yep that's basically what they attempted with the 4080 12GB last time. Along with the significant price increase of much of the product stack between 30 and 40 series. And this time AMD won't even release higher end GPUs.... Next gen isn't looking great on the price-to-perf aspect if this pattern continues.

@@ryzen89no that’s not it. Optimizing a game properly takes resources in terms of time and money. Investors want a game launched 6 months before it could even be ready and development costs cut to the bone, so optimization gets cut there. Nvidia and AMD aren’t happy about this because if the games aren’t better due to poor optimization then gamers won’t buy the newer games that sell the cards, and will instead either stick with their older cards or buy used and play older games. Nvidia isn’t too unhappy because they are busy making billions in AI, and AMD is content with their console sales which get properly optimized games that gamers want to buy.

@@ryzen89 nah gamer is not innocent in this matter. years ago i see that whatever the case gamer will still going to complain one way or another. when the game is very well optimized from the get go gamer will start accusing developer with stuff like console parity by not taking advantage raw performance provided by high end pc hardware to give better graphic fidelity. hence the game can run very well even on mid range hardware. but when game developer genuinely try to make game their more beautiful and end up being more demanding they will accuse game developer to be lazy with optimization hence the game run like a crap. i think that's why sometimes developer just give their middle finger to PC gamer haha.

There was a time when news about the next generation of graphics cards got me really excited, but now that I know the next generation will be as overpriced as the current generation, I'm just going to continue to not upgrade my graphics cards regardless of what characteristics the next generation of graphics cards has or doesn't have. I don't care what framerates those cards can produce if they are prohibitively expensive. I don't care what nifty ray tracing features they enable if they are prohibitively expensive. I don't care how much or how little power they consume if they are prohibitively expensive. I don't care if the power connector will or will not set my computer on fire if the cards are prohibitively expensive. Building and upgrading computers, and playing games are hobbies that just aren't fun anymore. Games these days are just vehicles for sleazy monetization, the graphics cards are overpriced, and motherboard manufacturers have decided that they don't feel like honoring RMAs anymore, even though motherboards are up to five times what they used to cost.

Relate to everything you said there. Gaming for 20 years, but lost excitement for new GPUs or even new AAA games. Most modern games are boring and aren't worth playing. The modern games are pretty but not fun to play. Prettier graphics and RT are like putting make up on a dead body. It's pointless. And they expect us to overpay for this crap? 😔

But you also have Fromsoftware and Nintendo for example! There a plenty of amazing games that are modern yet fun. Elden Ring, Tears of The Kingdom, FFVII Rebirth, Armored Core VI and so many more. Surely triple AAA games aren't as good anymore but none can deny the past 2 years has been marvelous.

Seeing Tango go down is crushing. The Evil Within is one of my favorite series and Hi-Fi- Rush was a masterpiece. Still shocked that was a shadow release. I hate Platinum and Microsoft.

Its really disgusting that Arkane gets shut down, especially when everyone working there told the managers again and again that Redfall would suck and would be a failure but they didnt listen... so the studio gets shut down while the managers who made the studio fail keep their job. Classic. From testing ive seen, the new intel power baseline in linux uses MORE power and gives less performance than extreme setting. This was tested on a 14900k on a Asus Prime Z790P Wifi.

and the management is hired to be responsible and quality control and keep time lines. What management used to be hired for is no longer the case. Now they are the ones that get to play the blame game instead of being blamed. It is the same in clinical situations, the nurses know everything about the patients and the doctors know nothing but the doctors blame nurses and tech when something goes wrong while malpractice insurance insures the doctor will practice and fail again while the nurses get sacked or disciplined.

The 4090 uses a 384-bit bus. There's no way the 5090 would use a 256-bit bus.

That's what I said about the 70-series. That the 4070 is not gonna have 192-bit. When ALL 70-class sold in the last 12 YEARS or so (since the GTX 670) all had 256-bit. 😠 Nvidia done fucked up with the 40 series. I think it's safe to consider the 50 series yet another skip generation.

@@lolmao500 It has nothing to do with Nvidia "caring", 512bit bus doesn't make sense. The cost to make a 512bit bus does not offer performance returns against an optimized 384bit bus. Nvidia's strategy is to brute force compute but optimize data transport.

