I love your reaction to this. As soon as they mentioned Costa Rica I knew that they were talking about you guys! I nearly screamed!!! I couldn’t wait to see your reaction! I desperately wish I had the money to go…but especially if they go! I’ve gone through deconstruction too…although I wasn’t raised in a high demand religion (family are Episcopalian…it still wasn’t easy. They worry. It’s a process. But I never worried about loosing them and *most* friends). I’d love to speak with them both (especially as I live in an area where I may meet an open minded Christian I could fall in love with…most people here are at least somewhat religious…or spiritual. Have you considered holding a lottery for a spot or two on the trip…any money made after the lottery (to go to cost of trip) could go to a charity for helping people get therapy for religious trauma? Who’ve left polygamy? (Teacher’s makes jack-sh*t…it’s so frustrating). I have so much hope…regardless of where Bethany lands with this…that her heart and mind will go to accept LGBTQ people (etc). Maybe she’ll meet and befriend some, listen to their stories, etc. and sit with it. I know when I did, I learned a great deal. I’d hand her copies of Rachel Heald Evan’s books too (she was a friend I met after her 2nd book. We shared wine and spoke some after a conference during my deconstruction. I landed on one side and she landed in the Liberal Christian side). She was an AMAZING human being who is gone way too soon. So if Dav and Bethany see this…check her books out…especially Searching for Sunday. You may not agree with it all, but what she had today is incredibly beautiful. I know fairly Conservative Christians who love them, as well as agnostics and atheists. Her last book is pretty beautiful too. All are humorous and well written. I once heard that true intelligence is the ability to change your mind on an issue when presented with new information. Clearly both are quite intelligent. And I’m rooting for them both…as well as their marriage! (I’ve never wanted to see them fail, just disagreed and found some content harmful.) While I’ve been skeptical about their marriage. I’m so glad they’ve (obviously) gotten therapy and depended the emotionally connection (which appears incredibly deep. There is no way they could act that. I doubt any Oscar award winning actor could). I may disagree with her on many issues, but she is a “ride or die” for Dav and I respect the hell out of that. I only hope I can find someone to have that sort of intimacy with! I hope we see more of this, mixed faith (with their kids privacy in mind) on their channel.

I agree, I think Bethany has really shown herself to be a supportive and loving partner. And I feel like just watching her content or some of Dav’s comments separately have never really gotten this dynamic across so effectively as in this video. Being able to deconstruct in a safe environment together, regardless of where they land, is the absolute best thing that someone in their position could hope for. I think it’s just lovely that they are continuing to hold to each other as they work through all of this. And I think however their faiths end up they will probably be healthier for having hashed these things out and redevoted themselves to each other in a non-conditional sort of way.

@@MountainPearls I grew up in Quaker community & I’ve always found it to be an incredibly welcoming and loving place (though obviously your mileage may vary depending on the meeting & conference). I’m trans and queer & my meeting has been affirming, and I’ve never felt the need to leave. There’s also a commitment to social justice in Quaker community that I really appreciated growing up & think has definitely shaped my activism as an adult. I love the testimonies of integrity, equality, stewardship, community, and simplicity, though the peace testimony is not always for me personally. I like that Quakerism isn’t so much an organized religion as a faith & is anti-hierarchical at its core. Like the LDS, the Society of Friends believes in continuing revelation, but anyone can receive it, because we all have “that of God” inside us (this is the idea of the “Spirit” moving someone to speak during Meeting for Worship). I’ve found that the Quaker idea of “that of God in everyone” works well with agnosticism and atheism, because it can be elided to “there is something good and worthwhile in every person.” In my experience, FGC Quakers are very open to people practicing multiple faiths and also attending meeting, or being non-religious entirely. I know that’s a lot, hope it helps!!

Just fyi, the hot seat cryptic thing is a Mennonite thing, not quaker. And quakers have 2 very different groups.... in the US there's a very puritanical version and in the uk it's a much more open non judgmental group.

Bethany, I have always resided in the commentary side of KZfaq and only knew of you through weird hate-filled rants about a "crazy, harmful Mormon lady ruining children on the internet". Finding this channel recently and hearing Sam and Tanner approach you with such empathy really turned around my view 180°. You mean the woman who left the only woman of color invited from photos, made her feel uncomfortable and then doubled down and made multiple posts refusing accountability and then she completely changed her platform because she was called out for bigotry and had to make herself the victim? I would say making yourself a victim in a case where you’re called out for racist behavior, whether it was on purpose or not, is not bridging any gaps or helping any positive community. It’s actually doubling down on fundamentalism, showing that your goal was really proselytizing your own concepts and ideas and not actually doing the work.

@@Ravemclaw I think we should still give credit to P&M. Their video was also meaningful and helpful, especially since they included Dav and facilitated tough discussions. I don't share their views and didn't agree with some of the things they said on the video, but the video still definitely helped humanize all of them, especially Bethany.
