My super melodramatic first tattoo was the garment “knee mark” stitching with a redwood tree growing out of it because the knee mark is a reminder to bow/kneel and redwoods always grow upwards and never bend while also being older than dinosaurs and religion 🤗

I’m convinced the movie Tangled is actually about a girl leaving the Mormon church.

I wore garment tops under my bra for about 2 years because that’s how my mom told me to do it. Then I had my first baby and stopped because it was too hard to breastfeed him that way. I never switched back because it was too weird. I felt guilty about that for a while. But then brave women started talking about their garment preferences and I found out I wasn’t the only one being “rebellious.” After leaving the church I got to buy regular women’s underwear at the same time my trans friend was buying hers. That was fun. We got to get used to our new underwear at the same time.

I went through the temple for the first time in 1992, and back then, they were still telling women to wear the garment top under their bra. At the time, I was a college student, and i used to literally have nightmares about being in chemistry class, getting splashed with a chemical and having to immediately strip and rinse and my classmates seeing the hideous garment/bra combo. When we left the church in 2013, it felt so scandalous to ditch our garments. The first time my mother-in-law realized we weren't wearing them, she started crying, so upset and worried for what that meant for our eternal salvation. It took several months before I wore a sleeveless shirt to the gym for the first time. I felt like I was going to burst into flames. I'd never been allowed to wear sleeveless shirts growing up, and it took a long time to break the fear and shame associated with that bit of bare skin. Sleeveless tops are now my favorite everyday wear, and I'm happy to say (at age 50), I just bought my first crop tops and super mini skirt.

The thing I thought was so interesting about magic undies was that Margaret Atwood used them (and other religions' sacred clothing) as inspiration for the clothing in The Handmaid's Tale.

I remember going through temple prep class with my husband. The wife in the couple leading the class got emotional talking about someone getting burns all over their body except where their garments were. I guess the face I made was t what she was expecting because she asked me if I was okay. I never believed the “protection from fire” thing. I’m a seamstress. A LOT of fabrics now contain, or are coated in, flame retardants. Especially fabrics used for underwear or pajamas. It’s to the point where if children’s pajamas don’t contain flame retardant, you have to include a tag that warns to keep the clothing away from flame.

I had the same realization about how members always shit on the Catholic baptism being a sprinkle of water and yet have no problem with the temple ceremony doing literally the same thing a couple months ago. I am so glad you brought attention to this! It is so crazy to me that I didn't realize it sooner.

The day I got endowed I literally sharted myself at the Applebees across the street during our “celebration” lunch. I had worn garments for what… like 2 hours?? Makes me laugh so hard now when I think about it. 🤣🤣

This reminds me a lot of the Catholic version of this, which is the Brown Scapular. It is necklace promises that, if you pray the rosary every day while wearing it and die with it on, Mary will 100% save you from hell, no matter how bad you are. It used to be a garment but now is just a small necklace. When I was Catholic, I was afraid to take it off in the shower in case I died in the shower and was sent to hell.

Lume whole-body deodorant is headquartered in Utah, and now I’m wondering if that’s partially because so many people in Utah probably have big B.O. problems from having to wear hot, non-breathable garments in the Utah heat. (They also just came out with a line of scents for men under a different name, because we can’t expect men to buy products with a ‘feminine’ sounding name, I guess, which also tracks with Utah)

Were garments a shelf breaker for anyone else? I grew up not far from the coast in California, but served my mission in the deep south. Going from temperate Coastal California to sweatbox sauna gulf coast in a shirt and tie with garments and riding a bike all day was MISERABLE. Also the fact that none of the people down there had any interest in the chuch was a complete morale killer.

I only went 3-4 times, too. So, yeah, definitely not enough time to learn the script. In Mormon heaven, I’m relying HEAVILY on the full restoration of memory 😅

This fukin thing has been a disaster for my mental health. It's never been OK to me that the church thought it owned my body. It's always felt coercive to wear. I can't imagine what it must be like for people with female anatomy. If I get accepted by voc rehab, they'll pay for student housing. Can't wait

I think this is just a big FU to the women of the church. Basically a smack down for the previous few weeks of women pushing back on instagram. The church’s response was basically saying women you aren’t doing the garment right, focus on your ineptitude and unfaithfulness. I know it affects men too but definitely affects women more.

