Here's where you can try Killer Look-and-say Islands by Virtual: app.crackingthecryptic.com/R8...
Normal sudoku rules apply. Every marked cage is either a Killer cage, a Look-and-Say cage, or both Killer and Look-and-Say. Within Killer cages, digits must not repeat, and must sum to the total given in the top left corner. Within Look-and-Say cages, the ones digit of the number in the top left corner indicates a digit that appears in that cage, and the tens digit indicates how many times the ones digit appears in that cage. For clarity, digits may repeat in Look-and-Say cages even if they are also killer cages. Each cage is a part of an "island" formed of three cages all of size N, where it is possible to reach all three cages by traveling only orthogonally through cages of size N. Within these islands, one cage is a Killer cage, one cage is a Look-and-Say cage, and one cage is both.

Magnificent construct. I though I went on a different path than Mark for a while... but in the end (it doesn't even matter) it was just the order of the deductions... I did the same. Still, it is definitely doable to exactly follow what Mark is doing, so there are parallel paths.

I finished in 69 minutes. I really dig these rulesets that have you choose between options as you are solving the puzzle. It feels almost like unraveling a mystery and that is enjoyable to me. The combination of killer cages and look-and-say rules were really nice. I enjoyed it. Great Puzzle!

Solved in 164:17...I'm experienced in watching these videos but not doing it myself 😅 made a few mistakes at points where instead of starting from scratch I just referred to the solution here just to find what part was the mistake so I could undo back to that point and continue on with as """clean""" of a solve as I could, and have that happen a few times resulting in the inflated time. I'm still proud I saw it through at all, very cool puzzle that was surprisingly approachable for how complicated it seemed at first

I'm laughing so hard in that I also flipped the same 1 and 5 in column 1 by sheer coincidence. My problem was incomplete pencilmarking, where I'd only really filled in the central digit and had corner marked the 1's and 9's. Once I correctly penciled in the triple instead, I got the correct solution.

This puzzle was brought to you by the number 10. There may not be a 10-cage in this puzzle, but there's a whole lot of cages where 10 was the magic number. This one beat me up a bit. I think I kept getting too focused on digits that weren't solvable and missing the threads I could actually pull. It went on long enough that I lost track of some of my reasoning about the cages in box 4 and had to backtrack a bit after losing that thread too. Eventually got there with 93 minutes on the clock.
@awebmate

I think that the low number of solves is due to the over-complicated explanation of the rules. Would be better to just color the "islands" and say that each color has each type of cage. The puzzle itself is great, on the light side of medium-hard.

39:51. Definitely a long, but approachable one. Luckily figuring out the islands was easy so coloured them. A couple islands you found which were what immediately while a couple not til near the end. Definitely recommend this puzzle for newer solvers wishing to attempt a longer kinda challenging, but not difficult puzzle.

I don't know if it's just me, but sometimes the rules should be more concise. It says if the cage is both the killer and look and say that digits can repeat but it's not specified if any digit can be repeated or only those required to satisfy look and say rule. But otherwise, very well made nad enjoyable puzzle.
@RichSmith77
@RichSmith77 6 ай бұрын
Maybe the rule is exactly as precise as needed. Perhaps you're supposed to be able to repeat digits other than the look-and-say digits, in cages that are both killer and look-and-say. It's certainly solvable with that interpretation.
@dariobarisic3502
@dariobarisic3502 6 ай бұрын
@@RichSmith77 Hmm, that's the problem. I don't think it is. I was stuck at 14 cage that was both look and say and killer. If you allow repeats 1814 and 1354 work, but without allowing "1" to repeat there's only 1354 = 14 (at that point of my solve). The puzzle was relatively easy up to that point and I was then stuck for like 10-15 minutes trying to not "twist" the rule, and at the end had to assume 1 must not repeat. I mean, it's possible that it's still solvable without this assumption, but I didn't see how tbh. Edit: obviously i meant 1346=14
@RichSmith77
@RichSmith77 6 ай бұрын
@@dariobarisic3502 I remember thinking 1814 was an option for that 14 cage myself, at one point in my solve, and thinking I couldn't rule it out because of the repeated 1. I ended up getting the 7 in c3 and the 917 down column 5 that eventually ruled out the repeated 1 option. Mark seemed to find a different path, but he also permitted 1814 as an option until it became impossible for reasons other than a repeated digit (at 37:05, when he places a 3 in the 14 cage).

Well, guys I only took the rule to mean the look and say plus killer cages could have repeats. But only if it's like 28 which would need two eights. Just my opinion.
@srwapo
@srwapo 6 ай бұрын
40:15, not too hard of a puzzle, took me a little bit to realize that a "both" cage couldn't have repeated digits because of the Killer rules, took me even longer to realize that both of the 14 and 19 cages in Box 4 were look and say (one also being a killer), spent a long time assuming one wasn't.
@RoderickEtheria

Most complicated way to figure out that yellow is a 9 😂! That r5c4 has to be a 9 was available long before, due to the 19 cage in c1 which must have a 9 in box 4. This was a classical "Simon" , but nevertheless a great solve.
