Some seem to think the God we read about in the Old Testament behaves differently than he does in the New. Today we are asking the question, is God a vindictive bully as famous atheist Richard Dawkins has stated? In todays epsiode, Dr. Paul Copan joins the podcast to talk through difficult Old Testament passages such as 2 Kings 2:23-35 where 42 young men are mauled by bears after calling Elisha “Baldhead.” We also touch on the Canaanite Conquest, and the Old Testament law codes concerning rape and adultery.

I thought God was very strict and always angry in the OT. However, when I read the OT as an adult a shift happened. From the VERY beginning God's love and grace shines through. When Adam and Eve sinned, God punished them, but He also made them better clothes. When Israel sinned, God punished them, but also helped them. It's not about God being angry all the time, it's about Israel sinning all the time and God forgiving them over and over and over. I mean Israel had no excuse. They lived under His cloud and fire column and still doubted and sinned. I think it's difficult to read through the whole OT and not see God constantly forgiving. So I assume people who think Him angry etc hasn't actually read the whole OT.

Also, even in Christ's earthly ministry, He indicates how he will rightly judge those rebels who do not want Him to Reign over them at His Return: "But those mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me."- Luke 19:27 KJV

A productive conversation. Thanks. That comment about something being a metaphor doesn't negate it's impact flicked a switch. If i said "it's raining cats and dogs" (a phrase common to the UK, though obviously not literal it still makes it quite clear that it was a heavy downpour. It seems to me those people are choosing to ignore normal grammatical rules whenever they find text that they don't like.

I wonder, Alisha, if you can answer or ask one of your interviewees to answer what the difference between a curse and a punishment is. Because he calls the punishments of say Rape or adultery I.e. stoning or death as just threats but not exactly to be carried out and then these curses that God pronounced on Israel for disobedience towards him are not threats, but a foretelling of what actually will happen……?

Do any of you ever wonder why God didn't make this stuff more clear to us? There are so many ways that the broader text contradicts itself. It seems God is not clear or He wants to create a tension and force us to figure it out to some degree.

Do you have any evidence that it was unclear to the original readers? I don't see it as a matter of God trying to force us to figure out apparent contradictions. I see it as a result of the differences in expressions from culture to culture and because of how various languages use words.
@object1ion

Yes I've wondered that a lot. Maybe the purpose is for us to get to the point where we say Lord I just dont understand, give me a Spirit of understanding. Its made me realize we can't rely on pastors and other fellow humans to reveal the truth. Only the Spirit of Truth (as revealed by Christ) can reveal it. The point of "the revelation of Jesus Christ" is to show the TRUE Image of God, so I use that as a veil for the whole Bible. Unto US it was given, unto THEM it was not... So anyone who says to ignore that dreadful feeling you get when you read the OT is leading you astray from Christ's revelation.

God is full of Mercy and Grace even from the beginning with Adam and Eve, Cain, Noah and family, Abraham, Sarah, Issac, Jacob and sons, Moses, Isreal, Joshua, Jonah, Ninavah, David, etc…, and Jesus doubles down on what is sin when he condemns everyone with the Sermon on the Mount. He says Adultery is not just outward but inward, Murder is not just a physical act but a spiritual one of hatred even as simple as calling someone a fool, and he doesn’t give permission to divorce like Moses did but because of the hardness of our hearts. We are all condemned by his words, as all men are judged guilty of sin and death by Christ Jesus. We can see the Fullness of God, the Fullness of His Spirit on the Cross. We see his wrath, his judgment, his hatred for sin poured out upon Christ. This is a both warning and a call. Those who reject the Goodness of God in Christ who suffered and died for our sin will suffer the wrath of God for eternity. But we also see the Grace, Mercy, Forgiveness, Kindness, Faithfulness and Love of God in Christ’s suffering and death upon the Cross. We see the Fullness of God poured out upon the Cross. Through the Cross we receive the Spirit of God in Full. We see God in Fullness in Christ. We see the Fullness of his Love and Goodness in Christ. If we like the Jews Reject Christ we are rejecting the Goodness of God and will are left with his Wrath.

