If a person cannot explain what they like about the anime, they will just think "I just vibe with it". But in reality, there is of course a reason, any reason that makes you vibe with a medium. Exactly why connor refers to music as beeps and boops. He's actually the definition of monke and doesnt really think deeper on topics like this.

@@TheIceman101418 Connor is just one of those people who doesn't like to think. I don't mean that as an insult, but that's a pretty consistent thing with him. He knows when he likes the thing or doesn't like the thing, but he doesn't care enough to think about why. For example: he infamously said music is just noise despite clearly enjoying music. He's just using the word "Vibe" because he doesn't know how to articulate his feelings. It's basically the same as if someone asked him why he liked something and he responded with "I just do."
@martindang7333
@martindang7333 22 күн бұрын
@@Sharkofspace I disagree. He is very smart and articulate and I'm sure he'd find a way to articulate his thoughts if he felt the need. The entire point of his argument is that reasoning out what makes a story good is not neccesary. What matters is what emotions/atmosphere/vibe are evoked, not pedantics about plot, story, themes etc.(these terms are very inconsistent every time they're used). In the end of the day all these concepts serve to describe the emotions art creates in us, at least in mine and prob connors view, which btw is not a simplistic view and indeed corresponds to one of the core beliefs of existentialism(existence before essence). I would say he is trying not to be overly pedantic about art, because thats what art truly is to him. He would be in great company , since most artists think intuitively about art as opposed to how academics and critics view art. That makes sense since out of the 3 he is most concerned with creative pursuits (garnt and joey are primarily critics). His view is completely valid and in no way inferior to a more analytic view of art.

@@martindang7333 I agree with this. Joey and Garnt's points are that you can pinpoint a specific factor of the art style or the plot or the music that quantifies the vibe. I agree. On a side I agree with him on things like they can't be quantified etc, on the other side I'm with them: he's way too much doublestandard in determining what vibes are and if there are or not. In that way one can use the term for everything and nothing :| Like: I agree with that thing about every panel in Berserk having powerful vibes, but "vibes" aren't some esoteric power, they aren't there cause the page has midichlorians or the ink was made by some mysterious isotope that emanates "vvvvvibes". The vibes are conveyed through the masterful way Miura used composition, lineart, portrayal of motion, design, etc. They aren't thing that can be quantified in numbers, but they are thing you can determine and analyze, they aren't some nebulous "VVVVVVIIIIBEEEES!" xD

When Connor's talking about "vibe", he seems to be talking about a work's tone or atmosphere and the art style that provides that. For the "art" description, me and my art professor discussed about it. "Art" is a human-made creative expression through a medium. It's why scenery or objects that are naturally created by nature rather than humans don't count as art just because it looks "beautiful".

Strictly speaking, I think he means vibe as in, his emotional connection to a piece of work. In an attempt to help Connor try to understand what "Vibe" is Vibe is basically STYLE. And it's not limited to art style. Style can be fashion direction, cinematography (how the panel is sliced/framed), music direction, etc etc. You, Connor, happen to like dark + cool + violent vibes, which lines up perfectly with Berserk. One Piece's vibes are silly + fun vibes. And yes, slice of life stuff ALSO HAS A VIBE. Chill vibes. Stuff like Domestic Kanojo and Kuzu no Honkai has a vibe. Angsty vibe. In my understanding, it's supposed to be any kind of underlying composition that creates atmosphere and enhances or convey underlying themes. This does not require the characters as agents of the story to do anything in particular to invoke an emotional response. My latest example would be Boy and the Heron. The movie is a very simple story for the fundamental plot. But there are so many aspects to the millions of details that create underlying themes that are hard to grasp without external context. Thus it creates a vibe that doesn't rely on the plot of the movie to move in this direction. BUT I think it's a very different thing for evefy medium due to the qualities of each medium. Anime has different dimensions such as time which makes pacing of moment to moment situations more relevant. While manga has a pacing on the bigger the scale, the flow of panels and the way how much is portrqyed in the limited pages. But a reader is the one dictating the amount of time they view each page. So every page can become a painting to observe and "vibe" with. And then there is the entire aspect of systems theory and cybernetics but that's going too deep. Media student out.

Some movie/anime will just blaze through a convo, but then you find those shows that do dramatic pauses with excellent results and feel "Damn, that's so vibe when the music stopped as he paused before saying 'I loved you' " or something It is everything as a package, the combination of fashion, music, art style, camera work, timing, but not focused on the story/character action itself. For example, a show can be about the horrors of WW2, but if you use comedic vibe with silly cuts and upbeat BGM, you get a completely different product.

To anyone interested, I think the best publicly documented case of controlling the vibe to a perfect degree that you can in essence ORDER your audience to cry on cue, is Kimi No Na Wa / Your Name. Takehiko Inoue is the GOAT. 49:24 to correct Joey, Real came out AFTER Vagabond started releasing so its actually the other way around. Inoue took a hiatus from writing Vagabond to write Real instead. Inoue has this sense of responsibility in maintaining an impossible perfectionist standard in regards to Vagabond so he writes Real as a break from his burnout working on Vagabond. Also it's not in "permanant hiatus". Real's latest chapter was released this February.

