I would suggest the influence of Jung in this space. Carl Jung's exploration of the symbolic world is a central theme in his work, particularly in his theories of the collective unconscious and archetypes. Here are some key points he made about the symbolic world: 1. **Symbols as the Language of the Unconscious**: Jung believed that symbols are the natural language of the unconscious mind. They arise spontaneously in dreams, fantasies, and cultural myths, representing deeper, often unrecognized parts of the psyche. 2. **Archetypes**: Jung introduced the concept of archetypes, which are innate, universal symbols and themes that recur across different cultures and epochs. Examples include the Hero, the Mother, the Wise Old Man, and the Shadow. These archetypes are fundamental structures of the human psyche and are expressed through symbolic imagery. 3. **Collective Unconscious**: According to Jung, the collective unconscious is a part of the unconscious mind shared by all human beings, housing the archetypes. The symbolic world is a way for individuals to access this collective heritage and connect with the deeper layers of their psyche. 4. **Individuation Process**: Jung described individuation as the process of becoming whole by integrating different parts of the psyche, including those revealed through symbols. By understanding and assimilating symbolic content, individuals can achieve personal growth and self-realization. 5. **Cultural and Personal Symbols**: Jung emphasized that while some symbols have universal meanings (archetypes), others are personal and specific to an individual's life experiences. Both types of symbols are important for understanding the self and the world. 6. **Transformation and Healing**: Jung believed that engaging with the symbolic world could lead to transformation and healing. Symbols carry a transformative power that can guide individuals through psychological crises and towards a more balanced and integrated state of being. In summary, Carl Jung viewed the symbolic world as a vital means of understanding and navigating the depths of the human psyche, bridging the personal and collective dimensions of the unconscious. Chat GPT3.5 ** Carl Jung, the renowned Swiss psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, had profound insights into the symbolic world. Let's explore some of his perspectives: 1. **Symbolism as Bridges**: - Jung viewed symbols as more than mere signs or representations. To him, a symbol was a dynamic entity that encapsulated both the known (conscious) and the unknown (unconscious) aspects of our psyche. - These symbols act as bridges, connecting two realities that would otherwise remain isolated¹. 2. **The Unconscious and Symbols**: - Jung believed that the unconscious communicates through symbols and images. - Dreams, active imagination, and creative expression allow us to explore these symbolic messages. - The process of **individuation** involves engaging with and interpreting these symbols to gain insight into our unconscious motivations and conflicts². 3. **Collective Unconscious and Archetypes**: - According to Jung, the **collective unconscious** is a universal dimension of the psyche shared by all human beings. - It contains **archetypes**, symbols, and patterns that shape our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, often without our conscious awareness⁴. In summary, Jung's perspective on symbolism emphasizes its transformative power and its role in connecting our conscious and unconscious realms. Symbols serve as gateways to deeper understanding and self-discovery¹²⁴. Jung is all over the place and not very helpful. He is an explosion of symbolic archetypes, he is all over the place, he is like the blind man who sees people that look like trees everywhere till Christ orders his vision, then he can see again. Because of that Jung is simply not that deep either, because he only notices the surface and correlations between the surfaces. The archetypes are somewhat helpful but completely deracinated from where the belong and their proper context in order to understand what they really mean.

With regard to Dostoyevsky's "beauty will save the world," my understanding is that this is a view expressed by the "chief demon" Stepan in the novel, "Demons." It's not a position that is fully articulated, but comes up in his first public lecture where he is derided by the socialist intellectuals for his claim that "boots are lower than Pushkin" and where he also started declaring the rights of art. In his final lecture, which he was prevented from completing, he goes off on how nothing can stand--not even science--without beauty.

I don't know in which way Dostoevsky used the phrase but Solzhenitsyn definitely used it in the way people understand it now. Probably it was Solzhenitsyn who popularized it, but I don't know that either. What a beautiful sentence.

I read the novel a couple months. It's the protagonist prince Mishkin who says the quote. It comes up a couple times, once when he is about to have an epileptic fit. Other characters in the novel ask what he means by the phrase. "Do you mean Christ when you speak of beauty? How can you think Christ will save the world?" That's not a direct quote but it is the idea conveyed.