Puzzling sidenote question: Why doesn't the Holy Spirit say anything? As in: any commandment or direct instruction or admonishment? Has he? Where? What? Jesus said: if you love me, keep my commandments. And didn't God ever speak to Moses? and tell Abraham to go "to a land that I shall show thee". But-- what has the Holy Spirit ever come out and said? Why the silence? Am I mistaken? This is puzzling.

God was directly involved with the Jews. The Holy Spirit came after Jesus was resurrected. However, if you have read the entire Bible, you'll see the Holy Spirit at work. We were made in God's image and his laws were written on our hearts. You can either ignore it or apply it. When it cones to sin, you often have that battle within you about what is wrong and right. That voice urging you to do what is right, is the Holy Spirit.

Law originally is designed for the Judgment of both angels and humans. However since Adam being kicked out of heaven/Eden, humans are no longer living inside God's dwelling realm. Law now is only seen by angels but not demonstratable to humans. OT is for God to demonstrate through Israel how strict God's Law could mean, such that later humans can understand what God's Grace through Jesus Christ could mean. That's why in OT God appears to be harsh to His people Israel. God is harsh such that the incapable humans can bring forward His message of salvation across history by means of Israel's loyalty and dedication.

Let me explain what no Christian today understands! The Old Testament is an allegory says Paul! When it is read to this day there is a veil! It is a story of the human experience of the mind! That is the true meaning of the text! The New Testament reveals that through Jesus who also is the explanation of the allegory through parables to reveal that everything is within you! He says the kingdom is within you! What kingdom? What the Old Testament was about! The promised land inside you! That’s why God does not kill babies. The children are the concepts ( conceptions) of the mind. They must be killed. The men and women are the thoughts and emotions that fornicate in your head and produce these lies and cities within your head that war and cause suffering! Every word means something! Jerusalem means teaching of peace. Gomorrah means burning! The Jordan means descender! Galilee means circuit! Moses means drawn out! Jacob means God prevails. Mary means their rebellion! It’s all a story within a story that is hidden from the carnal mind! Because the carnal mind cannot understand. Let me be clear here for you! Gods name, ( nature) is I AM! When Jesus says I AM the way the truth the life he’s not talking about himself he’s saying THE I AM is the way....... the truth... the life!!! The Christ within is the I AM! In everyone! That is Gods salvation is the word Jesus which means that is the Christ within ALL saying the I AM in you is God! Not the carnal mind self you created but the I AM conciousness witnessing everything! The fake self you think you are is not you but an illusion hence Satan the accuser, your adversary, that must be thrown down, deny yourself, the made up self!

With all due respect to some of the commenters, most of the people that take issue with this are those who have not even read the Bible, had no discipleship and have not gone to any clergy to ask questions, they just pick and choose verses and make asdumptions. I think the hang up here is the tone of each book. For example: OT- Adultery = Laws of Moses says, stone her to death. NT- He who is without sin cast the first stone. Also, the woman at the well. NT- "I do not condemn you". OT- Stone her! OT- Men had several wives, committing adultery, yet a woman did not and was the only one in that covenant (between husband and wife) who had to remain faithful or be stoned to death. NT- Jesus often talked about adultery of both males and females and held men accou table, if the wife remarried or the man she remarries. A little odd still, but at least there was some accountabilty as oppsed to none in the OT. OT- An eye for an eye NT- Turn the other cheek; love your enemies. See what I mean? As for me, I understand the differences and why many laws and commands were made. We have to remember, the Jews were suppose to be different, set a part, God's Chosen people to bring the gospel to the world, and they had direct access to God who is Holy and He walked, protected, and sanctified them, (well He tried), but they were rebellious. In addition, the OT dealt and focused primarily on the Jewish plight; whereas, the NT was the ending of the Jewish plight up to their Messiah, then its opened to all the Gentiles, which did not have the teachings, laws, and traditions of those the Jews had to adhere to. Entire generations were being trained and the Gentiles were closed off from that according to what we know through the OT

@@reality1958 That is a good observation, but it's about people and how they see God, not how God actually is. We all have guilt. We have an inner voice, some call it the ego, that tells us if we suffer, we can get rid of our guilt. It's been virgins thrown into volcanoes to please the gods in the past. But we each take on the self-sacrifice, too. Accidents. diseases, emotional upset, marriage break ups, on and on. The Bible is set up on that from animal sacrifices in the Old Testament, that book also prophesies that Jesus will do it for us to end all sacrifice. People don't realize it doesn't work, but Jesus had to go through it for people to realize it doesn't work. They still self-sacrifice. He even told us what the solution was when he was on the cross. "Forgive them for they know not what they do." Forgiveness returns us all back to our innocence.

