Surprised myself and wrote nearly 2k words on the truck as well. Find it below. Also, I have more videos with a commercial angle with a dump truck and repairability chat with Dave Ives, one of Ford's chief engineers and a much longer off-road video. I'm traveling and expect those videos to come out next week. pickuptrucktalk.com/2020/01/first-drive-2020-ford-super-duty-godzilla-tremor-and-more/

Pickup Truck Plus SUV Talk What’s the best possible advertised MPG ( GAS ) version in 2wd? In-other-words what rear gear ratio would it have, and is that rear gear offered in the SRW F350? And what’s the payload difference between the F250 & F350? Also what’s the differences in the 250 & 350? Literally just a bigger axle and leaf springs OR wider rims, thicker frame, beefier trans, and trans cooler, stronger crankshaft, bigger radiator, hardened valve seats etc?
@Pickuptrucktalk
@Pickuptrucktalk 4 жыл бұрын
Good questions. 1. Since these are HD trucks, there is no advertised MPG. The EPA doesn't rate these trucks for fuel economy and Ford doesn't publish a number. My guess, again a guess, would be high teens with a 6.2L V8, 10-speed auto and 3.73 rear axle ratio. It would likely be pretty similar to a 7.3L V8, 10-speed auto and 3.55 rear axle ratio (note the 6.2L V8 doesn't come with a 3.55 rear axle). Both of those trucks would be SRW, regular cab, 2wd F_350. 2. Payload differences on 250 vs 350 - there is a massive chart here (media.ford.com/content/dam/fordmedia/North%20America/US/product/2020/f-series-super-duty/2020-Super-Duty-Tech-Specs.pdf) see pages 5-6 listing all the payload differences. It is so dependent on how you configure the truck and impossible to have a simple answer. 3. Engineering difference - frames are the same, engines are the same, radiator is the same. It is really about the rear axle, stronger springs to handle the additional load. I'm sure there could be a driveshaft and U-joint difference as well and I'd need to follow up with Ford on that. But, typically, the way you add additional towing and payload to a truck is through the springs and rear axle. Those are the main differences between the F-350 and F-250. The trucks are pretty much identical everywhere else. Thanks for watching!

Pickup Truck Plus SUV Talk Thanks! Would you know all if any of the mechanical & suspension updates/upgrades on the new Ford F-150 5.0 besides the 10-speed trans? Tim, if you had to pick a 1/2 ton 2wd Truck with a Naturally Aspirated motor that rode the smoothest and got the best HWY MPG’s 20+ while still having at least a 1,800 pound payload what would you choose? Ford 5.0 with the smallest/lowest rear gear ratio Tundra with a V6- if they still offer a V-6 Chevy Silverado 4.3 Dodge Ram with the 3.6 Ford F-150 with a 3.7 V6 Naturally Aspirated Chevy Silverado 5.3 with the smallest/lowest rear gear ratio Chevys Turbo 4 Cylinder Silverado seems tempting and fun but I wonder what’s the advantages over the 4.3? Faster? Also have you ever driven the F-150 2.7 Ecoboost? Reliability seems sketchy from what I’ve seen in the past unless they’ve done some updates/upgrades
@Pickuptrucktalk
@Pickuptrucktalk 4 жыл бұрын
Ok. Let's see. 1. There is a new F-150 coming out later this year. No details yet. However, there should be ZERO differences between the suspension with different engines. They simply swap in a different engine on the assembly line. 2. The 4.3L V6 Chevy, 3.3L V6 Ford are really for work truck customers. In fact, the Chevy you can't get in any trim besides work truck and I was recently at a Ford dealer who told me he doesn't even bother ordering the 3.3L V6 because nobody is buying it. They are buying the 2.7L turbo 6 instead. 3. The Sierra and Ram trucks ride the smoothest. They also come in non-turbo and the MPG differences are within 1 MPG of each other. Those are EPA numbers and in real-world driving, I bet there is really about zero difference. It seems like you don't want a turbo, but you want good HWY MPG and a fun to drive truck. Sorry, you can't do it. The small displacement turbo engines are faster, more fun to drive and return better fuel economy than a naturally aspirated engine. That's why everyone is building them. Hope that helps.

My 1997 7.3l PowerStroke E450 15 mpg @ 14000lbs @ 55mph! Ford should have built SuperDuty & E350/450 Hybrid & Full electric instead of gas guzzler 7.3l. In 2012 Ford dropped Escape Hybrid, Lexus/Toyota took full advantage. Ford Repeat in SuperDuty market, now 10+yrs behind. So while Fords new 7.3l @ 3-8mpg loaded, competition will be waving passing by the 7.3l owners stopped refueling, in their new fuel efficient HD Hybrid, Full Electric or fuel cell HD Trucks.

I like how it sounds, i like the 10 speed, i like how it looks, but damn... that's cringeworthy when it nearly flips in the twisty ditch! My Power Wagon could go through that with none of the craziness. The front of the Ford is too rigid. I just don't see it ever STUFFING 37 inch tires all the way up in the wells like my Wagon can. If anyone in Nebraska, Wyoming, or Colorado has a Tremor and wants to go hit some trails, crawling and rock wheeling, leave me a comment. The Tremor intrigues me, and I would love to go wheeling together to compare the Tremor capabilities with my 16 PW.

Tim, how does the BLIS work with a trailer? How does the radar signal go around the front corner of the trailer to "see" down the side of the trailer? many trailers are wider than the truck is .
@Pickuptrucktalk

I think it comes down to programming the trailer into the system. The BLIS uses this information to determine the blind spot radius, then shoots out radar appropriately to determine blind spots. The radar shoots out pretty wide.

All the endless chatter about trim and trim levels. It's all just pure profit for Ford. None of it makes for a better or faster truck and all those electronic options add unnecessary cost and unreliability. The auto makers are trying to make vehicles that require no thought on the part of the driver. It's bad enough that Ford decided to make cheap aluminum trucks, which had nothing to do with weight savings. Just more profit. My old Volkswagen bugs could maneuver through most of that in the videos! The only thing that is good about newer trucks is the locking rear axle. All the rest is fluff.

@@joefell7845 I guess that is why they started making beer cans out of aluminum instead of steel, 'cause they are stronger!! From watching the Ford assembly line, there are about 6 workers, the rest are robots and if something goes awry just melt it down and start over. Cheaper than steel bodies. I also suspect your semi has a heavy cast aluminum bumper, and heavy fenders, otherwise the moose is crashing through. (I wouldn't brag about running over moose). There has been guys around here rue the day when their gooseneck hitch slides off the ball and punches right through their military grade aluminum bed. Military grade beer can. (It wouldn't keep me from buying a Ford :) Because of their hp and reliability but not the aluminum.) P.S. Aluminum doesn't rust but it corrodes.
