This is part 1 of 2 in which I explain what Regal RPX is and how it differs from the competition. IMAX digital, Regal RPX, Cinemark XD, Dolby Cinemas, Essex T-Rex, Bow Tie Cinemas BTX all differ just a tad and I'm here to help you figure out what is what with them all.

I live in CA and the Irvine Spectrum theater has the best IMAX theater in the area according to several managers at multiple locations. They also have an RPX theater and I have seen MANY movies at this theater in both IMAX and RPX. I have an unlimited pass, so I go see movies 3-5 times a week. Instead of TV, I have no TV service. In my opinion, IMAX has a slight edge over RPX. Both are FAR superior to their regular screens in the same theater. On a scale from 1-10… Normal screens = 5 RPX = 9 IMAX = 10 Both IMAX and RPX have excellent sound. In this theater, the RPX is significantly bigger than their standard screens (they have 21) and IMAX is a little bigger than RPX. HOWEVER… since I have an unlimited membership (which costs about $24/mo here) here’s what I do. Their unlimited pass does NOT include IMAX, RPX, 4DX, or Screen-X, they charge a surcharge for those. IMAX surcharge = $8 RPX surcharge = $3 So, I will often choose RPX instead of IMAX based on price alone. If they were equal or IMAX was $4 or $5 I’d do IMAX more, but at nearly triple the price it isn’t worth it. In my opinion, RPX is 10 times better than standard and IMAX is 10% better than RPX. I occasionally seen movies in 4DX, just for the gimmick of it. Some movies do a really good job in 4DX others don’t. Example: SpiderMan No Way Home in 4DX wasn’t great. Ghostbusters Afterlife was GREAT in 4DX, even though the movie wasn’t anywhere near as good as SpiderMan. In my opinion Screen-X is terrible. I’ve been to 3 Screen-X theaters in 3 different cities and they all had exit sign cutouts in the projection which ruins it. Hope that helps. IMAX is 10-20% better than RPX. PS: I just saw Top Gun Maverick on a standard screen and I plan to see it on RPX, IMAX, and 4DX. Probably in that order.

@@vipnetworker I recently saw top gun in screen x and I love it the action scenes fill the whole theater yes you do notice the exit signs at first but quickly forget remember the side screens are not for you to turn your head to just peripheral if you start watching the side screens to much you will notice distortion. Screen x Is meant to blend in a picture It works for me also you have to pick a good seat

Rpx has the best all around experience in my area. imax is a very large screen but it's audio is not up to par with rpx. RPX always has comfortable seats with transducers.

The sound at rpx screens is amazing. I hadn't felt the famous theater rumble during loud scenes since going to cinemas in the 90s. The projector is insanely bright and gives a superior amount of detail. Any cinema I've been to that isn't rpx I leave feeling underwhelmed by picture and sound. Moat theateres phone it in and especially since most employees are young teenagers who simply just aren't interested in the technical aspects of a good cinema experience.

@@MovieUniversity yeah they can be. my favorite theater actually just had a huge rpx overhaul not more than 5 years ago so everything is still quite nicely maintained thankfully!

Just bought tickets to see Lion King in IMAX, but the theatre is 20 minutes away. Want to know if its worth it or just a 10 min drive to RPX.

I’m a devoted RPX theaters fan. It’s my go-to for new movies, especially Marvel films. The screen quality and graphics are fantastic, and the sound system is top-notch. With features like butt-kickers, Dolby surround, and comfortable recliner seats, it’s a cinematic experience that’s truly exceptional. I prefer this over IMAX due to the cozier setting - a recliner-seated single couch in a nearly private room. RPX wins for me! 🤓🤙🏼

Huh, this is the only format that my Regal is playing THE BOY AND THE HERON in, so I came here to see what the 17$ price tag is about. And this theater is less than 6 months old, so it should be good!