Sometimes the simplest explanation is True. The Hebrews wrote in Hebrew, the romans wrote in greek. The so called modern scholars, like to say Mark was written first. Because it is the least flattering. Under this assumption any degraded document would be called first/original. What they don't say is why don't mark mention a resurrection? He didn't believe it? or he didn't think it was important? or was it that it was written by a roman stooge to destroy the message of The Messiah? In Matthew and Luke the genealogies are a contradiction. Matthew said the woman held Him by the feet and worshipped Him. Luke says that Jesus said, don't touch me for I have not ascended to My Father. Spaul contradicts all the other 40 Inspired Books including Matthew. Old Testament so called "contradictions" are few and can be easily explained with proper translation. In the "New Testament", there are many irreconcilable differences. Because only Matthew was originally written in Hebrew. "Matthew" was written anomalously/untitled. It is The Testament of Messiah the last Inspired book. The roman/greek books that fallow are roman lies, propaganda and contradictions. Wake up brothers and sisters, God didn't start speaking greek after they killed His Son. Rome is the beast of Daniel 7 that was given power over the saints for a season. Wake up the Brothers and Sister, He is coming soon.

Father forgive them. The details need to be paid attention to. People who write fraudulent works leave out details. From what I understand detail can help to prove the authenticity of scripture. Jesus cried out loud something while on the cross in Matthew and Mark but in Luke it is Luke.23 [34] Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots. Acts 7 [51] Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye. [52] Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? and they have slain them which shewed before of the coming of the Just One; of whom ye have been now the betrayers and murderers: [53] Who have received the law by the disposition of angels, and have not kept it. [54] When they heard these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed on him with their teeth. [55] But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God, [56] And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God. [57] Then they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and ran upon him with one accord, [58] And cast him out of the city, and stoned him: and the witnesses laid down their clothes at a young man's feet, whose name was Saul. [59] And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit. [60] And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep. Similar to what Jesus cried from the cross. Forgive them. They did the unforgivable sin, Mk 3:29 1 Tim. 1 [12] And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry; [13] Who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief. Without Luke .23 [34] Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do and Acts 7 [59] And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit. [60] And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep.

