Where do you stand on alcohol in skincare - yay or nay?
@moose8762
@moose8762 3 жыл бұрын
Personally, nay. I actually rarely see skincare products with small particle alcohols in them because of the consumer demand for "alcohol free" products. I used to use sunscreens with alcohol in them and eventually they start to make my skin feel raw and uncomfortable - I wasn't moisturising before them. I prefer to avoid any ingredients that might potentially compromise my skin without providing any benefit (or provides a benefit that can be replicated without its use in a different formulation). So, I don't use fragrance, essential oils, or alcohol denat. Similarly, I use gentle cleansers and skin barrier supporting ingredients year round. I think that this gives more room to use retinoids and vitamin C and exfoliants. Some people can tolerate fragrance; every fragranced product I have tried has inflamed my skin eventually or immediately. At the same time, my skin isn't the most sensitive and I can use retinoids, salicylic acid, vitamin C, every AHA except for glycolic (which causes some heat on my skin) without irritation

@@DoctorAnne yes, it has taken me over a year to find out what works for my skin and some if the things I use wouldn't be good for other people's skin (like 10% urea which sting some people). I have gotten over my fragrance bias when it comes to other people. I do like fragrance in body moisturisers

When I was young, Clinique came out with their three step skin care. With my oily combination skin, I fell into Type 2. The Clarifying Lotion was loaded with alcohol and made my skin stripped, angry and oily. I used it for more years than I like to admit because I thought they knew what they were doing. They didn't.

I have heard many not so great things about that three step system... Never tried it myself. It is a shame though as they do have some really nice products that get overshadowed now. When I was young, I used toners heavy in alcohol and not much else as well, NOT a good idea.

I have just found your channel and so far I am loving it, especially thank you for this video. I have been using the E Nature squeezy watery gel cream and I love it, but it contains alcohol and actually quite high up in the list, so I was a bit skeptical because of what everyone says about alcohol, but since it was a moisturizer I was like I guess it is fine, but now my doubts have cleared and will use it more comfortable now :)

I was ok with a few sunscreen with alcohol, mainly for the fluid texture. But I wonder if I should avoid alcohol since I started to use retinol? Also I try to use all fragrance free skincare now, so any alcohol(ish) smell in skincare becomes just toooo strong... Love your videos dr. And thanks for replying my retinol questions. BR from Canada

@DoctorAnne

No, it all depends on the formula. The higher it is up on the list though, the more alcohol it contains, so if you know you don’t react well to it, maybe avoid the products where it is listed first or second.

My mind is blown with the information of this video. I don't think I have problem with alcohol in my skincare. I alternate the use of tretinoin and glycolic acid (and other activities in my skincare) so I don't know that I would even notice if I had a problem with it. All skincare companies are in it for profit, so I highly doubt that they would be putting anything in the products that would make people stop buying their products. This is one conspiracy theory I don't believe. Before we start attacking alcohol in skincare how about FIRST we make sure we get enough water during the day and we hydrate properly🤷🏻‍♀️

No. I don't think they're bad. Everyone's skin reacts differently. I use Curel makeup cleansing gel. I think it's denatured alcohol listed at the bottom. It's the 2nd to last ingredient. I have dry, sensitive, rosacea skin. No issues here. But as long as it's at the bottom I can accept that.
