Imagine If BMW Built a Tesla With Volvo Parts, that's probably the best way to describe the Polestar 2. It has a "Germanic" feel that we haven't exactly seen from Volvo, but of course this isn't a Volvo, it's a Polestar. Polestar is a joint venture between Volvo and their parent company Geely (sort of like a partnership between your right hand and your left hand I suppose) whose goal is to build tech-forward full EVs with a non-traditional sales process. The Polestar 2 has the thrust that we've come to expect from performance EVs combined with solid build quality, a sleek interior and steering and suspension tuning that is decidedly European. I have just one question: Can they build more?

You dont have to double click on the gearshifter to go from P to D or D to R. Just pull all the way back and you go into D, all the way forward to go into R.

I test drove a Chevy Bolt last week. The salesman kept pushing one pedal driving so I tried it. I really didn't like it. It felt grabby, and I wasn't sure where I would stop. I have been used to coasting before braking since I started driving. Maybe it feels more natural over time.

There is also the matter of familiarity. If someone has driven a two pedal (or three petal) method all their life, then converting to one petal driving would be very difficult. Most of characteristics of our driving are learned in the early years of driving. In 10 or so years, it will be closer to the norm.

It's inefficient because regeneration does not recuperate all of the energy, but only Audi E-tron has the ability to coast because it doesn't use permanent-magnet motors. Pressing the accelerator to brake less is also counterintuitive and less safe because if you have bad fine-motor control in a conventional setup, you will brake harder. If you have bad fine-motor control in a single-pedal setup, you will accelerate into the car in front of you.

Personally I don't think one pedal driving is safe. If you become accustomed and subconsciously conditioned to just raising your foot off the pedal to slow down, then when a child cycles out in front of you, instinctively your going to react by just lifting your foot off the accelerator instead of slamming down hard on the brakes. I think research has shown conditioning is important in how people act in panic situations, people don't act logically, there needs to be much more scientific research.

On the iPace ground clearance is it really 5.6in I though it had an air suspension 🤷‍♂️ maybe that’s the lowest height for it

Trunk comfort animation is fantastic. The P*2 is my pick for my long term EV myself. I don't need "the most range possible" (since that's not what I've ever bought any car I've ever owned over) nor do I need "the fastest car on the track" (since I never am drag racing while I commute to work or the grocery store) and this is fairly understated while still attractive and feels like CAR. And that's enough for me. Your reviews are excellent, honest and I've been loving the other channel as well! One of the better detailed and focused reviewers around. No need for crazy gimmicks or unrealistic driving tests where you floor it uphill in the snow while drifting sideways. Just smart, organically funny, honest and unbiased without doing the "this is a worse " scheme. I'm just glad the EV market is increasing and giving people options that may feel drastically different. No one is losing out to this being available.

Great info as always, Alex. I think it's worth adding the technical details about the electric motors just as you would for a gas engine (turbo, Atkinson cycle, etc.). There are significant tech differences among the current EVs with distinct pros, cons and capabilities.

Agreed. The squared-off roofline isn't in the current fashion, but gives very good headroom and matches the overall lines.

I ordered one of these as soon as they debuted way back in the day, but wound up canceling my order because of the service model. You can only get the car serviced at one of the "Polestar spaces"...they are not using the Volvo dealer network, and Spaces are only a few in the country and only a few more coming in the next year or two. If you live within 150 miles they will come and get the vehicle for any service or maintenance (Reps confirmed if they come get it they will be towing it), which in theory is nice but I live 120 miles from the closest space, which meant that every time it needed any kind of maintenance or service they would have to come and flatbed tow it 240 mi round trip and have my car for who knows how long, even for the most minor issue because they don't have roving support. I just imagined myself getting into arguments with Polestar about needing some minor adjustment or squeak or broken something but them not wanting to come and get the car because it's not worth towing all that way just for a minor issue. I envisioned them saying "You'll have to wait until we're in that area for another vehicle and we'll tow them together" or some nonsense, which when I spoke to reps said "We'll work with each customer to find a convenient time to come get the vehicle" and I kept asking "Convenient for whom?" and they were pretty cagey about confirming they'd come pick up my car for any issue regardless of size. And then I would just be stuck with a series of small problems until they were enough to warrant towing the car all that way. I just bought a Mach-E and the trunk made a weird sound when it opened due to the insulation liner rubbing the wrong way, and I just ran over to my Ford dealer and they fixed it in 20 minutes. if I had this issue on the Polestar I feel like I would wind up having to fix it myself. Plus they could not guarantee I would get a loaner for any given service, and this would be my only car so could be left without a vehicle more often than normal. Also if you are more than 150 miles from a space, reps confirmed to me that they will charge you per mile to bring it back and forth for service for every mile over 150, and that price "may vary on region" but they couldn't give me a price. So it really doesn't make any sense to buy this unless you are within reasonable driving distance to one of the Spaces. Also the cup holder thing was a total deal breaker, and this vehicle still has NO SiriusXM radio or CarPlay. Reps told me sometime in "late 2021" was their "goal" 🙄 but if there is one thing I have learned, you always have to buy a product for the features that it has at the time of purchase, not for what is being promised in the future, because those could always be delayed or may never come.

