An introduction to my Ford SportKA SE, which I have owned for several years.
In this video I try to answer two questions:
• Is the SportKA a hot hatchback? Is it a fast Ford?
• Will the SportKA actually START?!
Also, I rank the SportKA against the other cars in my collection.. which are my current top 5?

I’d like to see the SportKa back on the road with a fresh M.O.T. I hate to see any car neglected and this little hatch deserves better.

Had an 2005 Sportka from brand new for 10 years and loved every minute of owning it. It could go up hills in 4th or 5th with the torque from the 1.6 making for effortless driving if you wanted, or work the gears for fun from the tight and brilliant gearbox. Never let me down but agree with the corrosion that eventually started.

Yes I feel so fortunate to have bought one in 2005 for £9,500 out of Torbay Ford (I live in Plymouth) and I maintained mine to the book. I will be watching your future work on it, and keen to see the underside (I spent lots of time hosing out the dirt from the arches on mine). I know it is all really easy and cheap to maintain as a future classic.

Good to see another one on the road soon. Unfortunately though mate you have to drop the tank on these to access the fuel pump. Unless you want to start cutting a hole which I wouldn’t do. Good luck with it and yes a cracking car. My 17 year old has just bought one he loves it

These are super fun to drive, can throw them around and they absolutely love it. Great little play thing that needs to be brought back to life. Them adverts though haha amazing, imagine the meltdown if the aired today 😂

I've got a one owner Sportka Se with all the extras on an 04 plate with 60k on, well it was one owner till I transferred it from her name to mine when she left! Still runs like a dream! Not been used for 13years. Still on it original rear tyres which are split to death... Putting through MOT this Friday. With new tyres obviously.

I think we’ve discussed this before mate but I love these and I think they’re going to be the next Ford to go up in money! I also would love one I don’t expect you to let me drive the Sierra when it’s done but you have to let me have a go in the SPORTKA 👀😂 keep up the great work mate-Callum.

Hi Andy another great video well done I had forgotten about the sport ka as the standard ka was everywhere and i think the new edge design has aged well and still looks fresh now especially in that colour I did like the street ka drop top as well both must be very rare now and would be great to see this one back on the road! The original ka seems to have vanished and haven’t seen one in sometime now but they are a car which makes you smile and have always liked the design of the interior I bet that one is a rocket! I bet it looks great with the focus mk1 RS! So glad you have saved that one good luck with getting it running all the best Daniel

As you say, all have pretty much vanished from the roads having once been a common sight on every street and every journey. I really like the SportKA and will try to get it back on the road this year. As you say, it looks nice parked next to the Focus RS and another car soon to join the collection... give me a month and I'll feature it! Thanks for watching.

The Sport Ka is a hot hatch. The raised eyebrows are because the Ka was always seen as a girly car. Yet they were brilliant in 1.3 form and the 1.6 gave it tge extra oomph to put it on a par with the Saxo VTR. Tin worm loves residing in fords of this era and its a shame. Love will grow for the Sportka

I have one in my garage for fixing-up. It was a hoot on the test drive and I knew it needed work. It's turning in to a weldathon but I really want to experience driving one of these properly.

Love them after a testdrive. Perfect to handle. Lots of fun. I think that rust will kill the most of them. A shame. It's a great car to drive.

It's a shame that they couldn't get a more powerful engine in both these and the standard KA. The chassis could certainly have managed it as they handled like they were on rails!

A family friend had one of these in the same colour / spec. Great little pocket rockets on short drives and B roads but these like the original Ford Puma’s really did rust. I got a 1.3 as a run around from Fords years ago and I did have a laugh driving it 🙂

They love to rust But damm they are fun to drive Amazing balance Loved driving them I think they deserve to be called hothatch Those Rocam 8v engines are pretty bullet proof Seen a couple of them with over 350.000km

Yeah i had a 1.3 with the crappy Endura engine but it could be properly chucked about. Bet the Sport is even better with the wider footprint and another 30bhp. You got the right colour for sure and quite a late plate too. Think they arrived on a 54.

