I'm doing a 30-day sugar detox to see what impact the sweet stuff has on my mental health. But what does science say about sugar and the brain? How toxic is sugar and is it really addictive as drugs like cocaine and nicotine? I meet nutrition expert Monique Aucoin of the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine to find out more.

Hello! I'm here from Bucci's channel. I actually din't expect this kind of content but I'm glad I watched your video. I once tried a diet without carbs and sugar, I was always starving and carving for those products. The good thing was that I started to feel better with my body, and that was absolutely awesome for my self esteem. Bad thing, I abandoned that diet and started eating really bad, because of school and stress... results: a year ago I had a gallblader surgery... which wasn't a pleasant experience at all. After watching your video I think I'm gonna try again to remove most of the sugar products from my diet. I'll be back in a month or so to tell you if I feel any changes :D

Hi Bryce, This is Ruchika and I have depression with ADD from past 11 years now. I happen to stumble at your video series and was really happy to see this initiative. Now about "sugar", I have tried this experiment of taking no sugar and then limiting it and it definitely works. But then as they say everything needs to be in moderation, I have found substitutes to refined sugar so that my brain keeps getting the right amount and doesn't crave for it whenever I feel low or depressed. What I did was first I eliminated sugar completely from my diet, by sugar here I mean refined sugar and products including the same. It felt good but slowly I experienced low moods once in 2 weeks and that got better by taking biscuits or muffin. Then I realized complete elimination is not good, rather let us take a healthy substitute, which was jaggery. Also, I make sure to eat dark chocolate which has more than 70% cocoa to curb this craving. Once you do it for some time, you will feel the difference in your mental health and will refrain from using refined sugar and consuming sweet products. I definitely do that as I can feel the difference. But then again it is ok to indulge in a piece of cake once in a while ;)

Hey Ruchika, thanks for watching and sharing this - and my apologies for taking so long to respond. A few other projects had me occupied. I ABSOLUTELY agree with you. Moderation is so so important. I too have found that while complete elimination can produce results in the short term, it is not realistically sustainable, particularly for us ADD/ADHDers, which I'm sure you can relate with! Finding appropriate substitutes like dark chocolate and natural sugars from fruits (i.e. in healthy smoothies) can really help us satiate those cravings and get us the DOPAMINE we crave so much.