Polestar 2 is designed primarily for the European market. You see Europe isn’t big, so isn’t the car. I would say polestar didn’t focus on the North American market at all. Volvos would do better

TFL Cars said you could take to any certified Volvo dealer for repairs. Don’t know if that’s correct.

@@thecliff4838 Not according to my Polestar rep. They told me they are not using Volvo dealers in the US right now so you need to use a Space...that's how I know so much about how the servicing and towing works...I spent an hour talking through it with them to figure out if it would be feasible for me given that I couldn't bring it to my local dealer. Of course that service model could change in the future, but not the case currently

Very thorough review. Getting ready to purchase my next car (replacing my 2013 C-Max Energi). The Ford Mach-E currently has the edge simply because I live in Southern Oregon. No Tesla or Volvo dealers or service for hundreds of miles in any direction, but a great Ford dealer in town. However, the Tesla charging network would switch my thinking as they are plentiful on the West Coast. Not the same for the other competitors.

Love this car. Had one for a few months now. After last OTA you can charge up to 155 KWh now. The adaptive lights are amazing!

As a 3x Volvo owner (currently V60 CC), am interested in Polestar however....in a "chat" with Polestar today, they confirmed that Volvo dealers WILL NOT be able to service Polestar vehicles. Unless that changes or a lot more Polestar spaces appear, Polestar is "out" for us as we're currently 250 miles from nearest Polestar Space ( and fortunately 4 miles from a Volvo dealer so the XV40 ReCharge or perhpas C40 may be alternatives for us). Good comprehensive review Alex...I do see now however that the Polestar 2 with the appropriate "pack" does include a heat pump.

I would definitely get this Polestar 2 over the Mache. Definitely would do a different spec I interior though. I also appreciate the direct ish sales method Polestar allows you.

I like your reviews, very informative, i would like more information on cost of ev charging. Also I am so up in the air as to which ev I would buy as an entry level vehicle without spending a lot of money.

You can easily figure how much it would cost you to charge at home, just multiply your utility's price per kwh with the size of the vehicle's battery, in the Polestar 2's case that's a 73 kwh battery. Though realistically it would be less since you're not charging from completely empty to full. Unfortunately, EVs are still pretty expensive at around $40k minimum.

I think it’s the rear that makes it boxy. The rear lights I like but I don’t like the boxy shape. I think it will age the car quickly…..I’ve ordered one though :-)

It is interesting you get the 4.05 number as well! Carwow gets around this figure with performance pack but the consensus seems to be that performance pack slows this car down probably coming from the Bjorn figure.

I got hooked on e-pedal about two hours after picking up my 2018 Nissan Leaf SL. Your comment about e-pedal being too aggressive makes me wonder if you are always just taking your foot off the throttle, or if you "modulate" the pressure to give you whatever mix of acceleration or braking you desire. I put whatever pressure I need on the throttle to get the speed/acceleration/braking I want. Once in a while I actually use the brake if I need "fast' braking. In that regard I prefer maximum regen all the time; I can add a little throttle for less regen. No thumb paddles needed. BTW in driving gasoline vehicles, I've always modulated the throttle to use engine braking although that's usually not nearly as effective as regen:-)

If you are an EV driver for a year you understand that you don't need to change regen modes as often as you need turn indicators (so flaps are nonsense) but you need something to push/pull to engage maximum regen.

