I’m 67 and really appreciate your videos. I’ve been a life long athlete. Whenever I lack motivation to go for a run, weight lift, ruck or cycle. I default to my new motto ”anything is better than nothing “ The ego can be peoples biggest enemy. In many cases to get outside and be active. It takes a lot of courage to start training around people if you’re over weight or obese . Anyway enjoy your content

At 78, I have AFib. Fortunately it comes and goes. I decided to engage in HIIT exercises on 2 separate occasions. Each put me 8n AFib. So as my electrocardiologist told me - you can do those things, just dial down the intensity. So I tried one again with less intensity and no problems. As was stated in this video, we have to be careful and the older we get, the truer that becomes. I'll keep on doing stuff to keep me stronger and maintain balance as long as i can

Great advice. Activity is marvellously beneficial. I'm 72 but became more active after retirement (at 58) than I had ever been before , mainly thanks to joining a hiking club. My daughter quietly realised, I think, that I wasn't doing enough and encouraged me to swim lengths regularly with her for a while at the pool. But the hiking really improved my stamina. I started also cycling a bit more , even to the shops or around the locality. Once per week I go with a friend checking out future club hikes, and once per fortnight I hike (and now lead low walks) with the club.I 'm not a particularly sociable person but the club has helped in that respect too - I'm not such a miserable beggar as I might be otherwise, lol! The only thing I am being careful about is wearing out one knee in particular, but it's never been the best since a knee cap dislocation in the 70s. Not hiking for a couple of weeks actually benefits that issue. Your very professional videos are so encouraging and very much enjoyed. My father dropped at 60 from a heart attack. But I don't smoke at all and hardly drink so fingers crossed I'll keep going healthily for another decade or so. 🙂

I've always found I get fitter and exercise more when I have a goal, it doesn't have to be a big one either, enter a fun run, cycle event or whatever sport you enjoy.

This was very helpful as I am coming out of a bit of a motivational slump. My new motto is - "make better choices". Choose nuts over biscuits; reading over surfing; standing over sitting; the bike instead of the car. I have started taking a walk after dinner and once I get back into my running that will be me fixed: just in time for my 75th birthday. :-). Your videos are a great source of helpful information. Thanks.

I met a guy on a bike ride today that was 70. He said five years ago he weighed 250 lbs. He had enough of that and started lifting weights, biking and swimming. Now he looks great, said he can do 100 push-ups in 4 minutes, and hasn’t felt this good in years. It really is never too late.

Really enjoy your videos, your professionalism really shines through, I’ve recommended your channel to friends. May I suggest, after you commented in the video that the technical nature put off some viewers, that you intersperse the technical with an adventure ride. I realise a new ride may not have been possible due to your Scottish winters. The inverse of our Queensland summers where we have had a couple of months of 34degree C with 100% humidity. Keep up the good work, we all need a bit of inspiration. Vern

The absolutely hardest thing is staying with it. I’ll work out, feel awesome for a couple of years, then bam, don’t feel like doing anything for a while, even stuff I enjoyed, and knowing all the terrific benefits. Drives me absolutely crazy when that happens

There are days / times when we all feel like this. I know I do! I try to find a goal to motivate me; a route I want to ride or, in my case, a video I want to shoot. In the meantime, I find doing something, even if it's just going for a walk, to be highly beneficial. It seems to slow down the rate of detraining.

I am 71 and just cycled from Edinburgh to Santander without worrying about my VO2 max once. Its baloney. Just know your limits and cycle within them.

Your opening comment is contrary to my opinion of what you are sharing about the realities of an aging athlete! I’m 56, highly active and plan to be until my last day! I hope that is 56 years from now :) You are a huge inspiration in how to do that, by showing how to adapt to get there! Some of your words have stayed with me, like when you mentioned accepting a slower run pace as we age. Thanks and please keep up your great series!

It could be just going up stairs a few more times during the day is a start. A simple thing I do is when I need a pee I will use the upstairs loo rather than the downstairs one. Then I sometimes go upstairs briskly to get the heart pumping abit more. Gardening is brilliant, a pity my Garmin watch hasn't a setting for it. When I'm on my allotment it reports a period of high stress where as I am actually exercising.

You don’t need a gym. Definitely. I like workouts with resistance bands. These don’t take up much space and are easily transportable; I’m taking mine away with me next week. A set of 5 cost me £17 two years ago and I find plenty of follow along real time video workouts here on youtube; I try a workout from a different channel each time. Anything from 12 minutes moderate to 30 minutes hard, depending on my mood. The other thing I feel is important is balance exercises, along with maintaining agility and flexibility, which I find deteriorates shockingly with age. A lot to do and fit in to stay reasonably fit! Lucky I’m retired. 😊

Actually your previous video's did put me off watching. Not everyone has access or can afford Vo2 max testing etc. So I have to admit I stopped watching them. I'm 70 in less than two weeks, but ride my gravel bike every day and exercise to ease all the wear and tear issues I now have. Unfortunately Ebikes are in my future as the arthritis in my knees is getting worse.

Thanks for explaining Ken, and I’m sorry I put you off. Hopefully I’ve tempted you back. VO2max is hugely important for independent living in later life so there’s also a self-test VO2max video which only needs a watch and a way of measuring distance.

We need to find a fat pie eater to see if it’s possible to change a “ lifestyle choice” ( topical subject ). It’s never too late. I know people that have failed to change and died of it. But also those that made simple changes and thrived ( for them ) anyway.

I enjoy your videos immensely and think they’re quite well done. I do, however, think that some of your “definitive“ statements about nutrition and autophagy and tests, like getting up and down off the ground, without using your hands, are questionable. There is no definitive test for humans that dictates when a person goes into autophagy And different parts of the body go into autophagy at different times, and in different ways. We are not mice. Much of the claims on the Internet about autophagy are taken from studies with mice. If you don’t feed a mouse for one day, it will lose 20% of it bodyweight. If you don’t feed it for three days, it will die. A correlation cannot be made to humans. And one can question promoting animal products such as yogurt or fish. Everybody is different, and you do often say that your meals are beneficial to you, and may not be to others There are so many examples of people who live well into their 90s who cannot complete the so-called tests that are popular on the Internet these days as to reaching a long life. My father lived into his 90s and there was no way in hell he could have ever gotten off the ground without using his hands, or more likely a chair or a couch Anyway, I appreciate all the hard work that goes into your videos and I will continue to support you and watch them Keep up the good work!

There is an enormous amount of variety between all of us, nurture and nature and genetics etc. the outline though is to optimise where possible and to minimise the bad stuff. A super fit super human will likely be able to down 20 pints the night before a marathon and still win. A mouse does live faster than a human but you can still starve a human to death it just takes longer. Avoiding illness, a good diet, enough exercise and mental wellbeing is likely the key ingredients for a fitter than average life. NOTWITHSTANDING the cards dealt with through birth. And those with the best genes and mitochondria will comfortable suffer if making bad lifestyle choices.

You’re right. Being too didactic on things can be wrong but it’s difficult to simplify with clarity when couched in caveats. I’ll bear it in mind. Thanks.
