Older FNAF games tend to be appealing in their simplicity. Simple gameplay, simple premise, simple story. Newer FNAF games are more complex, with a lot of unique and original ideas being poured into larger experiences. They’re more fun, but less simple. The shift from one era to another was subtle, as the natural growth cycle of the franchise and a demand for originality dictated a shift towards newer and bolder things, and in turn a lot of games in the middle have a little bit of both. Regardless, both formats work really well, as evident by the massive onset popularity of FNAF 1 and Security Breach especially, though there will always exist the conceit that FNAF changed from one thing to another, making it more appealing to some people, and less to others. As someone who only got into FNAF after Sister Location, I’ve always had a natural bias to the newer games in the franchise. But I understand why many people have had a difficult time adjusting to the formula change. My biggest hope is that the two formats can be balanced and mixed together when need be, keeping all fans satisfied at all times. However, in order to start in that direction, we need to accept both eras for their merits. Right now, modern FNAF is under scrutiny by a large part of the fandom. Which makes sense, the older games have had a much longer time to fester and grow nostalgic in people’s minds. But I really hope more videos like this emerge to give the Steel Wool era the credit it deserves.

I think that part of the old games becoming 'boring' is simply the fact that we've all played them to absolute death, and the mechanics of how they work are ingrained in our brains at this point - I wonder if someone experiencing the older games for the first time would feel the same way? At the time they came out, FNAF games were a genre of their own, and provided a horror experience that was entirely novel - I don't think a moment playing any game in the last 10 years has stood out in my brain as so absolutely terrifying more than seeing Foxy run down that hallway towards me in the original game! I think you're absolutely right in that Security Breach is the direction the franchise needed to go in to keep it popular, it's just a shame that the game is tainted by how glitchy and bugged it was on release, though this is a common issue through the entire industry, not just FNAF - smh capitalism, let devs finish games properly instead of forcing a deadline and releasing an unfinished game 🙄 Great video Jess! Can't wait for more content 🥰

You can't really compare fnaf 1 and SB because first is made by one man and last made by whole animators team. And even considering it, fnaf 1 still beats SB in it's best aspect: environmental storytelling. First game gave your enough information to understand why animatronics alive and why want get to you, while SB gives only vague clues which is pointless without knowing the WHOLE lore and even then confuse your, or meaningless mysteries. If SB came out as it is in 2014 I HIGHLY doubt it would get even an fraction of popularity of first game besides furry fans, because it's an empty present box, badly using already used in indie horror's game mechanics, bringing attention only by appealing appearance. This game may be enjoyed only ironically, other Steel wool's game might play well, but they still really bad at story (only HW had potential, but it all gone to drain) I have no hope for their games, but at least they provide ideas to artists and writers (which only look at it because of fame of the originals)

Well Security Breach made Fnaf popular again and even more so than it was in 2015 so I agree

I agree with this! I love the old games but they can get boring pretty fast for me.

I honestly have to say I agree with alot of the points you made, I love the old FNAF games for what they are but I prefer modern FNAF games, while yes the lore is significantly different from what it was during the era of fnaf 1-fnaf 3 it's still incredibly interesting and I like that it seems to be telling a (mostly) new story while still expanding upon the original to an extent (as of right now). Despite the story however the gameplay of the older games, while fun maybe the first time you play it, can get repetitive and the modern fnaf games are going in the right direction, the series needed change for it to continue thriving. People can absolutely still prefer the original games made by scott there's nothing wrong with that but I feel like saying the newer fnaf games aren't as good is just genuinely objectively wrong, they are a big part of why the franchise is as big as it is now
