So if a hero loses in every way, and he/she has no advantage left, that means the hero is tragic? Happy Birthday by the way🎁

@@NourZikra what if the hero is the only one worse off? Say for example, Excalibur; wouldn't that make it tragic?

One question here miss, is it still considered tragic if the character failed to save the person that they love? But the main character is still alive at the end? Does it depend on their feelings about their inability to change something at a certain point in the past? Does it make it not tragic if their able to overcome the hopelessness despite experiencing it many times?

Currently trying to write a fanfic that’s basically the backstory of the game The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and obviously, that’s a tragic ending. I came to this video hoping to get some advice and I couldn’t believe it when I saw your copy of Creating a Champion in the background! 😸 I hope to learn more about writing so I can make this project a good story.

Happy Birthday, Nour! A vid suggestion: How to write exposition. I know you made a video on this earlier, but sometimes I'm not sure if I'm providing needed info in a natural way or info dumping. If you do decide to make a more detailed vid, could you provide a few examples of what is correct exposition and what is mainly info dumping?

I feel like writing a romantic tragedy that leaves off the two main love interests broken off and separated because they live in a time where society makes it illegal for them together and they wouldn't be able to express and be together in front of everyone if they got together.

I'm planning on writing a story that is about a teen mom in the 1700's who gets kicked out by her family a couple years after giving birth because they can't afford having both her and her son. She is getting treated horribly by people who pass by her, and on the 3rd day she gets tuberculosis. The 6th day she meets an old woman who takes both her and son in to live with her. The 7th and last day she's in bed couching violently and when the night arrives she passes away under the moonlight. I believe that is a tragic story, because she doesn't die for a cause, she dies from an illness, leaving behind her 3 year old son. The old woman will take care of him, but he has to live on without his mother who has been treated like garbage for the past week and his whole life she had been yelled at and sometimes punched by her family. The girl almost doesn't experience happiness at all through the story, her physical condition getting worse and worse and on the last day passing away. That is the saddest story I've ever made, and I would say it's a tragic story.

Happy (belated) birthday Nour, and great video! A quick question: I’ve read in many places that when writing the first draft you shouldn’t read any other books or anything so it’s all your thoughts, not just repeating what you liked in somebody else’s work. For the next month or so, I need to read a book for school and I’m wondering what your advice is. Is it nothing to stress about, or should I put my writing on hold? Thanks!
@NourZikra
@NourZikra 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! I think it's nothing to stress about. I read books while writing all the time. Keep in mind that I'm also very slow at writing. So, if I were to not read books before I finish my first drafts, I would be not reading for months or even years. I've personally never found an issue in it. What I do, though, is avoid books with the same subject matter as mine until I have a strong understanding of my own story. For example, while outlining Divinity Falling, I didn't read books with fallen angels. But you should be fine with a book for school.

@@NourZikra Unfortunately I kind of think it is related to the book I’m writing, since I’m writing a sci-fi novel and for school we’re reading Dune :/ But I see what you mean. I probably shouldn’t stress about it. Thanks so much for the advice, really appreciate it!

Hi Nour, I'm one of your big fans and I have a question about writing. I cannot hold one story long. I mean I can't keep writing it I'm not sure it has good characters and plot. I wanna keep going with my work and finish it this year. Any advice?
@NourZikra
@NourZikra 3 жыл бұрын
Hi J J! Thanks for the kind words! If you're unable to hold one story long, it sounds like you're getting bored of it after a while. This might be due to a sagging middle, where your middle chapters don't have high stakes or momentum. The best way to fix that is to consider what fun things (fun for you to write but terrible for your characters to go through) you can add to the middle chapters. These stakes must be tied to the main conflict or at least a subplot. Usually, adding high stakes wherever I feel the story start to dip keeps me excited and wanting to keep going. I hope that helps! 🙂

my character starts the story not having hope and getting it back and then she loses the person who gave it to her and she loses her faith along with it, does that count? cause its more like she's back where she started.

If the story is about 2 lovers & they have a very power love story but in the end someone will let them break up, is that a tragic story? But no one will die! (or I have to let someone die to make it a tragic story?)

My story is apparently not a tragedy because: 1) MC lives 2) MC fails worse and worse until final, unexpected success 3) MC accidentally causes death of other character 4) story is hopeful because MC has learned an important lesson

I think writing is about establishing expectations and deliver them. In Romeo and Juliet, the act1 was clear, they want to be together. They add a lot of obstacles for them in act 2, and of course, they are both dead at the end, but as Romeo was taking the poison, he thinks it is the only way he can be with Juliet, it doesn't matter if it's in life or death, his goal was succeeded, resolution ended, audiences satisfied(The event that Juliet wakes up and see Romeo body was the aftermath, it doesn't affect the story that much, but maybe it would be more tragic if she lived and become deranged) So I think to give a good tragic ending is to make the hero succeed on what they trying to do but in the worst way, or have them realize that their goals are not the right ones.
