i can't tell you how many times i've said to myself, "i have no ideas, i'm blank, i'm not creative, i'm derivative, unoriginal, not an idea guy" i have a lot of hard skills, you know, software stuff that i've earned over the last 30 or so years. i'm gonna play this over and over until i get it.
@angrymikko

The bad thing with saying stuff like that to ourselves is that we start to take it as a part of our identity. I used to say all the time that I’m a slow painter. I declared it to every art teacher in hopes of lowering their expectations. It took years to get over it and it had nothing to do with my painting skills. I had just talked myself into wasting time by not doing any design decisions while I was working. It’s still crazy to think how paralysed it made me.

Especially, when you have trouble overcoming something your parent tells you in your youth that I "wouldn't make it" or if your university program director tells you that "who said you were good? a previous school? awards?" Then you realize that all of this is objective. It's all our own critic that tells us not to keep going even if you actively tell you to keep trying anyway. I think being able to accept that what we think is "bad" about our work might just be the quirk we have that allows us to be unique. We may not "like" it per se, because we want to look like someone else's style or work. Sadly, that's part of the process too. And once we overcome it, we realize that we're not that bad... OR we're on our way there. :) Just keep at it! :) Another thing was that recently I was being marketed to a client and this client was so full of himself. Told me I shouldn't expect to get work just cos I asked. True. Told me that I was bad and that I couldn't just go out and ask for work. But lecture wall of text later plus some religious context involved, he didn't even look at my portfolio linked in the email I sent. And to clarify, I was simply connecting, not asking for a job. He even told me that he had a low budget anime project, but he wouldnt even let me have it because it would impact his profits. --in the ultimate end of that conversation, I quoted his own biography about "helping the art community grow", etc, and he totally thought I was very young and starting in the industry. I'm almost 30 with formal education and professional work accomplished... POINT WAS: people like this exist! So, work on not being that to yourself! :) That's my goal in my career. To gain experiences to tell people who want to work in art to keep going. It's a challenge, but you can do it! It takes time, more or less for some, but a lot of experts only show their final work. A lot of these pieces takes hours. Speedpaints make us feel like it's so "easy" for the pros. It all just takes time. Hope this helps! Keep going! PS: Love your work, Mikko. I've been binging your videos to keep me company when I try to be creative. I've begun to dream creatively again. :D

Beautiful painting, and good points. The analogy of building a creative library is really interesting. Also, everyone develops their own style from the art that inspires them, so someone's work may have some shared themes or artistic styles from more "famous/artists" works in the overall genre.
@angrymikko

Sustainable art style is like a big blender for the Pinterest board in your head. When you’re young it might have just “fan” type of things in there but as time goes by the ingredients get more diverse and the resulting art smoothie usually has more of that individual character in it. What I’m really saying here is that my art is like a big party mix of my favourite things. Okay this metaphor has officially gone off the rails about 5 minutes ago... 🧐
@smishstudio
@smishstudio 3 жыл бұрын
@@angrymikko these are great metaphors! I agree. Earlier in my art learning, I would try to use the style of another artist to create my own images. I was trying to learn the techniques they used in their work. Now I use bits and pieces of techniques I learned from them to make my own style of art. Describing it as a smoothie of influences is so much easier 😁

@angrymikko
@angrymikko 3 жыл бұрын
I think I’m going to do another course for concept art students soon but those are probably not what my subscribers here think they are. They are art classes, not about what or how I paint. There might be few of my paintings in there but those are mostly the examples where I can show my own mistakes without talking bad about some artist that isn’t present 🤷‍♂️ For what it’s worth. The classes DO work for the students that do the work. They don’t improve magically just because I do the lectures but the ones that improve really focus their energy on the right things. That’s the part that I’ve always loved about doing the courses. It would be nice to do one for people outside of Finland or game schools but I’m a bit afraid that most people except it to be in the tutorial format. There’s a reason why art schools don’t work like that. But communicating that to the general audience would be really tricky or probably even risky :/

@@angrymikko people like me usually look for tutorials because, we are trying to find guidance. I think that understanding what guidance *actually* is when it comes to art, and painting specifically, is a major step in the right direction. Learning the fundamentals, and anything else really, from someone you look up to can make all the difference. It's not just what you learn, it's also how you go about learning, and finding the right frame of mind to do so. Looking for magical ways to improve is in fact a part of the learning process, if you can eventually see it for the mistake that it is. What you wrote only makes me want to participate in one of yout classes even more xD If you ever seriously consider doing this sort of thing, I hope you make it well known. There are a lot of people who'll be happy to take that step with you, I promise you that.

