One day in Afghanistan, en route to a French base, one of our HMMWVs sprang a small leak in an inaccessible corner of the radiator. We limped into the base, took it to a mechanic, who took a look at the hole, shook his head, and said he was going to go to the kitchen to get an egg. After I translated this for my lads, I was met with stunned looks. "What is he going to do with an egg?" "Have you never heard of an egg to plug a radiator?" "No...." I was beginning to wonder if it was a lost art or just a european thing, I had never considered it possible it was an arcane piece of knowledge not commonly known. You have redeemed my faith. And yes, the egg did get us the two hours back home where we could then replace the radiator. Looking forward to seeing the upgraded vehicle at Aquino.

You should do more videos with the tank museum. They could use the promotion. God knows they are putting great videos out about maintaining their tanks and their Canadian history and nobody in Canada seems to pay attention or know about it. Maybe work out a deal where you come out and "volunteer" sometimes and film it to put oin your channel as a cross promotion? Its the largest collection of working tanks in North America and it should be something ALL Canadians should be proud of and KNOW about. I myself didn't know they existed until the Cheiftan did a vid about them a couple years ago. I'd go there at least once a month if I lived in Ontario. Besides how cool would it be to work on some of that heavy iron once in a while?

When they said the M4 Sherman was reliable they were not lieing. Thats a 75 year old suspension and transmission still working perfectly fine. I remember how I once drove a 20 year old opel astra and the suspension litteraly fell apart as I drove (the back left suspension broke threw the chassis, wasn't pritty). The fact that this works SO well after all that time is incredible.

If you replace the cab, you should put something like a camper trailer or RV on top of it. Seems a little bit of a waste to have something that can go anywhere and just have a dinky little truck on top of it. With semi truck cab airbags all the way around, those big cushioned semi truck seats in the front, you have something you can take deep into the woods and might not cause butt devastation the entire journey. Or maybe an old boat, and even connect a big wooden ship wheel to the steering system and stand up on the deck dressed like a pirate.

My welding instructor calls this value added engineering. It uses existing materials or a different technique to accomplish the same task at a savings. Kind of like the Zimmerman powerplant that was supposed to be nuclear but switched to coal firing before completion in the 80's.

I would get rid of the truck frame, make standoffs on the tank itself to mount the body and box, have the body nearly flush with the cross members, good way to reduce weight and give it a better profile. Also add access hatches in the box and in the cab in front of the seats for easy repairs. I don't see the need for a full floor under the tank so maybe get rid of that too and just do some skid plates?

If my memory serves me right that is, as I said 1987-89 and I was a kid, LOL and so aswell have no clue at whoever built it or what happened to it. But this thing if yours definitely brought back the memory of it. As a young kid back then I was always was like I want to drive that! LOL Thanks for sharing!

You have a NAPCO spar carrier base, they called them the “M4A3”, but they’re a hodgepodge of parts from whatever was available in the 60’s. They were used to carry a logging machine used around the world, the “steel spar yarder”. They usually ended up with steel tires on the bogie wheels, because the rubber didn’t last long carrying twice the weight it was intended to carry. The springs are often broken, as well. When the yarders eventually got scrapped, the carrier was often left intact, “because it’s a tank!” Cabs were put on them, different motors, cranes, etc. The hull is usually mild steel, with the exception of the cast armour differential housing. Madill never built these, they bought the carrier pre assembled from NAPCO. The same carrier was used by Skagit, of Sedro Wooley Washington, and Tyee Machinery Works in Vancouver, BC. Originally they were powered by a horizontal engine on the deck, through a torque converter, power take off, angle drive, and a down drive to the original transmission. First gear was usually disabled, as the big diesel, combined with the 60 ton weight, put too much strain on the final drives in 1st. gear.

The "egg trick" was certainly pretty common knowledge here in Scotland in the '80s but I never heard of the pepper/coffee thing. I was always told only to use the egg if you were actually going to replace the radiator, as it would often cause the opposite effect and block the rad passages. In those days, I ran my vehicles on scrapyard parts and the egg would work for long enough for a radiator to appear in the yard, sometimes a good few months.😁 Great episode Rich, fun and educational in equal parts.✔ Have to admit though, I was pretty surprised at your smart decision at the bridge.😂 Cheers for now.

The Square-body C/K chassis fitted to a tank chassis is the coolest thing. Nothing else on top of the tank hull will be cooler than the C/K, and it should be kept that way, unless you figure out some way to make whatever is mounted on top easily (relatively speaking) interchangeable modules. For instance, The C/K, and a KW W900, retro Cadillac hearse body, stretched 6-8 door Suburban chassis "Suburbanator", old deuce and a half chassis, etc

In the mid 60's, there was a publication named "My Little Salesman". It was for buying specialized equipment in the Pacific Northwest. There was an ad for refurbished tank drivetrains for logging equipment. Maybe this is one of those. Think the ad said they were M48 tank chassis.

My uncle was blown out of one of these on one of the Pacific Islands We took during the war, I am ashamed to say I don't know which island. He laid on the beach for three days before they knew He was still alive. This was a very interesting video to watch. He was the turret gunner I am told.

My father was a tank commander in the Essex Regiment (Tank) back in the 50'-60s. He'd have loved to see this. As a kid back then I remember going to the different bases where they trained. I have a lot of the stuff he kept from his time in the Army. One thing I have is a training manual for the M4.

Add it to tier 2 USA light tanks with a bed mounted dual 50 cal. Give it no hit points and no armor and make it a fun little combat car style vehicle. Call it the Deboss M4 prot. I would play it!
