Art is not a mountain to climb and you’re not too late to start painting. I wish I could connect the ones leaving these comments with the viewers who have started and are so happy about it that they want to share the experience with everyone else.
Art skills aren’t required to start enjoying the process by the way. It might seem like it at first but you’ll be spending most of the time on the actual work rather than watching it when it’s done.
Therefore it doesn’t make sense to think of painting as an exchange of energy where you put in all your work and get a painting out of it. You might get a terrible painting out of it so that’s a gamble at best.
But if the exchange happens in the process; you start working and you GET to work. That way the reward will always be there. It’s not based on luck or skill.

Something I always tell the youngsters I work with is that it's important to enjoy where you're at during each stage of the learning process. You can't always be chasing improvement or you'll burn out. Just enjoy drawing or singing or whatever it is you're doing. Keep doing it lots BECAUSE you enjoy it, and that improvement will come. It's not a race, not at any age.

I usually do 3 point perspective on all of my architectural designs. I use the 3rd vanishing point for verticality in buildings to get the scale across but of course it's also possible to just leave out that one if the work doesn't need it. For towns with all kinds of angles it's usually just faster to throw in a 3d block in to get that physical feeling of the shadows being cast on walls. I have no craftmanship principles on these decisions, just literally what gets me to the end result the fastest. I once drew a fisheye perspective town for carrots for an entire month with pencil. Needless to say I'm not going to live long enough to make that a habit XD (it was super fun though)

Is never late! I'm 34 years old, and for the last 15 years I drew about one small pencil drawing every month and always get frustated and stop doing it, never finish them, never continue or try improve. That change when I go back to study, make me learn again to be persistent and focus, I start slowly to draw more. In september I entry a drawing academy, now I draw every day for about 3 hours minimum and get a simple huion tablet, and tradicional materials. My mind change a lot, now every morning im excited for draw, I finish every painting (o drawing) I do independently of the result, no more frustration, just enjoyment, I see the results every day and think of new ways to improve, always learn. Hope someone find this inspirational and help you to keep going, we can do it guys! Cheers

An excellent video, thank you. We are so bombarded with perfect imagery: social media curation and culling, artists only showing their best work, people presenting themselves in the best possible light, with perfect teeth and color-balanced lighting, surrounded by designer environments. Yet the most useful postcards are the mistakes. The human side of the process.

Some people see shapes through outlines. For me it’s easier to see things as volumes. That’s why I’m more comfortable with painting than drawing. Having said that, it’s also possible to draw without lines too but it’s not something that has been popular in the age of the internet so it’s not seen as much. If you look at Rembrandt’s drawings he drew mostly with focus on volumes.

The technique part of this is pretty simple. Just normal blend mode brush for the entire thing and one layer with the additive glow on it. The real work is the composition and balancing the colours. That’s 99% of what my classes for schools consist of. I often encourage this sort of stripped down technique for my students as well because it’s hard to focus on fundamentals and interesting widgets of photoshop(most of them use that) at the same time. My livestreams on this channel are real time. I don’t know if that’s something that interests you but they’re all still on this channel for free :) (Btw the slowed down videos do -really- badly on yt so even though I do them every now and then, they’re quite expensive to produce as they take away from all my other projects and harm the channel itself)

Thank you for sharing that =) I think those unknowns are what can be a great source of anxiety and/or excitement. It just depends on how you look at it. It’s harder now to not have expectations when I stasrt painting because I NEED to have material for a video. At the same time I’m doing a lot to let the paintings be otherwise free from restricting specifications. If I decided to do a vlog month and inktober at the same time I’m pretty sure that pressure would kill my creativity and enthusiasm for art. So I take those boundaries pretty seriously.

@angrymikko
@angrymikko 3 жыл бұрын
Since I painted all day it was a resource management challenge to keep all the devices charged. I used to paint in one hour chunks. But DSLRs have a recording limit of 30 minutes (for taxes). This splits my work into 30 minute bits and then I change the camera battery while the memory card gets uploaded to premiere. I usually try to avoid having a cord attached for aesthetic reasons but in the end it couldn’t be avoided. (iPad drains the battery faster than it charges) Then of course there’s Vivi’s walks and food. I’m not going to say I have a clear productive rhythm to all of this. Just in my last livestream I misjudged how long the beast would be napping and my iPad died right when I ended the stream. I know it’s useless to seek balance in creative work. Yet I hope someday I’ll have enough experience to be able to schedule everything a bit better so that I can have more time in the edit and improve the quality of my channel.

