Its seems that everyday there’s a new ingredient we need to be scared of or an old fave that’s actually been destroying our skin.
However what this seems to stem from is people taking studies or even experts quotes of of context, cherry picking data and forming an ew narrative. And also just a lack of understanding how the chemistry of skincare works.
Now, as we know, I’m not a chemist or nor do I have any certifications in the skincare realm. So as always, I want to share some informative posts from some of the amazing skincare experts and scientists I follow online, and crush a few ingredient myths.
Also sorry, please remember that all ingredients have the ability it irritate your skin or simply not work for you, so whilst the ingreiwdnats I’m talking about today are largely demonised, no one is discrediting or ignoring your personal irritations or hatred for these ingredients and it sucks that your skin hates them. .

Just want to make it clear that I had only heard people say ‘people with black skin’ cannot use glycolic acid. Didn’t realise the idea was that NO POC could use glycolic acid! I thought people were just being overly PC! Okay so I knew people in the comments would be like ‘but this person says this and this Person says that!’. I purposely follow a wide range of experts with varying opinions and backgrounds within skincare. I often end up quoting the people who I find are unbiased and don’t bring personal opinion into their research but rather break down the evidence and science that is there. So please take a look at all the profiles I share and let’s learn some shit! Annalisa - Cosmetic formulator @ skinperspective sent me what little research that has been done on black skin when it comes to the effects of glycolic acid: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/9145958/ pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28114204/ www.cutis.com/the-publication/past-issues-single-view/postinflammatory-hyperpigmentation-in-patients-with-skin-of-color/5679bba69128c0285148da09a8862b91.html

I truly understand and appreciate the purpose of this video. But I’ve heard that certain ingredients can be detrimental to skin of colour because we hyperpigment at the slightest sign of irritation. I’m finding it difficult to reconcile this with what you’re saying because a lot of the non-white estheticians I follow advise us to stay away from all these ingredients because they can be sensitizing over a long period of time.

Thank you! I used to be one of those people obsessed with everything being “natural.” Now that I’m 37, I’ve discovered that my skin LOVES Glycolic acid, HATES salicylic acid for some reason (it creates these psoriasis-type of dry red patches on my face and neck) and loves retinol, but only in low doses. My skin also HATE HATE HATES mineral sunscreen - which I always heard was supposed to be the “good stuff” as opposed to chemical sunscreens, which would give me cancer or something. 😒 Interestingly, chemical sunscreens are totally fine on my skin, and anything with zinc gives me this heat-rash sweat-rash type reaction that is shocking red with hard pimply bumps and discomfort. Nope, never again hippies, y’all done me wrong for too long! 😂😂

This is why I love your channel because you don't demonize ingredients even if your skin don't like them. My friend cannot use any products that has Niacinamide in it because she always have a reaction to it but so many "influencers" and professionals push it as a holy grail ingredient. I don't get that either why people just won't just say black people because saying people of color is lumping millions of people into this category.

I can't use niacinamide too because it makes my skin itch like crazy. And the cult favourite, The Ordinary Niacinamide serum gave me a breakout. I used 3 niacinamide-containing products so I can safely confirm my skin HATES it. Kind of disappointed because it's such an amazing ingredient AND so many skincare products have niacinamide in them, which means they're off limits to me! AAAAAAAAAA
@theohsospontaneous

I too belong to the Niacinamide intolerant group😭. I was using a serum (TO Niacinamde) that made my skin look amazing but kept breaking me out for almost a year. I was able to narrow it down to Niacinamide as the culprit. (Recently took multivitamins orally with niacinamide and guess who broke out 3 days later?) I hate how people don't understand that no products will work for ALL. And people will keep pushing niacinamide down my throat as if to say my skin is purposely trying to be a rebel. Everyone needs to assess their skin individually and recommend with a pinch of salt ALWAYS
@r.r.4809
@r.r.4809 3 жыл бұрын
that serum from The Ordinary contains 10% niacinamide - which is way higher than optimal - and is formulated with zinc, which can result in drying out the skin. therefore it's not really effective. for people whose only experience with niacinamide is that TO serum, i would recommend trying out a product with a lower concentration of the ingredient - 2% or 5% for example

Some people skin doesn't take well to Niacinamide. She has never tried TO Niacinamide product but has tried other brands that does contain a lower percentage. One that drives me crazy is that people keep referencing a study on olive oil where it was used on preterm newborns at 100% and showed that rather than protecting their skin, it actually showed some evidence of breakdown of the skin barrier. Excuse me, I am not a preterm newborn! What does that study using 100% olive oil have to do with me using an oil cleanser that contains some olive oil or a body cream that contains olive oil and several other ingredients?

I have watched her videos and they are very informative but some information I don't agree with based on my experience and what others have seen in their skin. For instance, she advised people of color not to use vitamin C during the day and my derm and esthetician who are both black have advised me to use it during the day and I have seen amazing results in my skin. I say take all advice with a grain of salt and figure out what works best for your skin (type & concerns). Also, remember these individuals are seeing the worst cases so they err on the side of caution. I didn't know some controversy was happening with her but I did know that she has her own products such as UV Blocking Sunglasses and a lip care kit to fight hyperpigmentation (Dr. Alexis reviewed it after Dr. V sent it to her).

Not sure where these people are getting that hyram is arrogant and judgemental. He's literally trying to be inclusive by promoting products that sensitive-skin AND non-sensitive skin can use, therefore incorporating a wider range audience. Going by ingredients just makes the most sense when he is reviewing other people's skincare routines and giving his opinion on the products used. When he does give product recommendations, he does mention how it can help different skin types. If you still feel like his skincare opinions are arrogant and judgemental idk what to tell you other than it just isn't lol.

