Problem here is the weather. I'm from Ireland and have been in the water past few days, often. It's been cloudy with the occasional patch of sun. I'm from the 'sunny' south east and it hasn't been a full clear day of blue skies in at least week or so. Galway is usually worse because the west coast gets more rain. The video shows a very nice day with clear blue skies. The problem is that the article doesn't give a specific time and date for the recording. It just says 'A local Galway fishermen has shared a hair-raising video he captured of what appears to be a shark basking in the waters off the Galway coast. John McGloin, who took the video, was fishing off the coast of Connemara with his friend Joao Rosa when a Great White Shark approached their boat and got incredibly close. The shark lingered in the area for a few minutes before heading off, leaving the fishermen at a loss for words after the rare encounter.' I was also listening for irish accents on the video but they don't really talk for long enough to confirm that. (although it could be Irish people on holidays) but it would at least show it was an irish person's footage. Also it says he is with his friend 'Joao'. That is a Portuguese name. Not impossible to have a Portuguese and Irishman on a boat together in Galway but it does make me think that this could be filmed in Portugal. It's exciting but that footage really needs to be verified and authenticated ASAP

100% that’s a pointer. I’m a lifelong hardcore small boat fisherman in South Australia and have had plenty of encounters with great whites. That’s a great white…..no doubt. Posture, attitude, fins and the colour are enough to say it’s a great white. Doesn’t look like a huge one. Maybe 9-10 feet or so. Wonder if it was filmed off Ireland for sure???? Like you say if that video was from here there’s only one culprit. We get short fin makos here as well but they tend to appear more dark and cobalt blue around the boat. Also they tend to be moving faster and not gliding like that shark. Thanks for sharing this video. 👍

Galway Beo means Galway Live. Its a regional/county news site. Like other county news sites they have a propensity to exaggerate news like "heatwave coming" and its 18 degrees cloudy and windy. That being said, i have swam off places like Silver Strand Beach in Galway which have warm currents mixed with cold. It can feel like swimming in a jacuzzi to a cool bath. This could be a huge source of churning up nutrients for fish and given the size of the shark in the video, sharks at that size (3m) tend to feed on fish but are in the transition stage.

The source is just a local site aimed at local people, in the way local newspapers used to do, so it will be low budget with minimal staff. I think it could be a juvenile great white and the waters are influenced by the Gulf stream in that area too. I used to live in the county below, Clare, and swam regularly in the sea off the west coast.

Marine environmental scientist here - The animal does indeed appear to be a potential GW however it could equally be a short finned mako which as you stated are known off the coast of Ireland. Also, nobody has verified the time or location this video was shot. It is only "claimed" to be at that time and place. Nobody seems to have geolocated its time and place, which information should be locked into the metadata. Another person in the video is also filming it, but we have not seen that footage or metadata. The weather looks bright and clear and warm, and the seas very clear. Was this genuinely filmed where and when was claimed? There are two scientific axioms which should be at play here... first is that extraordinary claims require clear evidence which is difficult to dispute. The second is occam's razor, which states that the simplest explanation tends to be the most accurate. So we have to ask ourselves two questions (i) Is this evidence clear, compelling, and difficult to dispute? (ii) Which is more likely (a) that a species of shark never before documented in British waters has just been spotted, in waters replete with extensive fishing fleets, marine scientists, marine engineers, and a Navy which routinely surveys the waters and fisheries, all of whom would be very able to document an observed GW; or (b) It is a GW but the claimed location is false and so this is a hoax? --- More evidence is required. The skipper of the boat's logs and position data from navigation devices. The other videos and other recordings of the event. etc. Until then, I am unconvinced.

@WolfricLupus
@WolfricLupus 29 күн бұрын
@@jayspillane990 Apologies, yes you are correct. Regarding politics. However I am also correct scientifically because it is the waters off the British Isles, which is a term that is not political in origin but the correct and true geological and geographical name for the archipelago of islands north west of mainland Europe, which includes Shetland in the north through to Isles of Scilly in the south-west and including the Isle of Man, and the island of Eire to the west. You can check out the term "British Isles" in wikipedia if you don't believe me. And in the context of commentary on this video, to say "Irish waters" would have been to limit my observation to a relatively small area of water, but to say "British waters" is to remain scientific and also to greatly open up the area of water that is in the discussion.

It’s quite scary the thought of possible Sharks now in our waters, also if they have really been sighted in our waters & that we come to the conclusion that they do reside in our waters…..then there wold also be NO Doub’t that they would also be in Spanish waters too, As Spain’s waters are even more warmer than our waters during there extremely hot summers!☀️🔥 I’m Only really concerned about the Spanish waters as I usually travel to Spain-(Ibiza mainly) once per year if I can! & sometimes take a dip in the sea, As I used to be a frequent beach goer!!!

I live about 40ft from the ocean on the west coast of Ireland and have found freshly chomped seals. I’m convinced they’re out there. Not in great numbers as the food supply isn’t here.

Umm there's approx 1.5 to 2 million fur seals off of s,Africa, grey seals are just a portion of different breeds. With nearly 2m seals plus all the other sea food they eat it puts the Orkney islands shetlands to shame . @@deadmanwalking1930

Even if it is a juvenile GWS without a firm confirmation of location it is piss and wind. If I was filming that shark I would be keen to show my plotter or land marks in the same shot without any editing. It could well be genuine but so many cranks out there that want their 5 mins of fame.

I'd say that's definitely a White shark. A small one probably 3 meters but it looks like one for sure. If only we'd managed to see it's face. It's either a White or a Mako but the body shape and build looks like a white instead of a Mako.

Seems to be a lot of debate of this subject. Great white like the waters around the UK, that is a white shark, albeit not a large, one, looks around 13 foot. I was in the Royal Marines, i've swam and dived in the most waters, many times in the UK, and i've encountered many sharks in British Waters, including White Sharks, and to be honest we were more concerned about the stopwatch than the shark.

The fact that he hasn’t released the footage makes me suspicious. People in the UK want GWS off their coast SOOO bad for some reason. I’m sure they’ll be there eventually with all the seals and the changing seas temps. I’m sure there have been some there or close by, but the fact that there’s no definitive video evidence is telling. Within 5 years I feel they’ll finally have actual proof off the coast… most likely this area of western Ireland since it’s closest to the east coast U.S. whites and whites in Canadian waters. The white shark population here in cape cod has always been a thing but the population is increasing at a rapid rate. It shows that more and more are moving further north.
