On this livestream we'll explore the nature of Tudor. Do we give them too much attention? Many claimed they "won" Watches & Wonders 2024 (or at least had a stellar showing) but is all this buzz really matched by their creativity? By how the watches actually perform in the market? Let's discuss!

I find Tudor so frustrating! For me personally, it always feels like their designs get so close to being perfect, but for whatever reason, are always held back from reaching full potential. If they fixed the following issues, I'd become a Tudor customer! - Ranger, added applied markers. - FXD, released a version 2-3mm smaller with 20mm lugs. - Pelagos 39, made it in grade 5 titanium and/or stainless steel. - BB Pro, reduced the case thickness (this should be a possibility for Tudor now!). - BB 58 GMT, why only one colour choice!? I dearly hope they make an opaline dial version of this! - BB Ceramic, 39mm 58 version please? Universally, replaced the fake rivet bracelets, and reduced the text on all their dials. The 925 silver case BB 58 is probably the model closest to a potential purchase for me, but I'm scared off by the softer case material. I hope Tudor releases that goldie locks model for me soon! 🙂

I've seen some speculate Tudor does this on purpose. Always keeping it a little wanting. Either for their own benefit (to turn out something "better" the next year) or to keep Rolex looking better. I also really liked the 925 silver case and went and tried that watch on. But I didn't buy it for a different reason: Tudor doing display casebacks and not even bothering to machine-decorate the movements. That they did that and cheaped out with a display caseback instead of using a precious metal caseback just irritated me. Silver isn't exactly an expensive precious metal either. But those Tudor movements aren't worth looking at. What a waste.

@@WatcheswithDennis It appears there must be a some truth to that. You'd however think the mighty crown wouldn't be scared of a little internal competition! I'm a sucker for display casebacks, so I can forgive it, but I completely agree with what you said. No joke, Miyota 9015's come standard with more decoration! Even Seiko with their new Marinemaster line, added a display caseback, and have put some effort into the appearance of 6L37. It's not like it can't be done, just need to look at what Breitling has done with the same movement, the calibre B20.

Let’s hear your gripes on the monochrome.

@@tommyhenriquezkayakangler8465 If someone likes monochrome and that case in 41 mm, it seems to be a good offering from Tudor. For me personally, I prefer the BB 58 case, and I find monochrome a bit boring. I need at least a little splash of colour with my watches.

I’d say Tudor is appropriately hyped as long as you wait for a model to be readily available, don’t pay over retail and maybe go for a discount used. Also I don’t think you should buy one because of the Rolex connection other than if you like the vintage Rolex homage look.

I see you've put some time in the graphics. But I also appreciate sharing screen with preopened tabs when talking about watches. I do think thumbnail pics draw viewers including the clickbait questions.

I try to do prep for the livestreams and pre-load the tabs to try and adhere to a show outline. Success varies. I have no idea how much help the thumbnails have but I have been trying to keep them a bit cleaner. Clickbait titles do work though. 😉

Had my 1975 Rolex serviced by my watch repair guy. Minor service - nothing replaced. $85 5 years ago needed a new crystal 1 year ago- 125 but it was not a Rolex crystal

I had my crystal changed with another Rolex one in 2020 (mine had chips) and I think it was under $200

Just for reference do we have more quantitative data vs a ranking? If Rolex is way ahead of everything and the gap between 1 and 15 is 15 greater than the gap between 15 and 16 it is not the same thing (ie Nike vs New Balance / Under Armor or Mizuno - all in the top 5 for sneakers). On top of that what are the expectation of the company? Obviously they'd like to move as many units as they can but maybe they are content with the ranking as it is. Collecting stuff for value retention does not interest me, I see value in getting what I like and what I can get, not in flipping stuff.

Yes you can get some more detail here (see the second image) in the latest report Rolex is about 30% of the total Swiss market share for 2023 whereas Cartier and Omega (#2 and #3 respectively) are each about 7.5%. revolutionwatch.com/morgan-stanley-luxeconsult-2024/

@@WatcheswithDennis Thanks for sharing this! The following table "Swiss watch brands: our estimates of the top 50 brands’ turnover and retail/wholesale values in 2023" brings a bit more nuance. If we consider the price range (between 3K-5K) the only brands beating Tudor are Tag Heuer (+135K sales with a lot of marketing with Ryan Gosling see the glassbox model and the fall guy movie) and Cartier (slightly above the price range but almost 3x times Tudor's sales). It will be very interesting to see how this will evolve with Tudor slightly increasing their prices (around 4K-5K for base models such as the Monochrom for example). Very interesting video!

Rolex is basically a used watch brand at this point. I'm on the list for the Monochrome Tudor when they come in to my local AD. The Rolex AD already has them but I'm not buying it from that dealer because I don't have a purchase history with them. I don't buy anything from that store until they offer me a Rolex. IE I'm never gonna buy anything from that store and I'm good with that. If I really need a Rolex my local dealer for other brands have 2 sub right now I could get on Gray.

@@WatcheswithDennis I totally agree there’s enough different that makes it appealing. But there’s also a lot of Rolex models o find appealing so I end up in the same “maybe I should save for the real thing (a Rolex) even though this Tudor is cool.”

I found this livestream and enjoyed it-subscribed. Is Tudor overhyped? YES. killertaxi100 nailed it! KZfaq’rs hype Tudor to get more views and subscribers and many Tudor sales are just so people can establish a spending history to get considered for a Rolex model. Best regards 😎

Thanks, I think you are right on all counts. When a new Tudor drops I try harder to ensure I cover it than many other brands (no one cares if I talk IWC) and it is an easy way to establish spend history (though personally I have always taken advantage of the used or grey pricing Tudor has as people dump inventory they didn't really want or couldn't sell).
