So Luffy in the barrel is he left his village on a small boat but got attacked by sea kings and the boat was destroyed so he got in the barrel to save himself. They actually sort of show it in the manga and I think the anime has him explain it to Coby when he first meets him

So, the reason luffy ended up in the barrel, is that on his first day out at sea, he set sail in a dinghy, and ended up rowing it toward a whirlpool, so, to survive, he emptied out a barrel he had and stuffed himself in it so that he could survive it. He then ended up sleeping until he was found by alvidas crew.

As he had said 20 years ago when Ohara got destoryed, if Robin wanted to commit suicide the next day, she was free to do so. But, in his own mind, Aokiji thought he owed it to Saul to let Robin's life play out. Also, Jack, now you have started seeing people in the Navy who are not totally evil or follow absolute justice (like Lucci), people like Garp, Aokiji and Coby.