No God is not a bully, nor should he taken lightly. The OT has many hidden gems God changed Jacobs name twice from Jacob to Israel. Therefore confirming he is Israel Genesis 32 27/29 27 Then the man asked, “What is your name? Jacob,” he answered. 28 The man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob. You have wrestled with God and with men, and you have won. That’s why your name will be Israel. Now that Jacob had returned from Paddan-aram, God appeared to him again at Bethel. God blessed him, saying, "Your name is Jacob, but you will not be called Jacob any longer. From now on your name will be Israel." So God renamed him Israel. (Genesis 35:9-10, NLT ). Isaiah 44 1 "But now listen, O Jacob, my servant, Israel, whom I have chosen. 2 This is what the LORD says-- he who made you, who formed you in the womb, and who will help you: Do not be afraid, O Jacob, my servant, Jeshurun, whom I have chosen. 3 For I will pour water on the thirsty land, and streams on the dry ground; I will pour out my Spirit on your offspring, and my blessing on your descendants. 4 They will spring up like grass in a meadow, like poplar trees by flowing streams. 5 One will say, `I belong to the LORD'; another will call himself by the name of Jacob; still another will write on his hand, `The LORD's,' and will take the name Israel. 6 "This is what the LORD says-- Israel's King and Redeemer, the LORD Almighty: I am the first and I am the last; apart from me there is no God. 7 Who then is like me? Let him proclaim it. Let him declare and lay out before me what has happened since I established my ancient people, and what is yet to come-- yes, let him foretell what will come. Psalm 40, love this psalm, so many hidden treasures, like verse7. Psalm 40 For the director of music. Of David. A psalm. 1 I waited patiently for the LORD; he turned to me and heard my cry. 2 He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. 3 He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear and put their trust in the LORD. 4 Blessed is the man who makes the LORD his trust, who does not look to the proud, to those who turn aside to false gods. [1] 5 Many, O LORD my God, are the wonders you have done. The things you planned for us no one can recount to you; were I to speak and tell of them, they would be too many to declare. 6 Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but my ears you have pierced [2] [3] ; burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not require. 7 Then I said, "Here I am, I have come-- it is written about me in the scroll. [4] 8 I desire to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart." 9 I proclaim righteousness in the great assembly; I do not seal my lips, as you know, O LORD. 10 I do not hide your righteousness in my heart; I speak of your faithfulness and salvation. I do not conceal your love and your truth from the great assembly. 11 Do not withhold your mercy from me, O LORD; may your love and your truth always protect me. 12 For troubles without number surround me; my sins have overtaken me, and I cannot see. They are more than the hairs of my head, and my heart fails within me. 13 Be pleased, O LORD, to save me; O LORD, come quickly to help me. 14 May all who seek to take my life be put to shame and confusion; may all who desire my ruin be turned back in disgrace. 15 May those who say to me, "Aha! Aha!" be appalled at their own shame. 16 But may all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you; may those who love your salvation always say, "The LORD be exalted!" 17 Yet I am poor and needy; may the Lord think of me. You are my help and my deliverer; O my God, do not delay. Psalm 118 v17. I shall not die, but I shall live, and recount the deeds of the LORD. Love this ❤️.

Yes! Eph.2 [12] That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world: That is prior to Paul who is God's chosen vessel to educate us regarding God's grace as a free gift based solely on faith. Faith in Paul's gospel. Not the grace in the law that allowed remission of sin which is a conditional forgiveness requiring good deeds and staying faithful until death or if alive at the tribulation enduring until the end. Grace for those going thru the tribulation is that God will shelter them. Pss.91 [1] He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. [2] I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. [3] Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. [4] He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler. Matt.23 [37] O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not! [38] Behold, your house is left unto you desolate. [39] For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.

It is not surprising that there are people in their right mind who affirm that the God of the Hebrew Bible and the God of the New Testament are the same being, since their comparison is an exercise in analysis and literary commentary on texts. Nominally, they are the same God: the God of Jewish monotheism. In the Hebrew Bible Yahweh is the main character, the most important character by far from those who appear in the OT; in the NT, the Judeo-Christian God becomes a very secondary, very minor character. He couldn't even be considered a supporting character; he is practically missing from all accounts. On the other hand, in the Hebrew Bible the Son does not exist. Only by forcing certain sayings and events a lot, and with a lot of fantasy and imagination, it is possible to insinuate that there are references--not even implicitly--to the second person of the Trinity, to the Son of Man and Son of God. The NT narrates some of the sayings and facts that are attributed to Jesus, who as a good monotheistic Jew, believed in Yahweh as his God and that of the Jewish people. On the other hand, the hypostatic union in Jesus is hardly hinted at in the NT (especially in the Gospel of John). The ambiguity when scrutinizing the nature (essence) of Jesus and how he could be related to the supposed divine substance is evident and unquestionable. The most logical and rational interpretation of the entities considered and called God, both in the Old Testament and in the New, is that the God of the Hebrew Bible is described in great detail, while in the NT nothing is added about nature (essence). ) of the literary character named Yahweh.

Interesting! Also the early Christian theologian Marcion came to the conclusion - from studying the OT scriptures - that Yahweh was evil, because clearly in the Hebrew texts he does evil or permits evil (commands the genocide of the Amalekites, negotiates with Satan over the fate of Job and his loved ones, sends plague upon the Egyptian first born and so on) - all contradictions of the “good”….