Remember the pigeon ad being on tv but it’s the first I’ve seen the cat one. Dont see any kas now never mind sportkas. I like the look of them but as you say its the corrosion that’s the big worry with these

Thanks for the comment, I am glad the pigeon advert brought back a memory and as for the cat ad, well I am not even sure it made it to television! As you say, the original KAs are vanishing from our roads with rust the biggest culprit for their demise. There are still a few around and I am glad to have persevered this one... so far! Anything is possible, I've seen quite a few ka's with 2.0l zetec engines fitted. At castle combe there was even a 4x4 one with a cosworth yb engine and also another with a 3.0L Vauxhall V6 engine!!!!

Always fancied one to have a blast in. The rust just puts me off. They are all rusty. Dont know what metal ford was making them out of but the ka of 1996 should have had better rust proofing by the time it was killed in 2008.

I agree with you the little Ka sport will be a classic in the future ,if the rust can be held off long enough to keep one from falling apart all together. However i can't agree that this is a hot hatch. Hatch it is hot it's not. All is not lost though with a few easy mods it could possibly gain the missing hot. Lets face it that's what Ford were all about and why they still have such a cult following. I have the mark 3 Focus RS, now that's hot lol

I do suppose that in more modern terms the SportKA is not "hot"; however, wind back the clock a decade from early 2000s to the early 1990s and the SportKA's performance stats and credentials would have made it a hot hatchback... it is a question of time more so than performance. Well done for owning and enjoying the Mk3 Focus RS; I love mine... a "hyper hatch"! Thanks for watching.

Had one identical to this when it was a few years old. Had rust then, So can imagine how bad they must be now. Also would of been twice the car if it was fitted with the 1.7 zetec se engine out of the puma of which the sportka replaced. Bloody loved ours though 👍

Drove a couple of these back in the day when i worked in a used car dealership and they are great fun no question. Those adverts however, especially the cat one are horrible and really in bad taste.

Part exchanged my 87 Fiesta XR 2 for imperial blue sport ka for my then girlfriend.We broke up a few years later & she took the sport ka with her.Lol

I own a 1.0 2001 Ford ka techno edition is a basic edition but they were all gray and with sprinkles cloth interior, I bought it in 2013 with 120.000Kms and now it has 256.000 and is still running, the sad part is very bad rusted on the sides and the paint on these Ka's were easy to get burn by the sun.

@@cornishcarcollectors I moved to Cornwall from London about 10 years ago. I had to completely change my style of driving for the Cornish roads. I think little sporty cars are best suited to Cornish roads. But I love old jags which are not at all suited to small Cornish roads. I may have seen you when you done your round trip of Cornwall in the MG. Did you stop in Penzance ?

It's beautiful! One of the best cars ever made. Not even remotely joking either. Cars like this are illegal to make now. A good low milage model is already a modern classic. Pininfarina. Beautiful colour. 1.6 engine. Lovely rims. Weighs nothing. Handles well. Cheap. They're great! The best thing is that it has more road! It's so tiny, so when you smash it into a corner, you NEVER run out of road! They're go-karts. Genuinely. Road legal go-karts. And unfortunately they're dead now. It's over. Nobody will ever make a car like this again. It's illegal to make them now. Even the adverts are illegal (and that cat one was illegal then)! Wondeful stuff. They'll be extremely rare cars soon (they already are really), and they'll be much rarer in a few years. True classic.

@@takis4954 To make. There are a shocking number of regulations that came into effect since these were built. This is why all cars look the same now and have for the past 15 years. They're all massive bubble lozenges, full of crumple zones and airbags.

Thanks for the comment, I trust you enjoyed your SportKA. 11lts per 100km converts to c26 miles per gallon... probably about right if buzzing around a city, enjoying the SportKA with a bit of spirited driving. Thanks for watching.

Thanks for the comment. You are certainly correct in that they suffer badly with corrosion, but that does not mean they are not exciting and properly tuned in little hot hatches to drive - they’re a classic, return to form, hot hatch produced at a time when power and tech was all progressing. One of the last chances to experience proper hot hatch driving for not a lot of money. Thanks for watching the video.

Sorry i didnt want to condemn the mk1 kA..my sister had a KA 3 from 2 years old..when it was 5 yrs old with very low miles she had to sell it due to needing more space with twins...There was some bubling of the Panther black paint on o/s sill....as i rubbed it down we were left with a 3 inch hole ..lol...Apart from that was a great little car!..@@cornishcarcollectors
