Let me address what you are going to say, that everyone has repeatedly told me... that RAID-0 is not redundant, that if ONE drive fails you lose your data. Guess what... when your SINGLE drive fails, you lose your data. NO SHIT? That's why you make extra backups, on other drives, on the cloud, on a DVD... whatever. This isn't my first time. I have been editing video since before most of you were born, on tapes. Back when I worked on a fucking TOASTER (if you know what this is) and we had a SCSI-RAID with a cable as wide as your arm. So chill out. I know what I am doing. Shit works.

Remember that RAID 0 has no fault tolerance so if you lose one of those drives you lose all data across all five. Also, it is not hot swappable so don’t pull any of those drives out or you’ll lose all the data. These things are pretty reliable these days so the risk is lower than it used to be, but if you want to protect the data you want RAID 1 or 5.

Should of went with Synology and brand name drives. Hopefully those won't have any issues.

Some notes (not all the way thru video, so if you go over this, I apologize) that might help (and I'm not trying to bash the video, just trying to share information that may help, because data loss sucks): RAID is not a replacement for backup. RAID offers redundancy in case of drive failure. If data gets corrupted, infected, etc. it's simply going to replicate that same issue across the stripe. If you start with 5 x 4TB drives, in a typical RAID setup (RAID 5 for instance), you won't get 20TB, you'll basically be using one of the drives capacity for the parity stripe (in this case 4TB). So to start with, you'll have 16TB. Then there is also partitioning/formatting overhead and cluster size, which will probably leave you with about 14TB of storage space. If it's important data, I always recommend the 3-2-1 backup method. 3 Copies of the data, stored on 2 media types, with 1 offsite backup. And finally, in recent years, speed is no longer a huge issue when it comes to software vs. hardware RAID, so given the choice, I would choose software RAID. Hardware RAID is a pain in the rear to recover if the controller goes bad. You either have to replace it with the EXACT same hardware controller chip, or spend days deep scanning, hoping and praying it works. Software RAID is nice because it's hardware-agnostic. Actually, just got to the part where you selected RAID 0. I hate they call that RAID, it's not redundant. Please, don't select that. You'll be going from 1 point of failure (single drives you lose 1 drive, you lose all that drives data, but only that drive) to 5 points of failure (if you lose 1 drive, you lose the ENTIRE RAID span, all 5 drives are lost).

Park that RAID array behind a good CyberPower AVR and go with RAID-1 for the "redundancy". If your data is important to you, forget max capacity and mirror your drives.

A software raid can also be moved keeping the array and 1 Drive on the desktop.

If you know anyone that 3D prints you could get some sleeves inserts printed to hold the drives still to make sure they stay still in the bays .

It all comes down to the use case! If you need a lot of storage (I've got 30TB and looking to upgrade, probably going with a Synology NAS with ~80-120TB of space) I still think right now the best bang for the buck is a hardware NAS with mechanical drives. But for video editing I would recommend dedicated NVME drives in the system, as big as you can afford. Edit them on the NVME then toss them out to the NAS for backup. The reason is bandwidth - NVME drives are 10x faster than Thunderbolt, USB C, 10gig ethernet, or any other external connection (in the consumer space!). Less over head, too. But this will probably out perform whatever your system currently has.

Hope those drives are dependable, and even the actual storage size advertised. Never heard of that brand and I've seem some on Amazon getting off-brand storage that is not what is advertised in storage or dies quickly.

You are upgrading to something that suits you just fine. I am trying to move away from spinning HDD's and that is soon. I am thinking of trying an SSD on an old Windows XP computer to see if & how well that would work. With all my work, gardening, & I must watch some KZfaq, I may never know... maybe Linus will do a video on that :-) Thank you for sharing :-)