I’m a nomo, and a homo. I never even heard about the Mormon church or garments until I was 20. Our lds neighbor would come over to our totally lesbian house to smoke cigarettes and drink coffee. I was very surprised when I saw her garments, under her bra. She explained they were kinda like a wedding ring, to remind you of your vows. It definitely sparked my life long interest in the lds church. They never tried to recruit us, of course, though her daughters would take ours to their ward,and gave her a signed Book of Mormon.

Your body really does look out for you sometimes. I’ve looked back over the years and realized my frequent “random” stomach aches happened whenever I was being coerced or emotionally manipulated. I never had a problem with the actual temple ceremonies when I was in. I remember my first time just soaking it in and trying to connect the dots where I could. But I ALSO remember being relieved when there was no actual nakedness in the films or in the ordinances (endowed in 2015, if I'm remembering right). And I also remember half-jokingly telling my parents that "if we have to dress like this in Heaven, I don't want to go." The robe was always falling off my tiny shoulders, the nylon stockings were always itchy, and the veil tied against my glasses always made my head hurt a little. The only parts I ever loved about the temple attire were the slip and dress I got to pick out to put everything on top of. Beyond that, I think my first time through was the only time I was ever even sort of at ease, and that was just because I knew I would have guidance and understanding as a new initiate. While the teachings didn't bother me much, I went less and less over time because, mechanically, the only part of the endowment session that didn't have me clenching my sweaty hands in anticipation of the next thing I needed to do was the Celestial Room. Even then we'd only spend a few minutes in there before leaving. Every time I exited the temple, it would feel like I could sit up straight and actually breathe fully again. Now that I have so much more context, and I can appreciate it for what it was, both the good and the bad. It took me several months to feel okay taking off my garments, but when I finally did, I feel like I finally got a chance to just be a body for once. I'm never going back anyway, but if I did I'd be at a loss because the caranessa got too itchy and not insulating enough for me and they stopped making the dri-lux. X)

I hate garments so bad! When i was first married i would sneak regular panties in my work bag and change the second i got to work then after work i would workout so i got away with only wearing them at night sometimes. Fast forward went inactive totally stopped wearing them and got divorced. After the divorce for some odd reason became active again decided to try to go back to the temple. Of course they wouldn't give me the recommend until i could wear them 24/7 🙄for couple months. I thoght surley they have improved them last 8 years. Nope nope and nope. I tired to wear them i remember going on a walk it was maybe 70 outside. I got so hot at the 3/4 miles in i literally jumped in some bushes (it was a country road) and took them off! Lol😂 i never did go back to the temple and now inactive. I enjoy my morning coffee everyday and dont worry about making it into a segregated heaven.

My dad had an angle grinder explode in his hand while cutting with it. Part of his hand was partially severed and he got three large cuts on his chest. To this day he claims the only reason he survived is that he had his garments on.

When I was a Mormon yrs ago I lived in an apartment and was doing laundry I had may garments stolen and thinking back maybe it was for the best since I'm a ex Mormon and had nightmares when I wore them .

I feel like walking around in the tropics wearing garments under a shirt, tie, and dark slacks was kind of a rite of passage - so I don’t regret that as much. The big regret I have is when I lived in SoCal as an underwater cinematographer. Weeks on boats and beaches there, Hawaii, the Bahamas, etc. and changing out of my wetsuit straight back into my garments.

