mirage F.1. The first examples were only delivered in early 1981, months after the conflict with Iran began. But the French fighter offered the Iraqi Air Force capabilities above all the other types they operated. However, they were still being challenged by advanced Iranian fighter types such as F-4E and F-14. The Mirage achieved some air-to-air success, whether in planned operations such as the well-known 'Giraffe', or by attacking targets of opportunities.
On 14 August 1986, two Iranian F-5Es were attacking a well defended Iraqi oil refinery at Suleimaniyah. This sortie would be the last one for both pilots.

"I was hit by a SAM"......in all wars, many pilots refuse to accept be shot down by a enemy plane, AAA or SAMs are more acceptable.....i think a AD hit is "Business as usual".....a hit by a enemy plane is "A personal thing"...

It might be because as a fighter pilot, you are armed with missiles and guns and you can fight back against enemy fighters. With SAMs and AAA, your options for fighting back are very limited (unless you are flying a SEAD airplane). Although I included the doubt, I am likely to believe that the Iraqi pilot was the one who scored a kill here.

Damn it he has done it again excellent outstanding work with a love for detail👍. Great historical quality content, not so well known that is what makes it interesting. Tastes are different but I am not really a friend of using a filter throughout the whole video its good at specific Sequences. I like the music in the background.

Thank you for yet another inspired comment! I was doing a double experiment with this one. The VHS effect was originally only going to be used for the intro sequence and maybe ground shots. But I wouldn't change the decision. I did however upload a version with ho filter for the Patreon supporters 😁 The music also felt good enough to be included in the main combat scenes as well.

The Mirage F.1 is such a beauty, one correction must though be made regarding an earlier video about Iraqi Mirage F.1 EQs, the E stood for Export, not Electronique, the Q did indeed mean Iraq. The designation C (Chasse), that is Pursue in French, was chosen for the original F.1 version as it was meant to be purely an interceptor, while the E version was developed initially in order to compete with the F-16 for customers among European air forces, being a multi-role aircraft within the limits of the design.

It is incomprehensible that DCS doesn't have maps to make it easier to recreate the two biggest and most significant air campaigns outside of WW2 - Vietnam and the Iran/Iraq War. Hopefully they're something we'll get someday. Great video as always - I love these examinations of these lesser-known Cold War engagements.

Thanks for the feedback! Well, under current circumstances it takes a long time to produce a DCS map. I also think that Vietnam might be a bit too hard on current PC configurations until they optimize their software. But ED did suggest that there will be Vietnam someday.

The Iraqi MIRAGE was also equiped with AS-30L missile which is a air-ground missile, it works with a special pod of designation, so they did a lot of strike missions with it on Iranian targets. They have sunk the biggest tanker of the world too. On 1991, during desert storm operation, the french army was'nt allowed to fly with their MIRAGE F1 during a certain period, it was for not making confusion with Iraqi MIRAGE F1, the USA ARMY wanted to avoid a fraticidal fire.

Thanks for contributing info! Iraqi Mirages did some interesting things with guided air-to-ground weapons. Sadly, this variant that we have in DCS can't carry any of them but maybe in the future.....

@@showtime112 An other thing, the french engineers created a special tank for Irak adapted on MIRAGE F1. We call it, the "iraqui can", it's a big special tank of 2200 liters filled with kerosene that you can put only under the fuselage. After this creation, the french armée de l'air, adapted the same on their aircraft. You can see it on videos on youtube about the Tchad.

Thanks! Due to the nature of both regimes and what happened to one of them, the whole picture will probably remain clouded. Most Iraqi Air Force records were destroyed in 2003 while many of their former pilots were persecuted by pro-Iranian militias. In Iran, most pilots who fought in the war were considered disloyal to the regime to their successes were actually downplayed by their own country. Quite a unique situation.

Hvala! U tom sukobu avijacija dosad izgleda baš i nije igrala presudnu ulogu. Nekakva eskadrila ili dvije vjerojatno same za sebe ne bi donijele prevagu. Avijacija (tj. konkretno, zapadni način upotrebe) je efikasan kao cijeli sistem, sa svom mogućom podrškom AWACS-a, ometača i što je možda najbitnije, SEAD pratnje. Rusi su oduvijek imali vrlo jaku PVO, bez ozbiljne supresije efekat je ograničen.