Not really. The US doesn’t have as long a list, but that’s because the ingredients were never used in US skincare. For example, the EU has rocket fuel on their list. The US didn’t bother to list it because it was never used in skincare. If you want to know more, you can google it. Now it’s different for fragrance, the US doesn’t regulate fragrance as well as the EU.

So happy to have found your channel; I adore your emphasis on research and the recommendations of experts to follow. I feel like the bigger problem with fragrances in skin care (and cosmetics) is that certain and/or strong fragrances can be migraine triggers. Random thing: I'm one of the people whose skin dislikes ceramides.

I stopped using witch hazel maybe 3 or 4 years back because it made my thoat dry and burn up just from smelling it, and it definitely didn’t work well with my skin. Sure, I had a bad reaction to it, but I didn’t go off telling other people it was some sort of evil. Obviously people had been using it since it was on the market in the first place. A product or ingredient not meshing with you doesn’t make it bad.

Thank you so much for addressing this matter, I believe what can be harmful for one person can be good for other. One example is Fenty’s cleanser which I absolutely love but watching all the reviews everyone complained that there was fragrance in it to me it does not bother me however no one was addressed that the overall product is really good , sad to say because of these reviews it can influence someone to not purchase certain products. So thank you for using your influence in educating and giving informative reviews.

But now I discovered the brand iunik And there propolis cream and serum and again, propolis has saved my skin... so a tip if you have rosacea- propolis!

The mistake some people make is they do not know their skin type. They usually don't use the right products for their skin type and then demonise the products. Another thing is your skin has a cycle so your skin sometimes needs to adjust to the change. People also tend to use the products incorrectly.

I wonder if the "POC can't use glycolic acid" stems from the idea that glycolic acid is used in a lot of "skin whitening" foreign products? By "whitening" most of those products mean "brightening" through the resurfacing actions of AHAs but I can imagine that the fear of lightening a deeper skin tone would be enough to deter many people!

I think you are absolutely right, which is why I think James says "it's the dose that makes the poison"
@ArianaCrow
@ArianaCrow 3 жыл бұрын
I think there’s some truth to this. I started using glycolic acid before the POC myth gained some traction on social media and I’d never had any adverse effects. I think it can do more damage to darker skin that’s sensitive or that’s been sensitized but otherwise it seems that those using it moderately have gotten great results and it’s actually helped to fade their hyperpigmentation. Key word is moderately and at a lower percentage, between 5-7 %
@ahem8013
@ahem8013 3 жыл бұрын
Shivee Chauhan Hey I’m a newly licensed Esthetician and I’m curious what this hyperpigmentation looked like (if ur comfortable answering)? Like did the glycolic make certain pre-existing spots worse, or cause some pigmentation over the whole area you applied it, or both? I want to be able to treat all clients effectively and I haven’t seen this happen yet in person but I’ve def heard a lot about it so I’m extra careful with exfoliation on my dark-skinned (esp sensitive) clients.

@@ahem8013 I've got medium brown skin, and it made areas where my skin is drier, slightly darker, just around my chin x I still use it on my forehead and cheeks though and not had any hyper pigmentation so its only affected dry areas in my experience Congratulations on becoming qualified, it's great that you want to learn about all skin tones 😃
@zareenthomas9750

Check out Dr Vanita Rattan on youtube. Glycolic acid is a risk for skin of colour because there is a potential for burning to happen and it *has* happened for a lot of people. And the post inflammatory inflammation becomes harder to deal with. So generally POC are advised to go for milder AHAs ; just to be on the safer side.

@xErinxx
@xErinxx 3 жыл бұрын
@@kacisylvain4393 it depends what product the witch hazel is in! If it’s in a treatment it may be different that’s why, but my witch hazel is in a toner, which is basically in between a moisturizer and a serum. You put it on after you wash your face and leave it on. I personally like putting that specific toner on when my face is damp because I feel like it absorbs better. I hope that helps!

Some common sense thoughts on alcohol: I use hand sanitizer with 70% ethyl alcohol religiously. The sanitizer I use has been formulated to include a lotion and some soothing ingredients. Been using the same product for the last 4 months and my hands have never dried out or gotten flaky or anything. There's clearly enough moisturizing properties in this hand sanitizer to counter the effects of TEWL in a product that is literally 70% alcohol because my hands are still moisturized. On that note, sunscreens that contains denatured alcohol as the 3rd-5th ingredient don't worry me at all because it's likely only about 10% of the formulation while the rest of it is literally water, sunscreen ingredients, and occlusives. The only thing I would say is that alcohol is a volatile ingredient, meaning that it is highly reactive. The second it lands anywhere it wants to evaporate, and in rare cases (ie. people with extra dry skin, extreme rosacea, etc) the mechanism of the evaporation may cause irritation, but shouldn't last very long because all the other ingredients are staying on your face to protect your skin. TL:DR - Alcohol is fine for most people, and try the product before judging it and other people that use it so harshly.

I feel a lot of people make a huge fuss about ingredients and forget that it’s 2020 - a company or brand aren’t adding “scary” ingredients into products just to annoy us or stop people buying it, it’s because that particular product benefits from it.

I always find these conversations interesting. I have fairly sensitive skin. And I have had so many reactions to "natural" products. I got a severe rash from a sap moss product line (Aveda) and have had chemical burns from "pure" products (like Ivory soap and Aveno skin care) that needed a dermatologist to heal. I have learned to patch test everything and use what works for me.