@@divertiti AMD was building cards in the past with 512bit busses like the R9 290x, NVIDIA did it as well with the GTX 280. Even with such wide bus width's, those cards were cheaper for consumers to buy when compared to the 4090 series. Given how small the PCB are for the cards nowadays, pretty sure they can easily make it happen. A 512 bit bus on the 5090 should bump it's 4K performance considerably.

yeah keep in mind that they are using gddr7 modules with faster speeds, from what we have seen from the past years Nvidia will use that to their advantage and lower the bus width keeping the bandwidth similar to the 40 series

They cut Tango Gameworks what that take over seems to be a total cluster fuck at this point. MS clearly have done the "The EA" buy it all out etc and then when a great IP comes get it out and crush the studio and keeo the IP in the basement Mangers keep their jobs when fro the costs of 1 manger you could keep what maybe 2 devs on for another studio. This is what happened at Bungie and probably will later this year

21:57 Tip to publishers. Put a hardware engineer in charge. Not a software engineer. I'm a software engineer with a hardware background. Software engineers have a way of thinking that you can always fix it later. Recompiling is cheap. Hardware engineers know that "rework" costs more at the end than getting it right the first time. Replacing a part that got chopped off or filling back a hole that got drilled wrong is expensive.

looking at the SM cout ( if they are anywhere near true) i would guess that : 5090 is a bit cut down from GB 202 with 512bit bus 5080 is way more cut down from GB202 with 384bit bus only 96 SM for 5080 looks too little uplift (and the rumor say is stronger than 4090 ) so the GB203 could be 5070 back with 256bit finally after many years. the problem with that logic ? the card will be very very strong, even the 5070... and it will happen in the generation that NV need it the least because AMD don't have high end RDNA4. maybe option 2: all the above will happen in the "super" model refresh when NV will need to face RDNA5.

My overclocked i5-12400 has been running at 5.2 GHz all-core (R23 single core score ~2020) with PL1=120W, PL2=150W (105W/135W in summer) for 2 years and never has issues. I guess that's a big win compared to 14900K situation...

It's the same 4nm node. Everyone that says that because the uplift from 3090 to 4090 was 70% so expect this uplift now, is delusional cause this uplift from 3090 to 4090 was because the node shrinked by half. Now the node is the same. Don't expect massive uplift, do you forgot 10 series to 20 series? Also 1080ti was GDDR5X and 2080ti was GDDR6 and still the uplift was only 31% according to techpowerup. Here also we have new memory, but same node, so expect small improvement.

Not really true. Depends on the node and the architecture. There have been multiple instances where clocks went up significantly on a new node (Pascal, Ada Lovelace). In the past they used to do die shrinks on the same architecture, and that always allowed for higher clocks too.

So, if one sees an RX-6800 for $320 on NewEgg, should that be purchased, or will the RX-9600-XT (I think AMD will skip Radeon 8000-series for the cards names, so the Ryzen and Radeon line-ups match up) at $300 be better? Or if a 7900GRE is found for $480, would that be a better deal than the RX-9700-XT for $550 ? 5:26 - nVidia has done this before. GTX-x80 chips were always the x10 or x00 dies, then the GTX-680 came out an it was based on a GM104 Die, the decendant of the GT104 or the GTX460. So nVidia made the successor of the GTX460, the GTX680. The GTX680 performed MUCH better than the GTX580 and Radeon 5870 at the time, so it seemed justified. Maybe this new RTX-5090, that's really an RTX-5080, which is ACTUALLY an RTX-5070-Ti may offer the performance to justify itself.

I could see Nvidia doing what u said and using the other dye for a 5090ti. I have tested no rest for the wicked and it is night and day difference when it comes to the performance issues way way better. My 3080 at 1440p was chugging down to 30 to 45 fps and now it very rarely drops below 60

Really agree with Daniel with how developers should be focusing on smaller titles with less sunk cost. And giving the studios more creative freedom. The success of smaller games like palworld, helldivers 2, should have been a indicator of the shift in PC gaming "meta"

Nvidia has rolled tiers down their chip line up several times already, so it's possible. We'll see. I'm not expecting it to happen. People put way too much stock in clock speed, and TFLOPS for that matter, but any day of the week a 2Ghz Core 2 Duo was better than a 3Ghz Pentium D. It only matters inside the same architecture, and even then, it doesn't scale the same across architectures. It should be celebrated when a new architecture can surpass an old architecture, while being at a lower clock speed.

These companies spend a lot of time and money on their next projects, and if their current games ain't selling well, then it's gonna put a big dent into their upcoming ones. Possibility -- Studio execs see the risk in creating very expensive-to-make, AAA, hard-to-run, photo-realistic games, but they think it's worth the risk because that's where the really big potential profits lie. This is even more enticing to them with better and better frame generation and upscaling trickery because more gamers can play the "big" games with the hardware they have and will buy them because FOMO: More players = more profits. So they shift resources to such "blockbuster" projects and poo-poo anything that they think has no chance to be the next Tomb Raider or GTA. It's all about about profits and shareholder returns.

AAA game companies focus only on milking their fan base rather than creating a game with memorable experience. Small indie games focus solely on the game and the experience it provides. Its more of an passionate project for them with creative freedom. Ofc not all indie games are like that and not all AAA games are like that either. Games that i really like are a mix of both like manor lord, bannerlord, cyberpunk 2077, witcher 3, anno 1800, last train home, no man's sky.

The last projections I remember seeing said that the 5090 was going to be 50 to 70% faster than the 49, and it was going to retail for $2000 MSRP. That sounds about right to me, and everything about the lower spec cards is probably just hearsay at this point considering how Nvidia doesn’t roll out their mid range cards until the following year, Q2.