Hey showtime! The glitch effect gave a nice change! However, it can be kind of eye-stressing. If you were trying to replicate the "old camera effect", try the VHS effect. Great video though, Mirage F1 is a highly unspoken-about 3rd gen

Thanks for the feedback! I watched the video about four times and I didn't find it stressing. It was supposed to help with immergence by looking like a rare VHS footage from the period and I think it succeeded. Some get it, some don't.

@@yeetboi911 Well, this actually is VHS effect. A rather complex one with RGB channel separation, pixelation, color curves manipulation, an overlay simulating tape damage and a few more. I'm not sure which one you are talking about.

Dear mate. Wonderful old fashion vidéo. F1EQ Can carry also ECM pod jammer Sycomor chaff flares ejector. BGL bombs SAMP400 and South Africa homemade "bespoke"CBU 470. Later Exocet antiship missile on EQ5and6. Do you know this évent. In 14 september 1983. Two Turkish F100F super sabre from Diyarbakir AB crossed Turkey North Irak border. Two F1EQ intercepted both planes. One F1 shoot Matra530F and shoot down one super sabre. Fortunately Turkish crew ejected safely. I wait desesperately your Next vidéo.🙋👍

A lot of it is fixed cost such as DCS modules (Mirage F1 was 64 USD, Syria map was 35 USD etc) but you can make several videos with it. The cost of running a legal business (which is required when you make an income such as this) for me is 200 € per month. Since I can produce 4-5 videos per month, that's 40-50 € per video. But mostly, it's about time. It usually takes a whole week for one video. And if it only gets 10000 views, that earns me about 20 dollars. If I had spent that time working some 'regular' job, I would have earned a lot more. Even driving for Uber would have made me ten times as much. And I will have to update my PC soon because it kinda struggles with DCS.

Hey Showtime, love the videos but really dislike the faux VHS video texturing that you're adding. If you really need to do it, maybe just limit it to selected ground perspective shots? It takes away from DCS's beautiful graphics and actually looks ridiculous when used on interior cockpit shots.

"Yousef Samandarian" - when I heard this Persian name, I thought it had an Armenian twang to it, for the endings of Armenian surnames follow that phonetic pattern: "Kevorkian", "Chilingarian", "Ohanesian", or "Kardashian", for example. Perhaps it was the Persian language and culture, which influenced this pattern in Armenian surnames?

That was another reason for the poor performance of the Iraqi Air Force's Mirage F1s during the Gulf War. The French during the 1990s had cut off the delivery of spare parts for most Iraqi weapons and equipment, with the Mirage F1 fleet suffering the most, as the stocks of Matra Super 530F and Matra Magic II missiles were mostly paid for. with loans that had to be delivered. The Iraqis had to rely on their MiG-21/23 fighters after the war against Iran, since they did not have any form of payment and the Soviets were also very reluctant to sell the MiG-29 with R-73 missiles, even just they were given the R-27s (albeit with downgraded versions in passing). The IRAF performed horribly in the air war and much is due to the condition of its fleet and the poor planning and extreme cowardice of its generals who were less than enthusiastic about launching their planes into combat. Many pilots from Iraq were war veterans, they had experience and proved their worth and ability (especially the MiG-25 Foxbat), to say that the IRAF was on a leash is an understatement. For Iraq, Iran is near peer and can put up some fights against the better aircraft flown by the Iranian. But against Coalition forces in Desert Storm, it’s nowhere near the level of fight against Iran.

For one thing, the Coalition had access to Mirage F.1 and they knew it very well (and how to deal with it). Plus, they had superior training, tactics, AWACS support, EW support etc. Essentially, it was a generation behind the fighters it was fighting against.

@@axel665 The F-14 shootdowns by F.1 were the result of an innovative tactics and the fact that Iran had no AWACS. Generally, Mirage F.1 was in all aspects inferior to American 'Teen Fighters.'
