One Piece is what people felt when they 1st read Tolkein's books or watched LotR trilogy.... it's a journey with MANY twists & turns, laughs & cries, jaw dropping & inspirational moments... best part in all of this is how vast it is and yet there are so much mystery still unsolved not to mention the tie ins with earlier arcs

I disagree. I think he is also talking about the whole atmosphere different mangas bring. Like, Berserk really has its own distinguishable dark and eery atmosphere and setting of which the amazing artstyle enhances. I just hate that Connor isn't even trying to put those things into words. Almost nothing is "it is just because it is". Also while One Piece is a shonen, because it is released on WSJ, it most definitely has “seinin vibes”-One Piece is filled with a lot of subject matter that only young adults and older, with some basic media literacy, could appreciate or understand

I mean I love berserk but like 90% of it is just Guts getting thrashed around and cutting shit up. I even eventually got tired of it and had to take a long ass break reading other stuff before I got back to it. So at least for me Berserk def wouldn't be a Berserk or a "VIBE" without the story.

I just don't understand this notion that One Piece has bad art. It really doesn't at all. Yes, manga like Vagabond and Berserk are exceptional in that regard. Nearly anything will seem weak in comparison so I don't think that's fair. One Piece though is still pretty great in it's own right, especially in the way Oda frames certain panels. Very stylized, incredibly dynamic and eye catching.

I don't even read manga, but I do check out the Manga pictures of animes I watch. And One Piece is so damn detailed and has some of the most impactful images. Sure, the art style is cartoonish, likes to be lighthearted, and doesn't take itself too seriously. But only a good artist would be able to draw like Oda does.

Nah I understand him completely but he’s right it’s kinda hard to explain. I am always up to date with the one piece manga whereas I struggle to get motivated sometimes to continue the berserk manga where I left off, so I’d say I def enjoy one piece more. However, if one piece had no story, it would not be as enjoyable of a read (has no “vibe”). If berserk had no story, it’s still an enjoyable read to me, not just from the art itself but the action and pretty much everything still feels great. One piece falls apart without the story for me. Of course “vibe” is subjective so anyone can find a “vibe” in any show or media even if someone else disagrees.

I STARTED READING OP for the vibe. Heck I didn't no shit about anime and the community. I had watched 2 anime ,Naruto and AOT upto season 3 and wanted to give a manga try and decided on OP cause I saw a picture of Luffy in gear 2 post with armament haki and flames and then on a jump force all ultimates video saw Luffy's and thought he was shooting actual canon balls out of his hands. I thought they can shoot bulltes from their hands and get powerups like canonballs and missiles😂. I hadn't even seen any of the crewmates, didn't even know if was about pirates and didn't even know Luffy's name was Luffy. Just hopped on a manga website there it was right at the top and started reading. Got hooked from chapter 1 and read all the way to the end of Arlong park on my first day and for the 1st time in my life cried by reading a book ( Nami's moms death) . Like I didn't even know what an arc was just 100% spoiler free and enjoyed the journey of Luffy gathering new nakama and the journey. I have read more than 30 manga now (Including stuff like berserk, hxh, Vinland saga) but nothing has given me that sense of adventure,immersion and the "Vibe" that early OP gave me. Now tbh for me OP kinda lost this for me after like Ennies Lobby. Not that it got bad, cause the marineford saga is fcking peak but even post timeskip nothing ever gave me that feeling until Dressrosa (its my top2 arc) . I know a lot fan of the anime and weekly readers dislike this arc but I read it in 2 days and it had so many Iconic moments and I finally got to see boundman which was probably my most anticipated thing to see since its one of the 2 things that made me read the story.

One Piece is not only about its story; there are many people who enjoy One Piece without delving into the theories or knowing every detail of the story so that nothing gets past them or are not watching because of the destination. One Piece is fun and has very endearing characters; that's enough to enjoy it (like a feel-good show). Obviously, it's not the same as Berserk, whose action and art draw attention to themselves. One Piece has a vibe, only different from Berserk.

Yes, the amount of abuse some characters receive sepcially from celestial dragon and even robin just recently when kuma blast them in sabaody. Robin landed the snowy place and was captured with only a spandex as a suit with no undergarment. You can imagine what she went thru

I kinda get what Connor means with One Piece, if Enies Lobby didn't happen and the show just went on as it was at that point it would've gotten pretty stale eventually. I'm just more upset they described the "vibe" of a series and NO ONE mentioned Samurai Champloo. That whole series is just Vibe in its purest form.

I don't agree. Even if I weren't following the story, the designs of the islands, characters and all sorts of devil fruit powers would still be interesting for me to explore. Before knowing anything about Kaido, I loved his design and couldn't wait to see more. In fact I'd say it's one of the few series that wouldn't get stale for me, because it gets progressively crazier and more creative and learning more about the world is very interesting.

Ironically One Piece has a vibe and it's practically contradictory to story and how rich it is. The One Piece vibe is going to an unknown island and seeking out interesting things to do simply because it's an adventure. The One Piece vibe is having characters in a serious fight suddenly make the dumbest hilarious comments because real life is a lot more unpredictable and goofy than we give it credit. The One Piece vibe is having sad characters cry with ugly snott nosed faces because they're humans feeling the rawest of emotions, not these idealistic puppets that have to look deep no matter what they are doing. They don't have a reason to hold that snot in. One piece is about the adventure. The now. The losing yourself to whatever situation and or island the group find themselves in. It's why most of One Piece is this this random adventure on these seemingly unimportant islands. Of course there's deep world-building and lore but we only got the payoffs to it some 700 chapters later when some of the longest successful manga end at 600. The One Piece vibe is Luffy being the first goofy protagonist looking for adventure in shounen since kid Goku! Literally every other protagonist is after some clear motive and\or is seriously smarter! One Piece plot is amazing but if One Piece was actually plot focused from the start would've ended ages ago. The vibes is really it's main selling point and most people can't tell why they like it because they're just having fun going through the ride.

With the whole conversation of " what is art" both Connor and Garnt are right. Connor is looking at it from the creative process, and Garnt is looking at it from the appreciative aspect. Art doesn’t have to be created by humans to be considered art, but art only exists if humans are around to appreciate it.

I agree with Conor here. The word vibe is used for something you can't quantify. The way they laugh at his struggle to explain it makes him argue even more, cause it sounds as though they don't take him seriously. It's the most unnerving thing. As someone who used the Water 7/ennies lobby arc as a dnd setting, you can absolutely remove all characters and context from One Piece without removing the vibe. To my point, the vibes aren't unexplainable and I CAN explain the specifics of it point for point. It hit the players as hard as the anime did for me and they fucking hated One Piece (loved the game, still hasn't forgiven me afte I told them XD) Edit: I am baffled that Google gave a better explanation of art than all 3 of them XD

Conor refutes his point by saying One Piece is nothing without its story but says Berserk is vibes. But then says anything can be vibes. Vibe is - visual aesthetic. - mood and tone of concepts - feeling that its intentionally trying to illicit So yes everything has a vibe. But when people refer to something as just “Vibes” they are saying that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Like you can’t pin point just one thing that makes it bespoke or good. It’s the overall composition. And in a lot of ways indescribable.