Christianity stole Judaism for it's foundation, and then the very first book(Matthew) "replaced" Yahweh for Jesus. "Replaced" being, ideologically and not literally. Hence " “I am the way and the truth and the life. *No* *one* comes to the Father except through me(Jesus)." OT God = I have a select group who are mine and if you go against me you will DIE in this lifetime. NT Jesus = Everyone can be in the ingroup but if you don't believe I will TORTURE you forever in the afterlife. Any PERFECT ETERNAL being, who is without flaws simply by it's very "nature"... and infinite in knowledge, wisdom and POWER, cannot, I repeat cannot, be considered _just_ ... in judging ANY severely less and fallible and finite creatures, especially creatures IT created. WITH full knowledge no less(omniscience).

The sooner people realize that Moses projected his own anger onto his idea of who God is and what God said, the sooner people will get over their fear of God and through forgiveness, change it to love. God didn't tell Moses He wanted people stoned for adultery or any other error. God is our Teacher as the Holy Spirit, not a punisher. "There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love." It's not only in the Old Testament, it has also crept into the New Testament and quotes attributed to Jesus. Either love is patient and God is love or love hasn't patience and includes hell and punishment. “Don't be afraid of those who want to kill your body; they cannot touch your soul. Fear only God, who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

You either fear God and follow his moral law out of not wanting to be punished or you follow his moral law because you know, you see that it is right. In which case God's love shines through his law. Also consider how fear means not only a feeling of terror/anxiety but also a feeling of awe at meeting the supernatural, which has an element of terror for us. So if Moses projected something on God - and what makes you think you are not projecting your own stuff on God?

So basically you’re saying that the OT writings of the Mosaic Law are incorrect and in error? If that is true, how can we be sure that the rest of scripture hasn’t been tainted and ruined by sinful man? Scripture is God breathed and without error, but that can’t be true if you believe the OT is riddled with human error where writers added their own ideas into the text outside of God’s plan. The way scripture is set up, it supports and affirms itself. If some scripture is inaccurate and full of error, then we can’t trust any of it.

To support what Alisha said about the tone of the OT in terms of the warrior era and the writers of the OT, can also be seen in Paul's books. When he was in prison, his tone was very sad. As a survivor, I disagree 100% with you when it comes to the treatment of women. They were property and a commodity for fathers in the OT. The story of DINAH is a big example of rape and Jacob wanting her to marry him so he would gain wealth. Men's approach to this, like your guest, is just ridiculous and he is devaluing the plight of women in OT times. You always have inaccurate excuses like Jacob, David and the Levite if the unknown woman, you try and sweep it under the rug or minimize it. The only thing you gain by that is turning victims away from God, revictimizing women, and devaluing them like their own fathers did in the OT. As a result in the OT, people died, women were treated harsher, the victim was devalued futher by their fathers. The ones who did care were either killed or cursed i.e., Absolom and Jacobs sons. Instead, you need to point out what God did do as a result of these men's actions or inaction, along with the customs of women having no right to inheritance, societal values, and less monitary value, etc. MEN WERE NOT HELD ACCOUNTABLE IN THE OT. ONLY MONITARILY RECOMPENSE TO THE FATHER, NOT THE VICTIM LIKE YOU WOULD FOR PROPERTY! When are you men going to acknowledge the treatment of women? Then you get upset over the femnazi movement, yet its because of people like you Paul who try and minimize it all and those who cannot recognize women's sufferage in the OT. Yes, I am leaving angry!

This man is preaching a divided Kingdom, a double minded God... instead of RIGHTLY dividing the Word and dividing our Father (who IS LIGHT), with the god of this world (Satan).. Christ is the absolute revelation of God, and the image of God, because NO ONE had the TRUE image of Him. "ALL that ever came before me are thieves and robbers: but the sheep did not hear them." If you do not use HIM as your veil through the OT you will be LOST in an unfamiliar, dark spirit. Do not let pastors deceive you into believing in a wrathful, DARK spirit of God - for GOD is light, and in HIM there is no darkness at all. WITHOUT Him is darkness, therefore the DARKNESS does NOT come FROM HIM, it comes from being separated from Him. These people are perverting the Image of God and creating a spirit of wrath and fear for you to cling to. They blasphemy God by confusing Him with the god of this world (satan, the prince of this world, the prince of darkness and wrath).