I totally get what Connor means by feeling the "vibe" of a media. You can and cannot explain the specifics of the vibe. I think vibe is a very personal way of how people connect with a piece of media. Garnt's and Joey's interpretation of vibe seems to be based on more logical and rational factors (like art style or storytelling etc.) that convey the vibe of a piece of media. As Connor said, for him, the "vibe" can't be clearly defined. A show can make no sense at all but you can still connect with the show; you feel the "vibe" even though you can't really explain why you enjoy the show. It's more on an emotional basis, therefore it can be rather irrational that sometimes can't be explained in a logical way. I mean in the end it's totally subjective what gives you the vibes.

I completely understood connor's view on the vibe because thats exactly how i feel. There is more to the vibe than the story. There is the setting, the mood, the character designs, the aura and so much more. Lets say one piece is drawn in miura's style. The vibe would still be different due to the character designs. Just by looking at guts and his gritty armor, you can see his dark vibe. Luffy on the other hand looks more carefree with his free flowing bright red vest, light blue jorts and slippers.

Vibes, etymologically speaking, come from vibration and frequency. It's a deep rabbi hole with for example that water freezes differently with different music, which is controversial. But ultimately, it's about "being on the same frequency" with something after you first "get it" and then you "vibe" with it. It's subjective and emotional, and can't really be fully explained on an intellectual level.

Vibe - a person's emotional state or the atmosphere of a place as communicated to and felt by others. The vibe of a piece of art is but one small part of what makes it unique. @Kriss_941
@Kriss_941 23 күн бұрын
@@minie776 Exactly my reaction. I think the reason they didn't get into it is that it seems only Garnt has actually read the manga, and while it's hard to say based on his video alone it doesn't seem like he completely caught onto a lot of the smaller details and things that would elevate it from just a good manga to a great one. I could also be wrong here as it could just be time restrictions making him cut things down for the video, or him trying to avoid any spoilers... But he never got into things like how the characters and their personalities are represented as tarot cards and how the story mirrors the fool's journey. He never got into any of the foreshadowing and small details such as the "chin touching", Kaneki's relationship with his mom, the symbolism of his hair color, even the damn title of :re which was right in front of readers for like 80 chapters without the community catching onto what it actually meant. He did touch on some of the great points though such as the depth of characters, how morally ambiguous it can sometimes be, and how Ishida breaks the mold with his panels to really show the emotions of the characters. But despite all this it doesn't feel like he really "got" everything, at least not from just what was presented in the video. Again, it could just be to avoid spoilers, but from his video he still presents it as if Kaneki became a ghoul by accident and incompetence on the doctors parts... He doesn't really discuss some of the major differences between the anime and manga such as what actually happens post "white hair Kaneki" and he doesn't really touch on the details missed in any of the anime adaptations, such as the scene in :re where they forgot to make Haise touch his chin in the anime! Out of context it sounds like an extremely nitpicky details to complain about, but in the context of Tokyo Ghoul it's about as bad as it gets as it litterally gives the scene the opposite meaning of what it's supposed to convey!

Well, I always have the manga to look back at. It's a masterpiece imo. Sad that some people won't give it a read based on what the adaptation showed.

Hard to disagree with it because it is literally everything and at the same time nothing. Like if you tell someone what they liked about the movie and they respond with “everything, it was a good movie, it made me feel satisfied.” Okay but what made it a good movie? “Everything. Made me feel satisfied” Garnt and Joey wanted specifics.

Just to add my opinion on the Vibe Discussion: I have this idea of 'charm' where you can let a story with objective faults slide because the other aspects carries it.

Nah i agree everything effects the vibe, vibe is like a sampling of everything, tone, art, story, characters, dynamics, dialogue, pacing etc. Not everything is weighted the same between each individual piece of media but everything plays a part. A lot of times vibe is mostly art & tone but even then everything plays a part. Like even if the artstyle is gorgeous and consistent if the characters and dialogue conflicts with it in a way that doesnt mesh, it wont vibe well. Even the medium effects the vibes to the point where some pieces just cant be the vibe in one form. Also personal perspective also effects vibe significantly, theres a reason works, like some shoujo stuff, vibes much more for women.

The thing with Solo Leveling is that if you were one of the people who was following with the series when the manhwa was still on-going, you'd be blinded by the ride the train of hype every update, that's probably why it is so popular. But if you picked up the series when it was completed yeah its just demon slayer (the anime) in manhwa form

Solo Leveling had a recap due to concerns regarding the health of the main character's VA. He had tested positive for covid and there's also rumours that he had coughed up blood during one of the recordings. So rather than entirely delaying an episode, they opted to at least get a recap episode out. So it was either recap that week, or nothing. Perhaps nothing would have been better in hindsight since the anime fans went rabbid.
