I run either Mobil1, Amsoil or Red Line. They're all great oils and as long as you change your oil every 5,000 miles, you won't have problems with those oils. All three make the valve train run quieter for sure.

I recently learned that while Harley says Syn 3 in all 3 holes, you actually need a heavier Gear oil in the transmission. This is especially true if you suffer dreaded "5th Gear Whine". I agree that the Stealership is not necessarily your best source of maintenance information, since they would prefer you just buy a new bike every year.

While it is not necessary to run gear oil in the trans, most find it shifts better and quieter when you do. Here is a video of me trying out the new HD gear oil...I am liking it...it seems to be right up there with redline. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Z7OcaquBmdCsm3k.html

A transmission doesn’t need a SAE 85W-140 oil. Even high torque class 8 truck manual transmissions rated at 1850 lbft torque are using 50W synthetic. If you are running that heavy, high torque axle gearbox oil in your little 110 lbft motorcycle tranny you are just creating more friction drag and putting less power to the wheel.

I use Amsoil now. I’m always impressed by the results from switching from something I’m using to Amsoil. I have researched oil analysis reports and test after test on all the oils and it seems like nothing beats Amsoil. I run their 20w-50 in the motor and their Primary fluid in my primary. Felt like I put a performance transmission in after adding it. Amsoil has a CF rating too that no one pays attention to and that’s very important.

I use syn 3 in my 2003 softail and 2012 sportster engines. Very happy with it. A few years ago I started using synthetic 3 in my primary in my softail and like you I noticed a big difference. The clutch operation was much smoother. I couldn't believe it. In the transmission I switched to red line years ago and I am sold on it. I tried syn 3 years ago in the transmission and I didn't like it. I started using the 80/140 in my sportster transmission/primary and I like it better than the standard oil that harley has.

Hey guys, just subscribed today because I'm going to switch over to external breather. I've run Syn 3 when my 2012 FLHTK was under warranty. I switched to Mobile1 20-50 in all 3 holes, had top end clatter. Switched to Amsoil with no problem. Tried RedLine, loved the ShockProof in the trans. When I used RL Primary Fluid I experienced an awful noise like the compensator was trash. I drained and install Amsoil 20-50 and the noise went away, get this while draining the RL my garage smelled like I took a poop. Maybe bad oil. I'm back with Amsoil, but staying with Shockproof in the trans. I'm going Spectro in all holes next. Just my $.02...

Not my first bike, but my first Harley. I just did the 1000 mile service myself on a 2021 Road Glide. I used the HD heavy gear oil in the transmission, Formula + in the primary and Mobil 1 20w-50 in the crank case. I can tell you the trans is like butter. The shifts are smooth and no noise. I read a lot of the internet Oil Guru's opinions before making those decisions.

I think Kevin is right, the key is decent oil from one of several brands changed on time. Because of DK's comments on oil temps even in twin cooled like mine (my M8 can hit 254 deg F on super hot days), I'm with Amsoil engine, Amsoil Trans, Amsoil Primary. The latter two are specific formulations and work fine. Amsoil has been shown to stand up to high temps (at least for a while). I don't trust Harley's smaller or different oil pump on the twin cooled vs regular M8 to install an oil cooler, so I'm just going to change to the reusable higher flow filter for now (just post warranty on my bike). At 4000 oil miles plus, the top end start up clatter seems more pronounced even with Amsoil. I always change at or before 5 k miles. I use HD Lucas Stabilizer at 20% engine only and that quiets the engine clatter at startup dramatically due, most likely, to film coating. Red Line's high moly formulation does the same. I have the oil test kit and will test at next change.

Been running Syn 3 since 2002. Bike has served me well thus far. I have about 64000 miles on the bike. In 2015 when I worked at a dealership I had them change my pushrods from quick connect to solid. I run Amsoil because of the independent testing, and they seem to focus on the application for each of their different oils. Weekend warrior here. Use the Mobile 1 oils in the engine and primary with one caveat that I add Lucas additive to the engine. Since it sits all week and sometimes two, the lucas helps keep the top lubricated during start ups. For the transmission, use a Mobile gear oil as that seems to give me less clunkier shifts.

Just seeing this video so I’ll add this comment I seen a test between H-D Syn-3 oil versus Amsoil they did a spinning steel balls test in their oils and brought the temperature of the oil to highest extreme temperature. They showed at that temperature a engine would of exploded. So they shut down both testing machines inspected the steel balls for scuff marks. The steel balls in Harley oil showed strong visible scuff marks and the balls in Amsoil showed a faint scuff mark. Harley doesn’t make their oil, Amsoil does. That convinced me to go with Amsoil

Now running TriboDyn. I had been using Amsoil before my stage 2 and liked it very much. However, I noticed a temp increase after the swap, so I decided to give full-syn TriboDyn 20-50 V-twin m/c oil a try. Runs quieter and is about 6 degrees cooler than my Amsoil temps. An added bonus is increased fuel mileage at an average of 48+ mpg without hammering. BTW, keep your oil level about halfway on the dipstick as the service manul states for the best fuel mileage. TriboDyn has a unique blue color too. A University study showed that it outperformed all other oils, and I am now a believer. The price is about the same at $19.95 a quart. Hope this helps someone.

I do have the top end clatter the dealer did try redline with a a set of lifters. But I never found the noise to quiet. Those are just my thoughts. But what it comes down to is like you said as long as it’s lubricated with proper application.