They’ve updated the app to allow the videos to play while doing something else so I’ve listened to a ton of talks on storytelling, video production and social media marketing. This next tip might sound lame but hear me out: On top of that I’d also recommend checking out the official procreate manual on procreate website. It’s free but it’s also interactive. You can search any tool by name and be given exact information on how that function works. It’s beautifully illustrated too so it’s always clear to see what the explanations mean. However I don’t recommend anyone studying that stuff for hours. To paint in Procreate (or in ANY other app or program) you need to know how to adjust scale and opacity of a brush, how to undo and make new layers. That’s it and you probably already know all of the above already. The rest is just composition and most of all; endless repetition.

6hrs I wouldn’t be able to do one of these in a livestream but there’s a pretty good whale 🐳 I did paint earlier this year during a livestream. Hi Mikko! Love your videos! I was wondering if you can do a video on being able to paint more freely? Like I’m more of a tight painter I always feel like I have to blend EVERYTHING even tho I probably shouldn’t. I want to be able to paint more loosely and fight the urge to blend. Idk if you would be interested in talking about this topic but I would highly appreciate it if you do :) also lovely piece you’ve created today!
@angrymikko
@angrymikko 3 жыл бұрын
I briefly touched on this in my palette tutorial. I always need at least 3 colours for a surface. If you can verbalise the light logic in the piece for yourself. Then it should be easier to make those bolder colour choices and brush strokes because you won’t feel the need to hide it with blending. When you can say “this brush stroke belongs here for these reasons” then you can do it with a single stroke :) The great thing about contrasting brush strokes is that they look really bad when they’re in the wrong place so that skill is relatively fast to learn. The punishment of missed hues or brush directions sting so badly that after a few dozen paintings they practically scream to be fixed. You start seeing them by just exposing yourself to the risk of getting it very wrong at first. How fast can you do 40 paintings? Set yourself a deadline and just go for it in total yolo-mode💪

Love the mountain metaphor! I've found your videos super inspiring as I'm working on that whole "three years of fundamentals" part. One thing I wonder, though, is if you do know what drives you and what interests you, how you get inspiration from other artists without competing. For example, I know that I'm learning to illustrate because I want to express my unique experience of gender as a trans person through various illustrated media like webcomics, games, and tarot cards. My goal isn't "do webcomics like X person," for example, "express my experience through webcomics." That said, I have a sense of art styles that would help me to express my ideas, and of course there are examples of those styles that I've encountered and want to use as inspiration. I'd love to hear you talk at some point about how to tow the line between inspiration and getting discouraged trying to emulate others.
@angrymikko
@angrymikko 3 жыл бұрын
Mimicking art styles that you enjoy is a normal part of developing your own style. In the beginning it might trigger the imposter syndrome of trying to be someone else. After doing the process to several of the things that you like to have as a part of your own aesthetic you’re eventually going to notice that the influence sponge is it’s own living individual thing and no longer just a replicant of it’s parts. It’s not really any different to how the experiences and people in your life have influenced you. You are your own person and the experience that has brought you to this day doesn’t make you any less of an unique individual. That’s at least how I think of my own style.

It’s 12” might upgrade for a new one next year if it helps screen recording to be more stable but other than that I haven’t really noticed any significant changes since the 2018 version. They’re almost small upgrades

Do you use reference material when painting something like this?
@angrymikko
@angrymikko 3 жыл бұрын
I always search for as many references as I can whenever I want to paint something new. I’ve done so many whales though that my block in got pretty close to the lines I drew to clarify some areas like the area under the eye where the light whale skin meets the mouth.

@angrymikko

No, I don’t right now I’m focusing on creating tutorials every month for my channel memberships. I might make SS course if I have the time and can come up with an idea that fits their class format.

@@angrymikko Thank you for the quick reply. I guess I assumed because you offered a skillshare discount. I just bought your brush set. Do you have a tutorial introducing them and explaining when you use which brush? Thank you.

Oh my, I just saw your IG post introducing the brushes. Sorry for being the millionth person to ask about your brushes. :-)
@angrymikko
@angrymikko 3 жыл бұрын
Because each brush was developed over the course of hundreds of paintings the features might take hours to explain. I do mention which brush I am using in every video. It’s usually in the beginning because I don’t go back and change them. There is this one technique that is enabled in a lot of my brushes and I’m just going to link the video here because it’s better to see in practice. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/etd9YNKY0LfYh6M.html I recommend getting used to that because it can make the worflow so much smoother in the long run.

I use temporary layers whenever I’m trying something new. The ground and water are also on their own layers.