hey there video bob very good video and i know that a lot of people have posted and i might be repeating some things anyway when it comes to most peoples data it’s extremely valuable and you definitely don’t want to lose it now you didn’t sound like you were keeping your data all in one place this is smart however i just wanted to say something because of my personal bad experience and the data recovery process and it was only a single drive was so expensive i didn’t have backup of it and thankfully i got the data back because to lose my files of my dad and my grandparents were talking everything from pictures to videos his family genealogy truly it would be devastating anyway you kind of said what you plan to use the drive an i totally agree doing a hardware raid is the best way to go depending on the systems use it also will give you good performance overall but unless you’re working with massive files that requires a ton of storage for a short period of time i would never recommend a raid zero configuration the changes of a drive or controller failure is just far too high so now everyone has a opinion about what raid configuration to use and what is best an what is not i do have lots of experience with raid 6 it requires a minimum of 4 drives and you can lose 2 of them out of the 4 without losing any data now a hardware raid is the best in my experience however you really want to make sure the controller has battery backup and try to stay with known brands as a controller failing can be catastrophic to your data resulting in complete data loss with no recovery option in certain situations the battery backup is of course there in the event of power loss so any data stored in the controllers cash can be written when power is restored and the last thing you really want to be careful with the place you purchase your storage media as well as the brand as storage capacity being faked is a big problem these days it’s less of a problem if you’re getting the parts from the manufacturers own store on amazon sandisk for example or from a brick and mortar store im not familiar with the brand you picked personally but i will say that in most cases if it’s to good a deal it probably is so i always test the the drives now before i put them in a raid configuration and see if you get data corruption if you fill it half way this is a much harder thing to do on a spinning disk so normally you get what you ordered on a spinning disc plus it’s easier to get the main brands an the last thing with solid-state storage, you are limited on how many reads and writes you have as the flash storage wares and will fall over the an can’t be as easy to recover if needed because if the chips damaged it’s done so a spinning disc has its advantages but now im just rambling sorry for the long post but its helpful i hope 🤞

I've got that Yottamaster model you showed. That sucker is heafty. it weighs about 7 pounds empty. With my 5 18tb seagate enterprise drives in it, it's a good 15 pounds. But it's a great unit.

i currently use 11TB and just about full again, my back up KZfaq vids and media off my 2 phones take up most of that, i use mainly 1 phone for pics / vids and the other mainly vids. this is X2 as i have backed up on another PC outside the house

Depends if you want to save your original filming before editing. You can always get a second in the future if you need space.

Blackmagic Cloud Store (which is a device and not “in the cloud”) might be more expensive but it’s also the more reliable and seamless solution on Mac for video editing storage. This solution looks like it could be a little janky, tbh. The no-name SSDs don’t inspire confidence either, but I’m paranoid about data integrity.

Love your videos. Just a heads up in all well meaning. Be very careful with storing valuable things on that device and disks in raid. If one disk goes bad everything will be lost ask me how i know. If I knew what I went through before, I would have gone with a bigger TB dual disk NAS where one disk work as a backup to the other one. That way you will always have a working backup if one disk goes bad. So please what ever you do dont store your valuable memories on that storage you bought. Regards from Sweden.

I've written off 2.5 ssd's. Everything is going nvme. The real world lifetime of nvme drives is way longer than necessary for most people. I bought a 2TB nvme that I'm in the process of swapping into my notebook. I'll take the old 1TB nvme and swap it into my server that currently is using a 512G. Then the 512G will go into an external USB case. They're great for trickle-down upgrades.

I went thru years of using PC parts that always failed.......I look at it like this, I started sparing no expense when in comes to my tool box and Corsair products are very good in RAM, SSD's, and cooling.......water cooled shit

unfortunately, the SATA SSD speeds will be limited by the interface, 800+ MB is decent, an M.2 NVMe RAID enclosure is probably the way to go. With modern PCIe 4.0 or 5.0 SSDs, you're talking up to 7,000MB+

I've got 32 TB myself but your calculations are a tad off on this one Bob. Ok, the connection you have going from the drive bay is 10 Giga BIT per second. Not byte. There is a difference. The particular drives you got are able to read up to 560 Mega BYTES per second and write up to 500 MB/s. NVMes, while more expensive, can read/write anywhere from 3,000-7,000 MB/s, 10 times faster than your standard SSD. Yeah if you're building a NAS, speed isn't necessarily always your priority, but if you were doing something, say editing a video for KZfaq and the video files were being pulled from the NAS, that's where you can experience a bottleneck, under heavier loads. Not too shabby otherwise, but just because the bay says "10 Gbps." No. RAIDs can fail as well. Just because it's an SSD doesn't mean it's fullproof. RAID5 is the best bang for your buck because, while you'd only have 16TB instead of your 20...you could at least have a drive fail and not lose any data. Thus you could replace it if need be without losing anything.

No redundancy is the only issue with RAID 0 - how will you back it up? Cloud?

You'd never see the rated speeds from NVMe drives in an external enclosure like that. SATA SSD's are probably the cheapest fastest option in your use case.