@@maximosmagyar9653 Thanks for the precision. I didn't mean to suggest that it wasn't uttered in The Idiot, only that it is taken up in a more fulsome (but still cryptic) way in Demons. Another example of this is the statement: Atheism is a thought lackey. This is something that Shatov utters but its fuller expression comes in The Brothers where its underlying sentiment is embodied by Smerdyakov and Ivan, especially in his vision of the Devil. A fascinating thing with the Idiot is that Aglaya warns the Prince against prattling on about one of his high minded topics, like "art will change the world." This comes after warning him about keeping clear of the Chinese vase at the party they're planning... it's a great foreboding of the disaster that will ensue!

I see that I misquoted Aglaya above. She says the relevant phrase : "beauty will save the world" (Part 3, chapter 6, p. 526 of the Vintage edition, 2001).

Rohlin aspires that through the dissemination of Johnathan Pageau's fictional stories, individuals will be immersed in redemptive beauty, while a Christian's aspiration lies in propagating the historical gospel of Jesus Christ, thereby ushering in God's salvific spirit. The contrast between the two is truly captivating, to the point where you have to ask: is this merely an innovative way to reinvigorate culture or an unintentional replacement for the gospel? I think in the case of the latter, contrary to Rohlin's sentiment, we must ensure we are not unintentionally replacing the truth with fiction. If that does become the case, then Johnathan's reluctance to ascend to guruship is unavoidable, as the pattern is greater than the individual will. So whether it's salvation through the tale of a fairy or Estuary, be careful that you don't find yourself in competition with the King of Glory.

I think you are misunderstanding the objective of Richard and Jonathan’s work. You seem to believe there is some sort of opposition between their work and the gospel, which is really strange. The three transcendentals of truth, goodness, and beauty have always been regarded as important by christian theologians and philosophers. Beauty is not only important but *essential*. The lack of experiencing the beautiful can actually cause a sort of impairment to the mind and the soul. The ancient Greeks had a name for it, Apeirokalia. “The Greeks called it *apeirokalia.* It means simply ‘the lack of experience of the most beautiful things’. By this term it was understood that the individual who, in certain stages of his development, had been deprived of certain interior experiences that woke on him the desire for beauty, goodness, and truth, would never be able to understand the conversations of the sages, no matter how much effort he put in learning Sciences, Letters and Rhetoric. Plato, for instance, would say that this man is a prisoner of the cave. Aristotle, in a more technical language, would say that rites are not intended for the transmission of specific teachings to men, but to cause on their soul a *deep impression.* Anyone who is aware of the importance Aristotle gives to the imaginative impressions will understand the extreme seriousness of what he means: these impressions performed upon the soul an illuminating and structuring impact. In their absence, intelligence obscurely drifts about the multitude of sensible data, without grasping the symbolic nexus which, bridging the gap between abstractions and reality, prevents our reasoning from dissolving into a maddening combinatory of empty syllogisms - the pedant expressions of the impotence to know.” olavodecarvalho.org/apeirokalia/

@@cinfuegowaters9552 The divine beauty of God is the source of all true beauty, and where the gospel is not proclaimed, that beauty remains absent. Any narratives that do not explicitly convey the gospel only serve to divert glory away from Jesus and towards other men. No story can imitate the beauty of the gospel without inevitably distorting it. This may seem too fundamentalist for some, but that is the essence of Christianity. Perhaps Christians are exploring other avenues because they have not been taught the true gospel, which includes a single-natured human savior. As a Biblical Unitarian, I believe this is a significant part of the issue.

Jonathan Pageau is an Orthodox Christian so he understands what the Gospel of Christ is and what does and doesn't compete with it. These patterns are in every memorable story passed down through the ages including the Gospel story. In fact, just as symbolic patterns began with Christ as Creator of all so these patterns resolve in Him or find their completeness in Him as the Gospel story reveals. Symbolic patterns then are intended to lead you to an encounter with Christ as long as you are open to such. Jonathan does not present stories as competeing with or replacing the Gospel, in fact he often points to the Gospel and shows how these patterns reveal Him as the King of Glory.