Great video Kevin. I have an iron 883 2017. where I live it is difficult and very expensive to use specific oils for air-cooled motorcycles. If you can get the oils for "Japanese" motorcycles (motul, castrol, mobil, valvoline but nothing for v twin). They say that these oils cannot withstand the pressures and temperatures of our harleys. So what oil would you recommend using in this case? Oil for diesel as recommended in the manual in case of not getting the HD? Do you know what is the PACKAGE OF SPECIFIC ADDITIVES USED IN OILS FOR AIR-COOLED MOTORCYCLES? thanks. I wait for your help. Greetings.

I've used Castrol 20-50 and Valvoline VR1 20-50, both with good results. Just change a bit more frequently. One of the best things you can do for your oil is not let your engine get too hot. Here is a series we did on keeping the temps down. It is primarily about Twin Cams and M8's, but all the principles apply to Sportys also. We specifically address Sporty temps in the first few minutes of 5th video in the series- kzfaq.info/sun/PLb3bvZgbH92_3s-2vv63QggFJ3nteFd_C Also, can you not get deliveries from Amazon where you are? That is where I get most of my oil.

My nearest Harley dealer's 3 hours away so there oils out. But I can get Amsoil locally so I use there specific oil for each hole. I bought some Redline shock proof for the Trans but still leary on trying it. As a side note I run Mobil in everything else on the farm but when I contacted my supplier was informed Mobil 1 for motorcycles was no longer available in Canada.

I tried Amsoil full synthetic in my EVO motor and she did not like it. Seem like it had more power but idled rough and made a lot of noise. I was also concerned about the full synthetic causing some leaks further on down the road. It's great stuff in the newer bikes though just a message for those still riding the old iron horses!

Technically if you do an oil analysis the only time you would need to change the oil is when it says the oil is no good. Change the filter at recommended intervals based on riding though. That takes too much time for me though, I generally just change it between 4K and 7K running Amsoil with the EAo filters. Bike lives in the redline and has never had any issues. 60K on a 2010 Vrod

Thank you for the video very informative. I have a 2000 Sportster xlh 1200. I put mobile one in for a while to get better lubrication so I thought. The parts person told me I could do that but I'm going to have more valve noise I'm going to find more oil in the air cleaner which is exactly what happened. Since then I went to Bel Ray 20w 50 mineral oil. Much quieter. My question is, what do you think about oil coolers particularly, for this application? Thank you very much Robert
@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Robert. Thank you, glad you enjoyed the video. You experienced the same thing I have when using Mobil One. I believe it lubricates just fine, no worries there, but more top end noise is what I experienced also. I don't get any oil in my air cleaner because I use External Breather Systems. See video on that here- kzfaq.info/get/bejne/e8x0mKmLx9Kxk58.html Regarding oil coolers on a Sporty. Many do not need them, but some do. If your oil is running above 230* F, then I recommend an oil cooler. You can see a good selection at the following link. Also, if it is just running a bit hotter (no more than 260) then a 6 row will work. If hotter than that I would get a 10 row, and if lots of stop and go riding, then a 10 row with a fan. They can all be seen here- www.dkcustomproducts.com/sportster-c155.htm We have a video series that is primarily about Twin Cams and M8's, but all the principles are the same for a Sporty if it is running too hot. My dad and his dad were mechanics and have worked on every kind of motor, trany, and differentials that were on the road. I grew up hearing that a motor gets used to the oil that it's been getting. I'm 70+ yrs old and followed that advice with every vehicle I've owned, including my Harley. My current ride is a 2019 FLHR and I run HD full synthetic oil and will stay with that for as long as I ride it. I change it at the recommended interval and the cost is irrelevant. I got well over 100K on my last FLHR and was never disappointed with its performance.

You guys did a great, non opinionated video. Good advice. My feelings- just use a good quality branded oil and make your own judgement. All the brands you listed are fine. A good 20w50 engine oil or 75w140 in the Transmission and primary is fine. (Gear oil is measured differently so the numbers aren't apples to apples. 75w140 is about the viscosity of 20w50 engine oil.) I've used Mobil 1 gear oil in primaries and transmissions of my Harleys and Buells for 15 years. no issues. ATF is fine in Primary. I've even used Shell Rotella or Mobil 1 diesel oil in engine before. I use it in my Japanese single cylinders. Everything you said is good advice.

Years ago I had a bandit clutch in my hot rod bagger and had to run automotive ATF in the primary. If I used anything else the clutch would slip. I had my own shop for years and have probably ran everything and every combination. The biggest thing is synthetic vs fossil oil. Syn takes the heat up to 300 degrees and fossil 250 before they start to break down.

Amsoil (because I can’t find Mobil 1 V twin oil in Canada) in the engine. HD Formula + in the transmission and primary. Smart advice. Nice poster.

@@paulhorvath9784 probably is. I haven’t seen it at the dealership. I’ll be trying it next change if I can get some. (Footnote: the dealer is 450 miles away - I don’t go there often). I used synt 3 in the primary and trans once and didn’t like the stiff shifter feel. Could have been something else causing it.

@@DKCustomProducts All new bikes are delivered with sync 3 in all 3 holes, just saying. I use the formula + Primary and trans, Mobile 1 in the engine never an Issue. You did not cover frequency of oil change ? How long do you go before changing your fluids ?

I have 55K miles on a 2004 Fatboy that has had nothing but organic Rotella 20w50 in it since it's second oil change. It still runs and rides great. I used it because I always had it around for my 6.0 ford f250sd.

Where did you find Rotella 20w-50? I have never seen it listed on their website? I've used 15w-40 in vtwins before with no problems

Yes, as stated in the video, the best oil we have found for reducing/eliminating the tick is Red Line. To get rid of the ticking, the following two also help: 1. Run the correct weight oil for the ambient temps 2. Probably most important is to keep the engine and oil temps down in the optimum range. Max of 230 for the oil and 260 for the ET.
