Time Out recently published their annual survey of coolest neighbourhoods, and this quirkly little Bangkok area, Pridi Banomyong near Phra Khanong BTS came in 12th. Can it really be the 12th coolest? Watch the video, and see what you think, and let us know your thoughts in the comments.
The Time Out article is here www.timeout.com/coolest-neigh..., and the specific section on Pridi Baonomyong is here www.timeout.com/bangkok/thing...
One thing to note is that a lot of the places Time Out lists are quite spread out along the different alleys leading off Sukhumvit 71. The easiest places to visit are those in Pridi Banomyong Soi 1 and 3, which are easy to walk to from the BTS. For other attractions, you may want to think about getting a taxi.
Here's what Time Out has to say about the area -
As the once-favoured districts of Thonglor and Ekkamai have become too packed and expensive, young locals and trendy expats have set off eastwards and landed on the streets off Soi Pridi Banomyong, an area also referred to as Phra Khanong (after the local Skytrain station). They’ve given this once-peaceful, now-buzzing residential quarter of Bangkok the multiracial vibe it never had: now its elegant, decades-old homes and old-school shophouse restaurants are dotted with cool cafés, hip bars, DIY galleries, chic boutiques and open-air markets masterminded by creative types. Swing by for a cup of artisanal coffee at Karo Coffee Roasters, snap photos of the street art around W Market, mingle with like-minded individuals at one of the area’s many excellent new bars, and breathe in the fresh energy - while it’s still here.
EAT Located in a super-low-key ‘food court’ near Soi Pridi 43, Larb Lub Lub (‘Secret Larb’) is well worth the walk up the main road. Join the clued-up locals and Japanese expats savouring north-eastern Thai fare alongside surprisingly fresh sashimi and Japanese bites at this clandestine joint.
DRINK Clouds Across The Moon captures its owner’s nostalgia for the ’80s with its interior and futuristic drinks. Or there’s Cielo Sky Bar at W District, where you can take in the mesmerizing night view of Bangkok.
DO Shop for fun, antique collectables at Masaru Japan Store, then check out contemporary art by breaking Thai and Japanese artists at Goja Art Gallery (which also hosts regular hip hop nights).
STAY Local Time offers a friendly and fuss-free stay in one of its dormitory-style rooms, as well as fun activities like beer tasting, yoga and jam sessions. -Top Koaysomboon, Time Out Bangkok
LOCALS SAY ‘It has a great location, not far from the city centre but quiet enough. My friends live in the area and there are cafés, street food and markets.’

It's not a tourist trap like Khao San Road. It's not a red light nightmare like Silom. You're not going to see tourists there. You're going to see a lot of foreigners who work in Bangkok for longer periods of time. If you're looking for flashy lights and parties go to Soi 11. If you're looking to see a good mix of locals with foreign people living in a safe, clean, and quiet location then I completely agree that Phra Khanong is #12 on that list if not #1 in Bangkok. I sometimes think some foreigners travel here just to snub their nose at "dirty" places. But everything to listed is absolutely beautiful (wow @ Pridi 31) and I'll definitely be visiting those locations you listed. (I work out of Phra Khanong usually 1-2 months out of the year).

Nice video! For sure a nice area, but the 12th coolest in the world? The W-Market is definitely cool at night, but the area is quite hot in the day.

I lived there for three years and then it was a bit of an undiscovered gem within a short motorcycle ride to Ekamai or Tong Lor. But the 12th best neighbourhood ....hmm not so sure about that.

It's definitely not for people that are casually looking for a day and leaving. It's my favorite place if you live there for more than a month. The pollution is bad. The traffic is worse. 3 major roads come together Soi 71, Rama 4 (Klong Toi), and Sukumvit. Great if you take BTS. If you need a better massage try Ponnapat Massage on Soi 71 and pay 300-600 for professional masseuse.

I agree! I lived on Soi 2 for 5 years and it was always buzzing with SO much great street food and it's very close to the wonderful wet market.

Coincidentally, we were in BKK and came across your vid while we were searching for more information about Pridi. We saw your video just 2 hours after you uploaded into YT. I must say we had very high expectation about the neighborhood after reading the Time Out article. Boy, we were so shocked when we went there. How on earth that alley can be name 12th coolest neighborhood? The journalist should have an eye check. There's literally nothing else 'significant' in there. You have pretty much covered all the 'spots' to visit. Other than that, bleah. Don't bother. I am not joking. Spend your precious time elsewhere.

yes, I don't really know the criteria for that list, I think they said to their contributers hey, give us something new, that people haven't seen before. There are definitely better places to see in BK. I think i f you live here though, and you've seen a lot of the usual places, then it's worth a trip, at least to Soi 1 and 2

The Aree area leaves it for dead. I think this is lazy, opportunistic journalism.

I think Time Out chooses these places to be deliberately provocative. This area is OK but it definitely isn't the 12 the coolest area in the world. May not even be the 12th best in Bangkok come to that