I still have a few of the older video raw materials on my pc but before I piece them together I can’t be sure if I have all of them. I need to constantly delete footage because honestly I just can’t afford the storage space to keep it all. For reference: My current illustration video is right now at 6teras and it doesn’t even include the b-roll or talking head. I hope I can at some point have more of the footage on hand for later use but it’s still too expensive for me to hold on to. If there’s full footage of this to make a longer video of I’ll make one. The long form process videos take about 2 days to make so it’ll be after my current project is published.

Interesting. I honestly never took the question 'This reminds me of...' as a negative comment in any way. To me it was actually the start of a dialog about diving deeper into the meaning of the subject. When it's my work, it's actually an exciting comment for me, and I immediately tackle the comment because I want to see what other ways my art might be tickling someone's brain that I didn't ever consider. From that perspective, I use it myself, not realizing some people might not appreciate it it. I've always had an understanding that the brain works by lumping things together and categorizing things, then branches them off and labels them. So maybe I need to be more conscious of that. For me, when someone says 'This reminds me of...', it's a chance that the now the art piece in question has the opportunity to become the label and new key index for that entire category in that person's head. It could become the definition of that style for that person.
@angrymikko
@angrymikko 2 жыл бұрын
It’s not often meant as a negative or positive thing. Just something that people say but reaffirming your imagination into boxes like this is restrictive and it can be used as an opportunity to see new categories. I wouldn’t use this technique in a conversation with someone else but when I notice myself thinking that sentence I can use it as a key to broaden my way of looking at things. One of the most common questions I get on this channel is, how to develop ones imagination. This is one of my most used techniques because it’s one that can be applied to so many things I see. It’s definitely not easy to catch my own mind doing that and I’m sure I fall victim to the easiness of umbrella categories all the time without even realising it.

I like what you said about lighting for this piece. I've done a bit of work as a colourist and a few months ago I was asked to colour the cover page for an issue. I was tearing my hair out trying to make it visually striking, as a cover needs to be, while keeping some rather complex interior lighting with various light sources realistic. I spent HOURS trying different things. Eventually I just asked myself which one was more important - visual impact, or realistic lighting? Obviously it was visual impact, along with contrast and the definition of character form. Once I had that, the final version of the piece ended up looking fantastic. Sometimes different pieces require prioritising different things. Recognising that - preferebly before you've spent five hours painting and re-painting the same thing - is an important skill!

And the part about reading feedback in good faith! Reading anything in good faith, honestly. It's such a healthy mindset for engaging online. I think it's a vital one, honestly, and the fact that the opposite is becoming more commonplace is worrying. We need to stage a reading-things-in-good-faith revolution.

I reply to comments from 2 years ago every day! This painting only uses a couple of layers to keep the resolution so big. It’s perfectly okay to paint on a single layer and I often prefer that method. Especially when starting out I think a lot of artists think they NEED all of the options an app provides when mostly it’s: Brush size, brush opacity and how to change colours. That’s all. The rest are just options and don’t need to be absorbed into your workflow all at once. You’ll notice that some will never be necessary at all. When was the last time I used multiply, hard light, colour or difference blend modes? I can’t even remember but I can imagine when a new artist sees those in the list they might think they’re something they need to start using. Just do what you can with the brush first and go from there. The brush will always be the most important tool anyhow and it will take a lifetime to learn :)

Hey @angrymikko. First off, love your work, it's so opposite of my natural painting style, that it just captures me and has allowed me to break out of my default and has allowed me to grow. Question, have you ever found a method to actually mix on procreate as if you used a palette knife? Like you already have two colors down, and you drag across that still allows for texture and overlap without getting the super blurry smudge. Your single brush videos have helped me tapper back, i always feel like im searching for the next brush that will make my paintings feel more alive, and watching your videos has helped me get away from that.
@angrymikko
@angrymikko 3 жыл бұрын
Most of my brushes have this feature in them: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/etd9YNKY0LfYh6M.html That’s how I find the right hues for those transitions. Also make sure you adjust the colour picker time to shorter than default to get the most out of it. You can just look at any of my videos to see how often I use that instead of the palette to change hues. It cuts out so much time I can honestly recommend it without hesitation. You don’t need my brushes to do either of those 2 things. The instructions on how to set up the angle reaction is in that video.

