I feel like there's either something that has been left out of the story or he misunderstood something and is using his experience as an excuse to embolden his stance on trans issues, such has the anecdote with his Cousin. I accidentally did something like that once, I called a lady "mrs.", not realizing that it refered to a married person. She snapped back at me, which made things awkward, but I didn't hold it against her. Just use gender neutral terms if you're afraid of accidentally offending people 😅
