There's always been a debate whether or not DC Comic's Batman is a true ninja or not. With the Ninja Batman movie coming out in 2018 you'd think at this point he would be, but why is he wearing samurai armor? Let's put the debate to an end and see just how real of a ninja Batman really is!

One thing you forgot to mention. There is a reason he's called "The Great Detective". He gathers information much like a ninja does. He even painted his room yellow aboard the justice league headquarters because of green lanterns weakness to yellow. He knows both his enemies and allies weaknesses and strategically uses them to his advantage.

Depends on the time period. Back in the day, Green Lantern rings were useless against anything yellow. It would be later explained that a monster called Parallax (basically the living embodiment of fear) was the reason for this. Nowadays, GLs can use their rings on yellow objects as long as they remember what they fear and overcome it.

i think the reason why batman often times decides to go the direct route (kicking ass instead of going sneaky) is part of his mind games, he wants criminals to be afraid of him so he has to show them that he can deliver pain when he wants to.

I think something important to point out when people say that Batman is too combative to be a ninja is that, as you said in your Genji guide, historical ninja were squishy - one wrong move and they would be dead, unable to complete their mission. If a historical ninja tried to fight groups like Batman does they would be met with a bunch of people with swords and other melee weapons who all knew exactly how to use them. They would also be extremely vulnerable to ranged weapons like warbows and guns, since they didn't have armor that could really stand up them. Their only real choice was to disappear where their enemies couldn't find them to attack them. For Batman on the other hand, with his billion-dollar bulletproof supersuit, that's much less of a concern - and his opponents are much more likely to be trained with guns than to be extremely skillful in melees. With that in mind he fights in close quarters where tracking him with a gun is more difficult because he can cover a much larger angle of an enemy's field of view in a very short time, obscure his movements with his cape, and use the battarangs to disarm said enemy(ies). So he's unusually combative, yes, but he's also putting his enemies in a position where he has a huge advantage over them and living in an age without a heavy emphasis on swords and melee fighting - he can *afford* to stick around and fight, where historical ninja just couldn't.

All great points, another thing that points to him being more like a ninja is his emphasis on not killing. Batman always incapacitates his enemies rather than killing them. And once they are incapacitated he disappears from the scene as fast as he arrived.
@hyperbiscuit2284
@hyperbiscuit2284 2 жыл бұрын
I'd say another major difference is in goals. Ninja were generally used as spies. Batman on the other hand is dedicated to fighting organized crime. So while ninja focus far more on gathering information, Batman still has to "fight" the crime he seeks to stop, so being more combative fits his goal.

Also, on batman's color scheme of black and grey. He operates in an urban environment. Quickest easiest way to say why this is good is look up "urban camo" from pretty much any military branch in any country that has concrete jungles of sky scrapers scattered across the land. Urban camo is various shades of grey to blend in with an urban environment that has various shades of grey since it's made of concrete and stone. Gotham is full of tall buildings made of concrete. And a lot of times in batman comics and IRL in an urban environment peoples site doesn't always have a clear view of the sky and there's more grey tones than anything else. So, in the modern day grey is one of the most effective colors to camouflage with. In art color classes students are taught to use grey to show something is in the distance also. The further away the more everything starts to blend into the color grey [another reason]. But basically Camo is pretty simple: Dress in a color that there's more of in the area. In a city, grey. In the jungle, green.

Funnily enough, however, I remember one episode of the Animated Series having Batman confront a ninja, and when the Ninja compares the two of them, Batman says he prefers to think of himself as a samurai. There's a Batman show titled The Batman. It focuses on Batman's early days, back before the police saw him as an ally, and it shows the origins of several villains. The main formula for each episode is that a new villain appears, Batman tries to stop the villain but fails, then he does more research on said villain to find their weakness, then beats them with new tactics based on the knowledge he collected. I loved this show when I was younger and I recommend it for anyone who's a Batman fan.

"You will never find a more punch happy superhero than batman" That is a total and utter lie. Every single hero in the justice league is more punch happy than batman. ESPECIALLY superman and wonderwoman. Batman is a hero who relies on his tools and tricks more than just beating the crap out of people. Like his classic batarangs or his fairly often seen smoke bombs and grappling hook. In fact he's far more about jumping down and kicking someone in the back with his downward momentum. Come on Gaijin.