@angrymikko
@angrymikko 3 жыл бұрын
Depends on what you’re doing really. I definitely wouldn’t recommend it to anyone who’s learning to paint. However there’s a time and a place where it’s the fastest way to get a concept done. I’ve used photos in many movie projects but the goal was never to make a marketing material illustration for general public. It was about presenting an idea for the visual development team. Two of those projects were done in Procreate btw. A concept image is never meant for print so resolution is never an issue as long as it reads. There are some who think photo bashing is always bad but that’s a bit too broad of a statement to say about any technique. I personally don’t teach photo bashing in my own concept art courses but that’s because in the list of priorities it’s way below what students should be working on. I know it’s one of those shiny objects like smudge tool or glowing effects but it’s not that difficult to add on top of solid foundation when there’s a basic understanding of composition, detail and contrast placement underneath it. Also the web is just full of tutorials on this so I think it would be a waste of the students time if I wasted lecture slots for something so relatively trivial in the bigger picture and considering where they are at the time of starting one of my classes. Now if someone uses this comment as proof that “Mikko hates photo bashing!” Then those aren’t paying attention. Art is a little more complicated and absolute truths rarely exist.

I use the smudge sometimes for very specific elements like the very top edges of clouds but in 99% of cases I don't touch it at all. Since you're not my student I'm not going to tell you what to do but I'd just be careful with it, especially in PS where the effect looks bad once the same brush stroke changes direction. Personally I always blend my hue transitions by painting with a brush, but that's just me.

This is for anyone reading! - Would you be so kind to sharing any insights? I am looking to understand more from other artist by listening to what you think of when you are choosing/using hue, saturation, and luminance in a painting. [H] Hue - For me I initially think of the feeling of the color. I also try to refer to shape theory to partner with those feelings. - What practices do you think of when you are hue-ing? [S] Saturation is a little more difficult for me. So far I’m thinking saturation is to guide the reader’s eye. I’m thinking the more saturated the more contrast with the desaturated one can use to focus the artwork. - Is there another theory to help guide your sat/desat portions? [L] Luminance - For me i think of lighting and how much the texture of the object reflects or absorbs that light. I try to refer to 3D shaping and how the light bends around it. - Is there another idea to help guide the luminance process? **** I’m looking for ways to think to keep me focused and balanced as i deal with color and composition. **** I am in a evaluating, deconstructing, and constructing mood so feel free speak your mind. Thanks for your time and patience. Much love and God bless!

I recommend watching my colour theory videos: Analogous colours, also do that exercise mentioned in the video. After you have a good handle on the hue you're working with try "How to use Grey" and try to implement it with the first exercise to make an illusion of complimentary colours. Don't desaturate already painted sections. It rarely, if ever works. If an area is too saturated it's usually just delete it and repaint the entire area. Desaturation murders transition colours so I wouldn't really recommend doing that especially if you're not used to spotting dead colours in a transition yet.

Hey can u make a video where u show us every feature in procreate that you found the most useful ?
@angrymikko
@angrymikko 3 жыл бұрын
Layers & brush size. These are the most useful ones. I was able to use procreate on the phone before it had any of the other features added on top of that. I’d actually recommend against looking at an hour walkthrough through ALL of the widgets because it can give an impression that all of them are equally useful. They’re not. Out of blend modes I’d read the wikipedia descriptions for screen, multiply, overlay and add. There are tons of blend modes but a video describing all of them would give the same illusion that they’re all as useful as those few. Reading the description on them is useful because it highlights how they affect value and especially saturation. Most beginners don’t consider the added saturation overlay for example adds and this can really hurt a painting that would be perfectly good. I know the descriptions aren’t exactly the most entertaining to read but when it’s limited to those few it’s at least pretty fast for anyone to do.

I did what most people do for years. Went into the photoshop blend mode box and scrolled through the options hoping to see what works. SUCH A TERRIBLE WASTE OF TIME XD omg Then one day I just went to read them which literally is like 3-5 paragraphs and I can't explain how it completely changed my life. It's a completely different thing to plan on using a blend mode when you know what it does as opposed to just wishing to get lucky with the blend mode reel like you're playing the slots. Now I'm only making fun of this habit because I did that too and it was just me hoping to get lucky. Total nonsense =D p.s. look up lighten too! It's one of my recent favourites

I have a technical question, hoping someone can help! You see around 3:42 Mikko is adding a pale purple colour on a layer behind the tent, and it doesn't darken the tent on the layer above. When I do this, the layer above will darken in the areas where the colour was added, and my only option is to carefully erase the colour, which can be time consuming and imprecise. My question is: is this normal? And in Mikko's case, it didn't happen perhaps because the purple colour is too mild to add to the layer above?
@angrymikko
@angrymikko 3 жыл бұрын
The purple/mauve hue is on the sky layer. I use 100% opacity in my brush so the tent completely covers what’s happening behind it. If your brush results in a lot of half opacity brush strokes you can simply duplicate the layer until it’s at 100% opacity. For this part it’s handy to change the background colour to something crazy like neon pink or yellow so you see if you have transparent pixels remaining in the layer.
@lounakin

@@angrymikko Ok! Thank you so much! I have been duplicating layers but I thought I was changing the value of the colours rather than increasing the opacity :)

