Dumb question. How do you guys determine engine temp on a twin cam? I'm thinking you use a handheld infrared reader? Do you take multiple readings around the block, cylinders, heads etc.? Thanks again for another excellent video!
@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed. Not a dumb question at all, and it is very important to do it right to get useful information. We measure temperatures a variety of ways. Oil Temperature with a dipstick temp gauge. The most reliable for the metal of the engine is the ET readout on a Power Vision. This is the same number that the ECU uses to adjust timing and fuel. Therefore, this is the best way to get reliable, useful information. Also, to be noted, the ET reading on a Sportster, Twin Cam & M8 are all different, since the sensor is in a different place on each of these different types of engines. We also use an infrared gun on the cylinders, near the spark plugs. This is easy to do inaccurately. Different distances and angles of the gun will give very different readings. So it is important to have a way to keep your gun at the exact same distance and angle each time, or there can be no apples to apples comparisons.

Thanks man. Yeah, prolly the reason is that so many would fail that Harley does NOT encourage them to be done...it would decrease their profit due to an increase in warranty work.

I'm kicking myself after watching this video. I had a seven-year warranty on my 2013 TC103 that expired in May of this year. I had 125,000 miles on my engine and as you stated probably would have failed the leak down test. Oh well, live and learn. I now have 136,000 and will have the test done at the end of my riding season. 😫

a good tune, will cool down any twin cam, never had an issue on mine !!
@DKCustomProducts

That is true. A good tune will typically give a 10-15 degree drop. However, most TC's since 2007, are starting out around 300 degree's, and a 10-15 degree drop is not enough for them.

@@fxrmike5145 Thanks for the good words, glad you are enjoying the videos and finding them useful. Richening up the tune will make it run smoother and stronger. The main reason for you loss of low and mid range torque is the reversion that is occurring in the exhaust now that you have the 2.5" open slip ons. I took my 2018 Sport Glide, 107" M8, with just over 16K miles in for the leak down test you talk about. The results? Ft cylinder has a 12% loss, and the rear cylinder shows 14%. I have been bitching about a 'seat of the pants' feel that the bike was not as crisp with throttle response for a couple of months, and until I paid for the leak down test, nobody was interested. "That's just how M8's are" was a standard answer, now the ledged technicians are telling me that the M8 is so loose inside, that the loss is likely in ring end gap, that they were set up much looser than the Twin Cam, and I should just ride it. This is from a dealer... Good thing I'm out of warranty, so I don't have to go back again. What a load of s**t . I have a Jim's Force Flow fan on order, and if the things ever come off backorder, it will be on my bike toot sweet. Thanks for the information, you guys are appreciated.

@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts 2 жыл бұрын
It has to be under warranty...so if you are still under warranty, then you go to the Service Manual for your bike and find where it talks about the acceptable level on a Leak Down Test...up to 10% is acceptable, above that is not.

@@robertross4274 Good deal on the warranty. Sometimes dealerships will not want to do a leak down test. What I tell them is that I will pay for the leak down test, UNLESS it fails. If it fails, they pay for the test AND for fixing the problem. Glad you're finding the videos helpful.

Have you tried the harley cool flow fan? Looks like a good investment
@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts 2 жыл бұрын
Yes. As stated in the Harley description of that product.... It does not cool the engine down at all. It does reduce the amount of heat that the rider and passenger feel at a stop and very slow speeds. We are more interested in actually cooling the engine down. That is better for the engine performance and longevity...and if it is cooler, the rider and passenger will be cooler.
@jimmin9802
@jimmin9802 2 жыл бұрын
I agree with you on wanting to cool the motor but this fan is in an area where you recommend removing the left side leg guard for heat to have a place to dissipate , if that fan is pulling then the heat will be forced out and in turn the cylinder will run cooler as air is pulled in from the outside.
@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts 2 жыл бұрын
@@jimmin9802 You may be correct. Harley does not believe the Coolflow reduces engine temps at all...but maybe it would if the left side thigh protector was removed.

Would the Harley extended service plan cover that? My 2016 FXDLS is at 9000mi and I'm noticing a little bit of oil coming from between the rocker box and cover on the rear. I bought it used from harley just a few months ago
@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts 4 жыл бұрын
It is not that unusual to have a rocker box cover seepage. If re-torquing the cover bolts does not stop it, you may need new gaskets. Rocker box seepage is not necessarily an indicator of the bike having a problem that would show up in a leak-down test. Yes, a Harley Extended Warranty should cover repairs needed if the leak down test is more than 10%....however, they will look to see if there are things you have done (or the previous owner) to the bike that caused it to run hot. They will also look to make sure that all maintenance was done properly.

@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts 4 жыл бұрын
Herb, I am sorry, I do not remember what year and model Harley you have. The target ET is different for different engines. We are going to be covering all the details of the ideal and target temps in part #5 of this series. For a Twin Cam, the target for everyday riding is an ET of no more than 230, and for extreme situations (like 70-90 mph up a steep grade in 85+ degree temps) never over 250.

DKCustomProducts looking forward to the rest of the series. I also have your catch can. Not sure how many degrees that’s good for. Did a saddle sore last Saturday. I emptied it prior to the ride. Not a lot inside after, but enough oil and water to justify the external breather.
@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts 4 жыл бұрын
@@h3r63rt Catch-Can might be good for a few degrees today...it is more for preventing carbon build-up on your pistons that will save 10-20 degrees (along with other issues) many miles down the road.