Since Batman is one of the finest human combatants Earth has ever known. He was trained around the world for years to master multiple martial arts. Master Kirigi stated to Bruce that he is a natural genius in fighting due to "his great violent nature inside of him". Even Karate Kid of the future was very surprised that Bruce adapted and learned future-style combat in seconds that he never even experienced. He has completely mastered all unarmed hand-to hand combat styles of martial arts including MMA, Muay Thai, Escrima, Krav Maga, Capoeira, Savate, Yawyan, Taekwondo, Judo, Jui-jitsu, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, Ninjutsu, Kendo, Fencing, Kenjutsu, Kali, Bojutsu, Wrestling, Francombat, Boxing, Kickboxing, Hapkido, Sambo, Wing Chun, Parkour, Shorin Ryu, Silat, Chin Na, Kyudo, Aikido, Varma Ati, Jeet Kune Do, Shaolin, Ba Gua, Hung Gar, Tai Chi, Kung Fu, Kenpo, and Karate. His primary form of combat is a harmonious mixture of Jui-jitsu, Taekwondo, Judo, Muay Thai, Savate, Karate, Kung Fu, Boxing, Capoeira, Krav Maga, Aikido, and Ninjutsu.

Batman has always struck me as what you get when you try to meld a samurai and a ninja for the most purely efficient aspects of both. His job is to instill fear, gather information, and quickly take down enemies that are usually much stronger than himself. That's the ninja aspect. But he can't kill anyone, meaning sometimes instant and quick is just impossible, so he needs to build up his own raw power and physical constitution, making sure he can keep fighting even when battered and bloodied and never actually let his guard slip. There's the samurai part. Both contribute throwing your maximum power into the first punch to finish the fight before it starts. Samurai honor with ninja improvisation. Samurai bulk with ninja stealth. He's legitimately just taken the best aspects of both.

Jaxson Zitting, on top of all that, he has made it clear he prefers to stay secretive, and the lack of a secret identity is useless in a society structured that way and you dont need one if you're not well known (remember the student reactions to him? "who is that" "I THINK its..."). it was also stated that his visor/goggles whatever you prefer to call it was meant for mind games, so his opponent cant tell when his quirk is active or not without testing it and partially covering his group combat weakness. Everything about the character so far other than the fact that he is willing to teach at a school with no secrecy clause for students and teachers (that has been revealed) and is usually the center of media attention, has screamed ninja to me.

Come to think of it, in Batman: The Animated Series, there were two episodes that kinda focused on this sort of thing. The first was called "Nigh of the Ninja" in which the villain was an old classmate of Bruce Wayne from when he went through martial arts training in Japan. The second was called "Day of the Samurai" in which the aforementioned villain returns looking to settle the score once and for all. At the end of the second, Bruce Wayne's old sensei states that Batman may fight like a ninja, but, "has the soul of a samurai." Feel free to check it out, but it's kinda tough to find a legit streaming service that has it.

He had a wrist-mounted Batarang launcher that he used as one once or twice I think. He also used the classic grappling gun when he went out with nothing but the old utility belt to get his suit back. At least, I think both of those things happened, it's been years and it's not easy to find all the episodes of DCAU Shows. I know he he's used a grappling cable before, though.

@Gaijin Goombah Media I wish you would have talked a bit more about comics batman because the utilization of others is a huge element of Batman in the more modern comics with the current detective comics and the Snyder mini series gates of Gotham both showing his usage of allies for further use. And they also both involve possibly the most ninja-like member of the Batfamily Cassandra Cain an expert in combat who both does a really good job with secret identities, figuring out who people are by viewing body language and has fought in a more ninja style then batman on occasion.

Well who says someone can't be both a samurai AND a ninja? As I understand, a ninja isn't just a title or role, but rather a dedicated practitioner of ninjustu and abides by its principles. Could a samurai who understands and is skilled in ninja arts not be considered a ninja as well? Having other skills shouldn't take away from one's qualifications. The traditional identity just seems like a romanticized variation on reality

Yeh. But generally people tend to forget that all those stereotypical ninjas and samurai-like ones were a Lin Kuei aka "Chinese ninja". They were Buddhist sect what come through Korea in pre-Songoku era with the immigrants and live in mountains (Tengu myths are related to them). Over time they fuse with local population leading to creations of not only shinobi but also samurai! Original samurai were elite archers, but with introduction of guns they start using swords adopting many Lin Kuei techniques. Generally all those shows with ninja as sword-masters take place before feudal era. PS: Fun fact. Nowadays Lin Kuei reside in United Stares. So yeh.. American ninja are real :D
@eagle162
@eagle162 6 жыл бұрын
TheRezro that's just a myth In the 60's the ninja boom started and after the topic of ninja started to become more and more popular there suddenly came up claims about "Lin kuei" or "Lin lung" in China and "Sulsa" in Korean, there is no evidence such a thing existed ever
@TheRezro
@TheRezro 6 жыл бұрын
@Kevin Gonzalez Which part? Even if there are no direct proves for existence of Link Kuei, sources mentioning similar group in that period are quite consistent and numerous. Also American Ninja were well informed about subject way before even research and reconstruction become popular. Before someone say something, current master was adopted as a child by previous one, so it is a legit Ninja school what has distinctive differences with Shinobi (like use of swords). Plus they don't brag about it. Obviously like in Japan modern Ninja schools don't do Ninja stuff anymore (excluding traditional body guards and some zaibatsu traditions). They exist mostly as reconstruction groups. American Ninja also advise Hollywood, so that is why movie depictions were in fact decent if you know the context. Anyway even if that isn't a 100% fact, it is probably more than a myth. Or you ar one of those people who deny everything despite arguments? I just asking.
@eagle162
@eagle162 6 жыл бұрын
TheRezro those "sources" are nothing more than folktales you have those in Japan all the time it gets mixed up with real history There are no legit ninja schools no school has proven their legit, lots of "ninja" manuals are really just repurpose Samurai manuals there really is no such thing as a ninja schools anyway just Samurai schools with ninjutsu as ninja as job title not a specific thing and most were Samurai What American Ninjas are you even talking about in your first comment