Some background information on the Garments and the Temple Ceremonies: 1) The washing and anointings predate Joseph's entry into Masonry. They were practiced in the attic room of the Kirtland Temple. They involved old style tubs filled with whiskey laced perfumed water, and it was a full scrub down. Yes. The OG temple was little better than an exclusive bath house for the leadership of the church. The anointings involved a lot of oil, and people were basically greased up all over at the end. 2) Full tub Washing and Anointings continued into the Salt Lake Temple period and were replaced by the shield and dab approach either during the reforms made during the presidency of Heber C. Grant, or during the further reforms made by David O. McKay. I have seen the tubs, which were at that time still in storage in the lower levels of the temple. If I recall correctly, there were in the lower of the two underground levels. In that same room were shelves filled with pitchers and wash basins to be given to recipients of the second anointing. 3) Heber C. Grant was also the first to alter the original garment. Many argued against him doing.it. One of the seamstresses of the original garment (the OG G) was still alive and was interviewed to determine how much of the design was what Joseph asked for versus what they came up with on their own. Please note that the women (including Emma) who sewed the original garments created a piece without embedded symbols. The symbols were cut into the garment during the endowment process. Some men were left with scars on their chests from this process. As no women were endowed until Emma accepted polygamy and became the first endowed woman, none of the women could be entrusted with the symbols of the holy priesthood. After Emma was endowed, she objected to having the garment cut while on her person so loudly that she was allowed to add the symbols to the garments used for future endowments for women prior their use.. Anyway, Heber C. Grant introduced a long-john style garment with a button up drop bottom and button up front. The neck line was much lower than the original, but this new one extended to the ankles. They were made of thick cotton and were great in a cold winter, but totally unbearable in the heat. I've worn these and can attest. 4) I'm not sure when the penalties were reduced to the ones I first encountered, nor when the oath to avenge the death of Joseph Smith was removed, but I believe it was after 1956, based on my mother's initial temple experience, and so most likely came about along with the first film version under the leadership of David O. McKay. In October 1953, President McKay tasked Gordon B. Hinckley with the job of finding a way to present the endowment in multiple languages in the upcoming Swiss Temple without needing too many temple workers. Brother Hinckley came up with the idea of a film presentation with headsets playing audio in different languages at once. This initial film was made in the solemn assembly room in the Salt Lake Temple. He did get permission from Walt Disney Company to use a segment from Fantasia to present the creation. This was done with permission. The flow and content of the endowment was altered at this time to make it fit more easily with a the filmed presentation. Changes to the live endowment reflected these improvements. The first film was completed by June 1955, and was first used in the Swiss and then the New Zealand Temples. So shortly after my mother took out her endowments in 1956, the ceremony was altered everywhere else. Her second visit to the temple would not be for several years, as she served a 3.5 year mission in the far-east immediately after being endowed. Feel free to ask any other questions you may have. I will answer what I can.

I thought about this before, when garments first came out, women were wearing a chemise (the white night gown thing) then a corset over top & in the mid 1800’s the style of dress was long sleeves & high neck so garments underneath wouldn’t of been a big deal for dress. I’m curious if Mormonism started in the early 1800’s when the dress style was an empire waist & lower cut dress if it would’ve been similar or not. Just a thought because garments matched the dress so well. Although maybe I’m giving these men too much credit that they would’ve cared at all.

I was endowed in 2016 and the main thing I remember was being so anxious about not knowing what was going on. I felt so out of place and heavily relied on my grandma and mother in law to be to guide me through. I was sad that my mom and siblings weren’t with me (as they all left the church before I did) and I think that contributed to me feeling out of place. On top of it all, the veil I had on was so thick I could barely see through it which added to my disorientation. On a side note, it’s hilarious to me that they used to use clips of Fantasia and I wonder if that’s why we watched it so much when I was a kid.

Fantasia is all animation. It kind of fits the bill considering how much we're conditioned by the church to have a child-like world view. Also those penalty oaths seem so worth it when the pay off is delighting in Mickey as a wizard's apprentice set to some sick classical music 🥴

Garments never meant much to me. I just couldn't turn the symbolism they were assigned to actual meaning for me. The first thing i did when i realized the church wasn't true was take them off. I ended up getting some boy short underwear and a white tank top to wear to my parents' house, so it would look more like I was wearing them 😂 but then I realized that they didn't notice my second piercing in my ear that I had gotten after spending a week together so they probably weren't that observant and they probably wouldn't notice.

oh yeah i thought you were supposed to wear the garment top under the bra and was constantly annoyed by my bra riding up until i made my first rebellious move and started to wear my bra under my garments. also yes that was how i kind of signaled to my MiL that we were no longer going to church because she could see that i was no longer wearing them.

I was outed for having left the church by an ex partner who posted pictures of me wearing a dress without sleeves on facebook, and my parents immediately called to ask why I wasn't wearing my garments. After that phone call with my parents they barely contacted me for a full year.

I would imagine that wearing those polyester play suits would be absolutely insidious after a while just the thought of having to wear those things kept me away from going to the temple. I just allowed myself to wear cotton and not take out an endowment that I felt was superfluous.

I'm not sure why this popped up on my feed but I wear garments and I think they are great. Nice to see that a lot of the people in the comments here are respectful of something that I hold sacred. My poor, sweet sister is 19 and on a mission. She got her garments, and she was sad bc she's an actual petite girly. All her taller friends got petite garments to wear shorter shorts, and the petite garments gave her no wiggle room. She also got rid of lots of her old clothes that wouldn't work even tho some of them were her favorites.

@2130 There was never any direction or instruction from the LDS Church as to whether the garments were to be worn below or above bras and underwear. The fact that she shares this anecdote is proof that no one had specific instruction on this issue.
