June 6, 1989 - Detroit Pistons guard Isiah Thomas scored 24 points and delivered nine assists in just three quarters of work during Game 1 of the 1989 NBA Finals. In 32 minutes, Thomas was 9-of-16 from the field, helping build a 79-66 Pistons lead after three quarters before opting to rest a nagging hamstring injury in the fourth. The Pistons took Game 1 over the Los Angeles Lakers 109-97. Box Score: www.basketball-reference.com/b...

Ryan is the person making justice for the Pistons with all these videos. Priceless.

Think about what Isiah Thomas did on the final play of the first half in Games 1 of both the 1988 and 1989 NBA Finals. 1988-he passed to Laimbeer for a three point basket, stole Kareem's inbounds pass and hit a three pointer at the buzzer. 1989-on a iso, broke down the defender, hit Rodman for a layup at the buzzer . Two assists, a 3 pointer and a steal in about 7 seconds. Detroit got 8 points in the 3 possessions.

Isiah Thomas was superb. MJ looked pretty and scored. Thomas won championships against Magic, Bird, Wilkins, Ewing, MJ. I think Detroit is happy with Thomas.

Mike was better than Isiah every day of the week and twice on Sunday. And he has 3 times more rings. I think Chicago is happy with Mike.

Actually, Isiah was one of the most popular players of that era. He was/is targeted by a massive propaganda campaign.

"Everytime in the playoffs this year, when he's had a big scoring night, the Pistons have been unstoppable.'' says CBS broadcaster Hubie Brown on Isiah Thomas. Somewhere in Cook County, No 23 is saying don't remind me.

Woould love to hear from Pat Riley who he honestly thought was better Isiah or Magic. Riley saw up close how Isiah consistently cooked his back court - especially in the finals.

Wow, Nash over Stockton. He was more flashy than John. You can say the 3 ball if you want. Yet they produced similar scoring by the numbers. John was a better defender and arguably the greatest floor general. The man avg 14 assist twice and almost did it several times.

Magic got injured in game 2 late in 3rd quarter and was done for the series. So 83 is the only legit sweep

@TommyGibbs1 All the games in series were decided late in 4th quarter without Lakers starting backcourt. So they couldn't win one of close games with Magic? Especially the game Worthy dropped 40 with backups and Pistons pulled it out late. Besides, MJ and young Bulls won 2 against those Pistons

@@toryou6 All about matchups, Lakers had no answer for Detroits guards. Pistons would’ve won in ‘88 had the refs not cheated for LA. Honestly Magic was a liability on defense, Dumars and Isiah were cooking him before he bowed out, yea the games were close but it never really felt like LA was going to win, even with Magic. I don’t see LA winning a game in ‘89… And do the Pistons get swept by Chicago if Isiah is not playing hurt?
@toryou6
@toryou6 7 күн бұрын
@TommyGibbs1 Somehow the Lakers won 2 games in 88 with him defending both guys. Now they would get swept in 89? LA was without Scott too. Where every game in series came down to final 2 minutes and LA had back up guards. Even game 2 when Magic got hurt. It was late in 3rd in a tie game on the road. So with one full game played with Magic it just felt they couldn't win one game in series? That felt is based on your feelings? Sounds like you listen to alot of Zeke interviews. Since you brought up Zeke and Bulls. Does Pistons beat Celtics if Bird's back wasn't an issue and McHale didn't have injury to his feet? Magic missed games in 89 finals Zeke played in 91 series vs Bulls major difference
