Happened to me. Cashier was just inputting the value of coupons instead of how much the item actually cost, and I ended up with like 8 dollars in cash that they owed me.

I've heard of that, though. It's been a while, but I once heard of a lady who hoarded coupons so much that she actually made $20 every time she went shopping. It's always the ladies, too. No guy every pulls that off. The guys are always like, "Oh, I will pay whatever the total comes to. Please don't make me mess with those coupons." As Bill Engvall once said, immitating his wife, "See honey? I saved us $1.67." "Well book the cruise. I can find _that_ in the couch."

My stepmom does this. I've been trying to learn. After a big haul like that, I'd donate the majority of it (and some leftover money as well) to a local food pantry and send the extra women's products to a shelter for homeless teens. There is no real reason to just stockpile stuff like this other than that. It just makes you look like a maniac.

I don't watch that show much, but I have seen a few episodes where they were making a special trip just to get stuff to donate. You're right though, no reason to have a personal "stockpile" of food for your family that is worth thousands of dollars when probably half of it would expire before you could ever eat it.

My sister is a couponer genius. She is not one of those that buys just to stock pile items just because they are on sale. She buys for herself, me, my mom & brother. If you match up coupons with store sales you can get a lot of items for free. She has then taken those free items like personal care items..toothpaste, toothbrushes, razors, feminine hygiene products & donated them to the homeless shelters & churches in need.

I agree on the too much mental work. I could never do it. My extent of helping her is clipping the coupons & pushing the shopping cart lol. She is the mad genius that has all the calculations figured out. The one that was brilliant was shopping at Target Ina sale for dog food. Between the 4 of us we have 4 dogs so stocking up on that is a good thing. Target ran food on sale that when when you purchased it you received a $5 gift card....plus my sis used coupons. Target runs sales like that on items like baby wipes too where you receive a $5 gift card. She ended up at the end of the year with over $200 in gift cards that she used to by Christmas presents. Plus she got her extreme discounted couponer rates on her items. It's mind boggling but I cannot complain.....my dogs are feed & I have shampoo 😆

What's even the point though? Like that one family bought 60 bbq sauce bottles. 60. When on earth are you ever going to use that much BBQ sauce? Like looking at her list, there was a lot of stuff on there, but a lot of it seemed like junk and not stuff you can live off of. They see savings, I see waste. I worked in a grocery store when I was in college. These women had to try different stores because we would recognize them when they got in line. One women was able to double up on coupons. My registered eventually stopped accepting her coupons. She got upset and asked her husband to buy a case of beer so I could ring up more coupons. She had more coupons than items and she could have given me coupons for items she didn't even buy. These people are crazy, they buy things just because they have a coupon. What a waste, just buy what you need. I'm happy if I have one coupon for a box of cereal

I think people get such a rush from the savings from couponing. However, I know a few people who do couponing to this extreame but they actually donate a lot of their stock pile to the local homeless shelters. Especially if you can get the women hygiene products in bulk for practically nothing and donate it, that's what they need. I don't understand the loopholes but I appreciate everyone who does.

The grocery stores around me have cracked down on the extreme couponers by limiting the total number of coupons you can use per order or limiting the number of like coupons per transaction (for example you can only use three of the same coupon). It is impossible to coupon like the people on the show here. Most of the time the couponers get to the store as soon as it opens when there is a new sale and take everything.

For anyone who's wondering, yes extreme couponing isn't realistic...sort if. I'm only basing this on an article I read a few years back when I was curious about the show myself. It was written by a woman who was approached to be on the show back when it was in its concept stage; she had her own blog or something detailing how to save big* with coupons (*like a normal shopper). However, when the show rolled out they dropped her in favor of more "extreme" couponers--and so we have the show everyone's familiar with. From what I understand half of what's depicted on the show is straight up unrealistic (no cashier will be that happy to check you out if you're buying a whole shelf of products with 100+ coupons, most stores won't double your coupons, and many stores put a limit on coupon usage in one transaction), about a quarter of it is illegal (they don't show that part but many people acquire the coupons illegally and abuse them in other ways), and the rest glorifies an unhealthy lifestyle. No one needs 50 bottles of BBQ sauce unless you're donating or having a massive cookout...possibly many. There's also the fact that many stores have admitted to allowing certain coupons to work in certain ways when the show comes in, but when they're gone they go back to regular policy (they do have this right, though). And yes, it's usually pretty shitty food that goes on sale, and usually it's the same things over and over again, so they end up with countless hordes of the same thing. Moreover there's a huge time-suck they're giving over to do this, and they often visit multiple stores to get the "best" deals so they're wasting gas too. Not to mention the cost of getting the coupons themselves, which ironically can end up being pricey. So yeah, a coupon here or there is fine, but just look for the best deals and you'll be saving much more than these people.