I think our obsession with originality is part of the problem. Ancient, medieval, and renaissance artists cared more about creating the best, most ideal version of something rather than the most original. While I don’t think we should return to that philosophy, I do think it helps to remember that originality wasn’t always the highest virtue of art and no one has to always create with that as the highest goal.
@angrymikko
@angrymikko 2 жыл бұрын
One could spend the rest of their life recreating an art piece from those times but every version would still be a version with something new. The residue of an artist’s own life can’t be erased from their work but we can’t often see the lens we’re looking through. I might be painting a tree but people see it as an expression of romanticism. I can’t see the lens that give perspective to the way I depict the surrounding world as it appears to me. Picasso said that he painted the same painting for most of his career. “les demoiselles d'avignon” might have looked like Cézannes Bathers to him but for the rest of the world we see his way of seeing the subject from multiple angles, troubled (and problematic) view of women and playful exploration of line rhythms. We don’t see Cézanne’s women we see Picasso himself. I’m not concerned if something is original or not because if you look closely enough; everything is. And seeing those nuances can help us understand our own art a bit better and through that we’ll gain something more valuable than originality. We’ll have more self awareness which is a gift that art can give us that’s not dependent on other’s opinions. Whether or not something is original isn’t an interesting question to spend too much time and energy on because beyond it lies more interesting ways to see and create art.

@angrymikko
@angrymikko 3 жыл бұрын
Does it really matter either way? Both have the same basic features needed for painting. Get one of those and paint with it. Or both since they’re so cheap and pick the one which has an UI that fits your workflow.
@sandeepthakuralaful
@sandeepthakuralaful 3 жыл бұрын
@@angrymikko I agree, but sometimes some tools are better implemented by one app than another and that makes lot of difference to your workflow, specially if that tool is used 1000 times during painting, like color picker. I know every artist is different and likes to do things different way but still just wnated to know your openion on these two apps and how they stack up. I started to draw just couple of days ago, since it makes me feel relax. I love your paitings. Since I just started my drawings are complete crap and that makes me frustrated but I know if I keep practicing I will improve.
@angrymikko
@angrymikko 3 жыл бұрын
Well I can say for me the fact that (at the moment of writing this) you can't colour pick with your finger completely disqualifies Photoshop on the iPad for being an option to paint. For painting you need colour picker, opacity and brush size controls. Those are pretty hard to fail at development. It's different if a lot of your work is mostly either graphic design or requires photo editing. In that area those small things really do add up but when it comes to painting it's just about how you use that brush. Yesterday I did a whole cinematic sci space scene in photoshop for a commission with a mouse. At no point did I make a single brush stroke so obviously that type of production is very different to the paintings I do on this channel. For that work I haven't seen anything that would rival Photoshop but it's complete overkill if one uses it just for painting. What I like about Procreate is that the UI matches my thoughts on this issue. When I am in procreate the UI doesn't present other options as important as the brush and the colour palette. Everything else is out of sight and it helps me to focus on the actual painting. The features hidden behind those drop down menus are nice. It would be so much slower to paint without gaussian blur. But they're not necessary. Without them we'd all still get the work done and that should be more important. I've paid photoshop licenses for decades now even when I was almost completely broke. This problem seems rather... silly to me? What I mean is that in comparison to a ps license it's so cheap to even buy 3 apps and then just stick to the one that works for you. This decision really shouldn't be one to get stuck on. There's so much to learn when it comes to painting and the app or program you choose has no impact on learning how to put a composition together.

@@angrymikko thanks, your paintings inspire me alot. Since I started drawing just couple of days back, my drawings are not good which I understand will improve with time and practice, even after understand this fact, I get frustrated when I fail to draw what I am imagining. Any advice for that initial frustration , how overcome it and be better at drawing. For example I tried to draw mountains with snow but I was not able to give it depth and poor choice of color made it looked like glacier than a mountain, that made me sad and frustrated about how to choose right color and shades to draw that mountain.
@angrymikko
@angrymikko 3 жыл бұрын
sounds like this particular issue could be easily solved by making a few dozen paintings based on referenced palettes first and learning from those on how the colour works on that particular topic/surface. I've made 2 palette tutorials already on this channel, you could follow either one to get started. I know this is not sexy or fast advice and 20-30 paintings will take some time but I guess it all comes down to just how much do you want to get that one goal.

All the painting apps have the same basic features. If you have brushes, layers and blend modes then you have everything you need. I’ve looked at few of the painting apps people have asked me to review but there’s really nothing interesting to say about them. They’re pretty much all the same. This channel is more about art and painting rather than a tech channel. Many of the apps are so cheap too that people really shouldn’t stress too much about the software choices. Just get to painting, save that energy for visual problem solving and you’ll already be in a more productive mindset :)