The buying and especially the service situation are why I choose the Mach-E over the Polestar 2, even though I live near NYC. In the UK, Volvo dealers can service the Polestar 2, but not in the U.S.

I recently test drove a Polestar 2 and asked this question. They will send service techs to you if you have any problems and they'll drop off a loaner assuming they can't fix on the spot.

He is so right when he says that the performance model is not what most people buy. I see that as a trend on this channel. He reviews cars with the average user in mind, not just for the 0 to 60s crowd.

I've never understood those formed plastic cargo covers. Yes, they are cheap; but they're just too awkward to store. The roller-style are nicer; but I kinda liked the elasticized fabric one found in the first generation Chevy Volt, or even the twist-and-fold one found in the Bolt. They hide stuff, but have some give and they become really small when you want to store them.

I see it the opposite with roller ones being useless. When shopping we place delicate items like bread, eggs, flowers etc on there. Can’t do that on a roller.

Weird is the pricing, polestar is the cheapest option of Mach e model 3 and p2. The p2 Dual motor is priced as a model 3 standard range.

It has no battery preheating yet - which would increase the range for cold starts and lower mileage journeys, plus delays the braking regen, and also charging speed. Perhaps a retro-fit heater attached to outside of battery 'coolant' system, or a thermal link from the A/C cabin heating system, might work ? Or do we wait 2 or 4 years for a model upgrade with this, and a heat pump ?

So, if I'm correct, both the Polestar 2 and the Mach-e have a giant sunroof with no cover. It's just hard to imagine getting into my parked car in Phoenix. It gives new meaning to 'Sizzle'.

Yes If I had this car in the HOT desert I would put a sun blocking wrap on the roof. NO SUNSHADE IS RIDICULOUS.

Nice review. The Google Android Automotive OS is buggy and incomplete. Understand its use int he Polestar 2, but the XC40 Recharge should have stuck with Sensus for now.

Really underrated. It's not comparable to tesla as they had such a huge head start. With over the air updates this car will improve over time!

I'm starting to warm up to this car. Yes the range could be greater, but I like the fact Volvo is heavily involved in the design instead of just being another startup. The Android Automotive is a great system as a fan of Android devices. I dig the fact all the safety systems & features you expect out of Volvo to be found here as well, without some frankly absurd false advertising like a "not full self driving" going on with you-know-who. The whole "if BMW built a Tesla using Volvo parts" is actually pretty attractive for me as well. I always admired BMW engineering philosophy, Volvo's sturdiness and for all of its shortcomings, Tesla's ideas. The use of wider tires and aggressive performance rubber definitely hurts the EV range the Polestar 2 has, but it trades this fo better performance. Honestly speaking 230mi or 360km is FAR more than enough for 90% of daily needs, and I much rather get some better handling characteristics over being able to boast about an EV range figure I would only really explore every 2~3 times per year on a long road trip, where the availability of the ever growing availability of CCS public chargers makes this a moot point. My only real reservation is how well the Polestar 2 holds up to reliability over the long term. Newer Volvos are having a lot of issues with electronics which I hope Polestar can fix via OTA updates, but even then I much rather they go the full Toyota and just release a trouble free version of the software from the get go instead of trying to put band-aids on top of band-aids like Tesla have been doing since the beginning. @@odisy64 Safer? How? All automakers all have pretty complete active safety suites these days. Tesla's is nothing special. Better than some, worse than others. As for Tesla's self-driving features, Consumer Reports is not a fan, thinking they're being way oversold. They, and some auto magazines, prefer the more limited Cadillac system, which works very well without promising more than it can deliver.