Coupons are meant as a lure to get you to shop at their store. Stores don't care if you save five bucks when you're spending hundreds. These people however exploit every loophole, letting them get more than the store intends. It's still all good though, because the stores still make more on all the customers their sales bring in than they can lose on someone like this.

coolenaam once u develop a rhythm u can then for example buy lotion one year and have enough like 3 large bottles to last for a 2 years. making learning how a store sells and markets its products ur part time job allows many families here to elevate their standard of living. for stay at home moms this turns their salary worth from 115k to that plus the 1000s they save in coupons. I think it's worth it.
@lestranged
@lestranged 7 жыл бұрын
The companies that make the products reimburse the store for the coupon value I think. So the store doesn't lose that money, the food and toiletry companies lose it. But they consider it part of their advertising/promotional budget, so it's a business expense on their taxes, and they don't really lose it either. The cost of advertising (including coupons) is basically rolled into the regular price of the products. So the ones truly paying for this 'free' stuff would have to be the people paying full price for these items.

I got a couple bags of salad for free last week. They were on sale for $0.99 a bag and I had coupons for $1.00 off a bag. My family had salad for dinner that night and lunch the next day. There are a lot of coupons for healthy stuff- most you have to either print them yourself or find them hanging on shelves in the grocery store.

I worked as a cashier for Walmart for time, and I remember getting a few of these couponers. It's absolutely AMAZING how they have it down to a science! They end up owing practically NOTHING (a dollar & some-odd cents was normal). Some even had the store owing them money! It's perfectly "legal" and we cashiers were happy to help! Until the companies stop putting out the coupons, this will continue. . . and why not? I've also had friends who make their coupon "runs" to the store who have shared with me things: shampoo, deodorant, tooth paste, etc. I love it!

My aunt is a pretty serious couponer, not to this degree, but she definitely has mastered the process. I think it’s a totally fine and beneficial hobby if you’re not obsessive about it, and if you use what you get for more than just your own personal collection. If I did this, I would be giving a lot of things away to family members, homeless shelter and food pantries, donating whatever I could to people who really need it. This could be a really cool thing if there were more people doing it for the right reasons.

I feel like it is because of this show (or maybe the economy) that coupons don't work like this anymore. Most stores don't double, and it's usually you can only use one of each type of coupon per transaction. So you would have to have like 200 transactions, which just isn't possible.

This is why my mother's pantries, fridges, and freezers (yes, all plural) are bonkers, and that's despite Canada's rules against combining all these sorts of bullshit coupons. They always list a huge amount of money they "saved", but they saved it on stuff they don't need and will never use, and they spent like 30 hours a week collecting the coupons and planning he shopping trip. (not to mention the 10 hours in the store itself). So They worked 40 hours to get 100s of "free" toothpaste and barbecue sauce. They still don't have any real food to make a meal. They have no meat to put the sauce ON. None of that stockpile is "free" when they have to work so many hours to get it. They basically have a full time job that gets paid in mouthwash and mustard. In that same amount of time you could work at a real job and get paid in MONEY, and buy whatever food you will actually EAT. AND you'll have a spare room to use for living in, instead of these stupid stockpiles hoarding toiletries and condiments.

Instead of hoarding and money saving, perhaps Hailey's parents should probably teach her some manners. Jesus Christ, the way she talked to her father was just wrong. I'm still puzzled at the concept that, if done properly, coupons can virtually get you hundreds of dollars worth of groceries for a couple of dollars. or some of these ladies get money BACK from the store thanks to coupons. Fascinating. That would be illegal in Italy. They didn't show the really amazing ladies that do these massive grocery runs with 4or5 trolleys and then donate the whole thing to charity. 👏
