People like to complain about kids these days - but who’s the one giving them the participation trophies? That’s right.

Not fair? I don't think that's what the problem is, here. If fat Tommy can't run, and therefor he gets no trophy, do you think this is unfair? What you should be teaching your kids, is that life isn't easy! That trophies, rewards and prizes come with hard work, with effort! And that only the best get them. Because if everybody would get them, regardless of what rank they finished at, then why the hell would anyone even bother to finish first anymore? Sure, participation should be encouraged. But fame and glory should remain only for those who score top rank!

Steve, I think this is the best video I've seen from you because I'm teacher and I can relate. So many parents seem to always want you to give their kids something for nothing. They're not realizing that their kid is only a teacher's problem for a couple of hours a day for 180 days but they'll be their parents' problem for the rest of their lives because they never taught their kids to work hard for anything or lose gracefully. I feel bad for the world.

I've been coaching for 12 years now and my observations have been more and more kids that respect me more than their parents over the years. They don't even care if you tell them I'm telling your parents anymore lol. I just need them to have basic human decency and respect by the time they get to me.

@@AEdavirgin Agreed! I know what you mean. Parents no longer discipline their kids nor do they encourage them to be better kids. What I've noticed is that what they're actually teaching their kids is to scheme and to try play the system. We've been told to make things so easy for them that they really don't even know what hard work is or how to behave like they have home training.

@@AEdavirgin This. It's at the point where I tell my parents that they really don't have to come chaperone. The parents are way too lenient and give their kids whatever they want just so they are keeping up with the Joneses. It's sad to say but if someone doesn't step in and make these kids realize that they have to work for what they want instead of having it handed to them our country is in for a world of hurt.

I have a 3 year old, he knows to get something he has to do certain things i.e take his plate to the sink after eating, he dusts all the snirting boards if the house, cleaning his toys etc. At the moment he wanted a fire engine toy but the toy is being held hostage till he learns to be reponsible for his other toys. He is trying and he asks everyday is it the way it should be. Mid December I will purchase the toy as he is trying but still is 3. As husband and wife we have discussed 4 mandatory things he will have to do whether he likes it or not, that is MMA, swimming and 2 languages. Rest are his choices. However, we will put him in different things so he can find out what he is good at or not but he can not quit because its hard. Life is hard

All my life I've been tall and athletic naturally. So many people wanted me to play sports. It never was my interest. I was always the artistic and nerdy type. I was put in uncomfortable situations because of it. If my family accepted me for what I was talented and passionate about and not what I had the "potential" to do I wouldn't have certain insecurities today. Everybody has their place. Introduce things to your kid but don't force it. It sucks for them and everybody else too.

Preach! Too many parents want their kids to do one thing only. As a kid my mother forced me to do tennis, ballet and Tae Kwon Do and she tried to force me to play football and soccer even though I hated it. I was a straight A student but that wasn't enough for her. I could do my homework, get A's in school, talk articulately and none of that mattered because she wanted me to play sports like my brothers. I couldn't play so I got no praise, I was often ignored unless she was angry enough about something to beat me, and I always felt alone because she allowed my brothers to bully me constantly. I pray to God my nieces, nephew and future kids can feel happy just being smart or social or whatever they want to be.

@@DrArthurCGarp I don't force my kids to do anything but I will let them do any activity they want, even if they're bad at it. My daughter can't dance, she wants to go to dance lessons so I let her 🤣 she doesn't have to compete. I'm sure she'll do a lot of different things over the years, she'll probably be bad at most of them and that's OK - the point of childhood is having fun.

It's not the kids it's the parents ! How can a child learn bad behavior ? Parents. Too many parents think whoppings or time out is the way. Where is the positive reinforcement, communication, mental stability from activities. Some of these parents don't even take their child out to enjoy themselves and release energy/have some "me time". Then think they have ADHD because they have so much built up in them. I see alot of parents don't even take time to really get to know their child. Bad parenting has became the way now days. The things I see I just shake my head. So many grow up to be hurt and confused. Don't even know how to pay a bill or manage credit. Parents are just baby sitters now days and a parent are supposed to be a teacher and a comforter first.

Preach it brother truth is, I never push my oldest but i had things in mind that I thought she could be. But i just kept quiet & motivated her along the way with her decisions. Now she does and gives pride in what she wanted & thought what was best for herself being future Chef. And my son still in school, but he has a bright future knows what he wants, he pick one of his choices and I'm happy & he has my support. He just need me as a his backbone to push him, kept him on that path since boys are different. I always said I will leave it to them to decide and not what I want them do be when they mind is not set on whatever and I'm a proud mom today.

I taught my kids the same principles as I grew up with, to earn it. But the problem is, school sports are compromised by the fact that the coaches often also have a club business with their sport. And if a kid is in the club (at $5,000 a year) they make the team. Meanwhile, the kids who are not in club, but naturally athletic, are outcasts because they aren’t in the club. It’s sick. My daughter made the volleyball team in high school after just arriving home from Texas the same day. All the other girls had been in the summer camp for two weeks prior ($500), and most were in the coaches club. So the team bullied my kid because she beat out another girl who was in their club. It was so bad she had to quit. Even the coach bullied her, she never got to play, and it was humiliating. Total crap.

I always hated getting participation trophies; it felt meaningless to receive them. On my softball team, one of my coaches gave out awards that actually meant something: if you did particularly well in a game, you got a brand new "game ball" for your shown improvement. I had just switched from baseball to softball that season after a few years of not playing, so when I won one after working really hard on my pitching I was ecstatic :D