Teslas have the lowest probability of injury out of any car tested by the NHTSA even other European electrics Tested by the European NCAP. things like the model S and Y having the lowest roll over probablity out of any SUV sold is important since roll over only account for 2% of serious car accidents but make up 30% of fatal motor accidents in the US every year. consumer reports is a fan but its biased, and that not me trying to make excuses, its very clear if you look at their point system. while Tesla scored very low on safety features revolving around keeping the driver aware of the road and limiting where they could activate their autopilot/Cadillac cruze system. because Tesla allowes you to turn on autopilot on most roads it was rated down while the Cadillac system was awarded points for not allowing users to turn it on if the situation was not suitable enough for the system to handle. and because its lidar and geo map based its extremely limited to a few mapped roads in the US. but where Tesla did score the highest was capability. Teslas autopilot had the fastest and most precise response and awareness of its surroundings. Teslas FSD was absolutely more capable then cadilac but capability was seen as equally important as having a system that nags you or prevents you from using the system all together. the IIHS recently reported a Study saying that Teslas autopilot system may actually make people more attentive. this is very strange coming from an insurance organization that has a history of being harsh on Tesla. you should check out the recent FSD beta videos, the car is much more capable than anything else ive seen on public roads.

@@odisy64 Tesla's autopilot is only in name, you have to be very vigilant because it will run you into a wall, a semi, a divider or a pedestrian if you don't pay attention. It's a beta feature that they charge final pricing for and is realistically still many years off from being truly autonomous as is the definition of the name. Basically it's being used as a cash cow for Tesla since the cost of the hardware is a fraction of what they charge. Also, nearly all EVs have very low rollover probability because the batteries are the heaviest part of the vehicles and are situated low under the body.

Hey Alex. Can you let me know what finish this is? I've seen different videos, and it seems that one of the finishes looks a little different in each of them. Probably just due to the lighting/white balance of videos. I absolutely love this finish though, whichever it is.

Alex you can pin this comment if you would like. :) He used to work for ttac (the truth about cars) he and the online blog/review company got into a big row over his videos competing with the website . They parted ways it was somewhat a bad divorce but his channel has taken off. Normally long videos do terrible on KZfaq but he has a nice little niche without much competition.

I also found the back seats very uncomfortable they were very upright and even when you reclined it slightly it was still too upright for my taste. Otherwise I agree with pretty much everything you said in the review

How is the driver leg and foot room? The XC40 is too constricted for my left foot and forces it into an awkward angle. So not comfortable. Also, how is right knee space? The center console looks restrictive much like the Toyota Venza.

Polestar for me here in the uk. PCP method of payment has poor residuals on the Mach e so expensive monthly payments. Tesla has 10000 minimum miles each year so again expensive monthly payments. Also it’s £3000 to insure my mrs on. Polestar is a superb Tesla alternative. Not as efficient, no supercharger network, but holds the road really well and is quick. Arguably better looking and better quality inside. Waiting for the configurator to come back online April 11 to place my order. I’m also a Tesla shareholder.

What I don't like about the infotainment screen is those thick bezels. Screens/monitors have been moving towards smaller bezels and it seems automakers are keeping costs down by using outdated styling. I do like that we are seeing the Android Automotive OS being used. This is leveraging Google's Assistant which detects and understands your voice very well compared to other in-house ones made by automakers. What I also especially like is the integration with the car. You can do things such as turning on the A/c or adjusting it and other functions. I am hoping this AA OS gets more popular with other automakers as it seems like a better choice than spending the money to create an in-house solution.

Technically every car with air conditioning has a heat pump. It's just very rare for them to be reversible to pump heat IN to the passenger compartment instead of the standard OUT of the passenger compartment. I am dismayed by how long it is taking for that almost trivial addition.

I really hope the Polestar SUV has an adjustable height air suspension for comfort and ground clearance. The XC40 doesn't have that option and I really, REALLY don't want to have to manually adjust dampers on a $50,000 or more vehicle.

Personally, I like the Mach-E, but I really wish all these options had an option to either dim that glass roof or have a shade of some sort that would block it. Heck, I have Volvo S60 and it has that option. In a lot of places in US and the World, that glass roof is going to be something else in the Summer.

For non performance pack yes and for performance pack you will need racing wheels with enough load rating and caliper clearance

It’s hard to imagine buying one of these with so few dealers selling them. The only dealer remotely near me has poor online reviews. Polestar has a beautiful car but lacks a geographically available and high quality dealer support network in the USA. Too bad.

The reviewer is alluding to the little known experimental cars made by Nikola Tesla in the 1930s. He obviously felt it was Important to make that distinction in the minds of the audience so as to avoid any confusion.