- to say B'man is not a "traditional" ninja to say the least nor does he serve as slave to a specific (and specifically secular) singular human master or government for that matter. yet still, He serves the greater good & people collectively and extensively uses much techniques. He by no means is a classical nor "Traditional" ninja nor properly would it be to call him Samurai as he though warrior is no servant slave for hire of specific lords of title or a solitary government. Bats does though as said use a lot of ninja teachings when he isn't going in for the attack, and just as much so while going in for it so while by the same having many 'Samurai esk traits. *namely that of loyalty to a code & coat of arms, minus the master/paid slave dynamic. Kinda going back to the "Not-Samurai JACK" video(s). ;''3

Btw What about his sleeping routine? He uses the überman sleeping schedule, as I know, which constist of 3 hours of sleep a day divided into 15 min naps. That would be optional for a ninja so there won't be a longer period of time when they're vulnerable. Also, I recall something from The Brave and The Bold. You know that episode when he's partnered up with Deadman as a ghost because he's burried alive, and he uses a technique to slow his breathing and leave his body, so he can get help. The first part of that seems pretty legit.

Love Gaijin's videos, but sometimes I think that he relies a bit too much on folklore, rather than actual history. Some of the "techniques" he shows seem highly implausible, or at best is the sort of thing that one person maybe did one time and yet is presented as a major technique. I admit, most of my studies revolve around European medieval, renaissance, and migration era weapons, armor, and techniques, but there's a decent bit of overlap and I've seen a lot of discussion about the sort of "ninja techniques" that Gaijin seems to take for granted. For example, since the primary purpose of a Ninja is to gather intelligence and spy on your lord's enemies, it is highly unlikely that they would have had a specific set of tools that are unique to the Ninja profession (especially something as out of place as a grappling hook) because if their tools were ever discovered, it would immediately reveal their status as Ninja. Similarly, there is no historical evidence of the "ninja-specific" Ninjato sword. No examples have ever been found to my knowledge and the name seems to be a relatively modern invention. Again, having a sword that only Ninjas use would be a very bad idea as anyone caught in the possession of one would be under heavy suspicion. Same with the blue ninja garb. While it is possible that such outfits could have been used on extremely rare occasions, and yes blue would be much more likely in that time period than black (although grey or green would be even more likely, as blue die was extremely expensive and hard to come by back then), it is highly unlikely that such outfits would be common practice, for all the reasons I've already stated. While a lot of these ideas seem to be much closer to the truth than American Hollywood or Anime Ninjas, with their ridiculous feats that border on mystical and who can kill 20 men in seconds, a lot of them are likely just as fictitious. The kind of legends pushed by the Japanese government during WWII as a way to create patriotism and inspire the populace. I'm not saying that Gaijin is 100% wrong, or that he is misleading, just that a lot of the things I've heard him talk about in his Ninja series especially is sort of unsubstantiated. And maybe Gaijin has taken some of these legends at face value when he should be a bit more skeptical. A lot of things about American history taught in American schools and museums are wrong or misleading (sometimes categorically wrong), and I suspect that the same is true in Japan.

Personally, I still think the old costume made more sense. I mean, part of that's just because I like it better - the new costume is reflective of the character's trend toward unnecessary grim-dark - but I also think the brighter blue and yellow color scheme do better at blending into a modern urban environment than the darker black and grey. Cities are often more light than shadow, after all, so it actually makes a fair amount of sense to incorporate bright colors into his costume.

I'd like to remind something about Batman's brawls scenes from Arkham: those are VERY catastrophic nights. He's trapped with the inmates overrunning the place in every game. On an average night, when the largest group he's likely to encounter is 4-5 street thugs in an alleyway, he's probably more likely to stealth throughout his whole patrols. Thing is, we scarcely see THOSE nights, because they're basically Batman's equivalent of uneventful. It would make a pretty boring story.