I believe the GB203 is 96 SMs, so I just can't see that, with a 10% clock bump being faster than a 4090. In path tracing workloads it could match, it but with a 20% SM increase over the 4080 Super (assuming it's even 100% intact when in reality it'll probably 10% disabled), and a 10% clock bump, it'll be 10% behind a 4090, and 20-30%% ahead of a 4080 SUPER. There are hardly going to be IPC increases per SM this upcoming generation to raster. It's a die shrink with a minor clock increase and RT and ML improvements.

Highly doubt 5090 won't be gb202 lol. This is nvidia, they like being dominant. Don't forget that rdna5 will be out during the 50 series lifespan so they have to counter for that too. What I think nvidia is doing with the 5080 is making a card that has less of a jump so they can keep costs down and still keep good margins. Hence why it looks heavily cut down from the 5090. They know $1200 was too much and didn't sell well. So I'm thinking a 5080 with 16gb vram with raster around or slightly better then the 4090 ( so around a 30% increase over the 4080 ) but with the improvements they've surely made to ray tracing I'd expect at least 20% better in ray tracing compared to the 4090. So it's not as much of a jump besides in ray tracing, I think it could do well at $999. Even better if it was $899. They're not going to make the mistake of putting an 80 series out above $1000 again. At least not this generation lol

I am prepared to not see an Nvidia 50 series at the time everyone is expecting because Nvidia declared they are no longer a graphics company. A reason why the 4090 is 60% faster than the 3090 is the 4090 has 60% more CUDA cores. What this mean is even with the more advanced 4090 process-node and increased clock speed only brute force quantity of cores can improve performance. But more interestingly is the 4090 has 2.7x more transistors than the 3090. (The advance-node benefit is likely why the 4090 is not a 945 watt GPU but instead a 450 watt. The 3090 is 350 watts, times 2.7 is 945 watts.) Those extra transistors must be for the frame-generation feature. That is a lot of silicon for the few games that are using this implementation. Future implementations are likely to be more generic and not hardware specific like AMD where they use the generic asynchronous compute (but only for those GPU's with sufficient size). That is where I would use those transistors. But that's if the investment in silicon continue with GPU's not NPU's. This year the hammer dropped for OLED monitors. Since then no other type of monitor seem relevant. I'm waiting for the hammer to drop for AI. When that happens advancements in GPU's are dubious.

Regarding the GB 202 vs 203, these rumor discrepancies happen weeks after AMD all but confirmed they're pulling out of the high-end space for the next round. It could be that the 202 was planned for the 5090, but is now going to AI only. Even if the 5090 uses GB 202, there's no incentive for them not to disable half the die or something stupid like that....

Talking about AAA games, make things with replay value. Case in point look at the new manor lords game. That’s a lot of fun. Imagine when they can add more to it. I actually purchased the other day a game from about 1995. Anyone remember Lords of theof Realm 2? Even 30 years later, it’s still challenging and has replay value. Why not make games like that and add content as you go?

It just hit me, and have to comment. What if GB202 is 512-bit bus on Dual Die configuration only? Nvidia will not give us gamers more VRAM, because then you could use consumer GPUs to run LLMs. 256 bit bus can run 8 modules (32 bit each). GDDR6 has 2GB per chip, while GDDR7 will have 2GB and 3GB per chip modules. But, GRRD7 is not yet ready. So what if they release top die with 256 bit bus, GDDR6(X) and it will have 16GB VRAM. This is the only GPU for gamers this year. They could call it 5090 or 5080. Next year, when GDDR7 will become available, can get 24GB on 256 bit bus. And they call this refresh versions their TI line. So we get: 5080 256 bit 16 GB GRRD6(X) 5070 256 bit 16 GB 5060 192 bit 12 GB ---refresh--- GDDR7 TI 5090 Ti 256 bit 24 GB GDDR7 5080 Ti 256 bit 24 GB 5070 Ti 192 bit 18 GB Thoughts?

Arkane Austin only developed Prey (back in 2017) and godawful Redfall - and from what I recall, the problem with Redfall was with the studio and lack of supervision from Bethesda. I think they just lost Xbox trust after that. And Tango was probably doomed after Shinji Mikami left.

Yep 256 bits 5080's bus is the nonsense... Even if it is 20 GB or so, it's a bad thing. You couldn't get a bandwidth as good as a well tailored one. I hope NVidia will not do this and will not sell it at +$1000.

@@wwk279 Bus isn't at all that important now! Only cache is important on Nvidia new technologies and new architectures. By your logic we still would rocking the gtx 280 with 512 bit bus. The bus on 3080 isn't important, it still 55% slower than 4080 and 60% slower than 4080 super. Lols!!! And that's not even when including DLSS and frame generation. Also 3080 a lot less officient then 4080 and 4080 super. Actually the all 3000 series was very inofficiant.