Exact same reason for me…lol….Regal’s 4DX is amazing (3D is even better), while the Screen X is a cool idea, but needs more time in the oven. Haven’t done RPX, but might give it a go this weekend, since it’s the only premium Ghibli screening around…

saw elvis in rpx- best experience ever. ive watched it two more times but in standard, it’s just not the same :( so sad they removed the rpx option so quickly

@@MovieUniversity probably the latter since Thor: Love & Thunder came out 2 weeks after Elvis and took the RPX theater since it’s a blockbuster movie.

I have never gone to regal RPX before or even experienced it before. Besides, the super Mario Brothers movie is coming coming out this April, which is probably gonna be on an Easter week. Like I said, I’ve never done RPX trying out Dolby Atmos or even auto 3-D surroundsound system that goes in partnership with RPX and regal… But I’ll do it when the super Mario brothers movie comes out

I saw Endgame twice. Once at Movie Studio Grill in Orlando and the second time at my local IMAX digital. I was pleasantly surprised how far my IMAX has come in a year. Both were great, very comfortable seats and fantastic audio, but the IMAX won out because of the bigger size screen.

this might be a dumb question, but is rpx in 3D? because i booked no way home tickets in rpx because that's all that was avalible but i'm worried its 3D

It shouldn’t be. 3d has almost disappeared (thank God). Your receipt should say if it’s 3d. It you don’t see 3d on it then you should be good. You can always call the theater to verify though.

@@MovieUniversity Curious why you don’t like 3D? I’m neither for or against. I got a pair of 3D glasses in a Regal cinemas giveaway and having your own is definitely better than the ones they hand out. The ones I got are more comfortable. I’ve seen 20+ 3D movies at theaters and I’d say it’s been about 50/50. 50% bad, I wish I had seen in 2D instead. 50% okay, but not amazing. I’ve continued to hope for something amazing, it just hasn’t happened yet. At least for me.

I prefer RPX over 4DX but it's up to your personal preference. The combinations you're talking about are owned by three different companies. IMAX is its own company. 4DX and ScreenX are owned by by South Korean company CJ CGV and RPX is owned by Regal. RPX is a competing format to IMAX and you will never see it combined. CJ CGV provides different types of premium offerings to IMAX and you will also never see them combined. CJ CGV license their technology to companies such as Regal. So you may see a ScreenX, RPX and IMAX in one location, but they will never be combined to make one super format.

I don't know if it's just the one I went to or what . But the answer I'd no not worth it . Sound was muffled sounding and the seats are leather but fo not recline. If it cost the same as a standard ticket but I'm really not sure what I paid extra for ..

This video post left out talking or mentioning ASPECT RATIO on RPX screens. WHY? This looks like IMAX the way IMAX should have converted long ago so ALL movies fit the screen correctly. What I'm seeing at 2:51 shows me a movie probably being shown correctly in 2.39 : 1 aspect ratio. Which tells me, unlike an IMAX screen, this movie screen has the ability to adjust to the correct aspect ratios for given movie. This is a HUGE step up from IMAX imho if I am correct on this. When IMAX shows most modern day movies (not filmed in IMAX), IMAX has to show the movie in 16X9 format even if the movie was originally shot in 2.39 : 1. Which means IMAX is forced to CROP movies and present them incorrectly, which they've been doing for years. Most people don't know or realize when IMAX CROPS movies, the audience is missing out on half the film basically just so IMAX can "fit the screen", thus showing most widescreen movies shot in 2.39 : 1 incorrectly and not the way it was filmed by the director.

best to go with Dolby Atmos at AMC. Best sound and video quality (8K video resolution). Note: Not every AMC does have Dolby Atmos room. Charlotte NC does have AMC with Dolby Atmos but No Regal Cinema with RPX Dolby. I want to compare but cannot.

This theather-tech competition war is a lame trend. That doesnt sell tickets. Good movies do. Sadly, Hollywood is no longer in the make-great-films business. Its pure propaganda at this point. But that will soon come to an end.
