This movie doesn't mention a lot of info from the books. The Womping Willow tree was planted to give Lupin a safe place to turn into a werewolf, as nobody would dare to go near it. The tunnel leads to the shrieking shack which people thought to be haunted, but actually the howls and screams from the house that people heard were actually Lupin's. Lupin's friends James, Remus and Peter all learned to become an Animagus to help Lupin through the night everytime he turned into a werewolf.

Lupin's backstory was cut from the film which was really dissappointing considering how rough he's had it. Lupin's father was outspoken on hating Werewolves, so one night a Werewolf called Fenrir Greyback broke into his house and bit Remus as a child for revenge. Lupin only barely was allowed to attend Hogwarts after Dumbledore accommodated him by planting the Wamping Willow that was used as a tunnel to a shack outside the villiage so remus could transform there and not hurt anyone. It got the name The Shrieking Shack becuase it was Remus howling in there the whole time.

When the Marauder's Map insulted Snape, it referenced the 4 creators of the Map - Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot, and Prongs. It never says in the movies, but they are Remus Lupin (Moony), Peter Pettigrew (Wormtail), Sirius Black (Padfoot), and James Potter (Prongs). All of their nicknames were based on what they could transform into, with the only one that wasn't shown in the movie being James transforming into a Stag

It’s so refreshing to see a reaction where the person actually pauses, analyzes and points out details and talks about it. It shows clear interest and is engaging with the film and the audience simultaneously. It’s also nice when they rewind to catch something they may have missed or want to double check, which is exceedingly rare among reactors/reaction channels.

Imagine being locked up in the most infamous prison on earth (in the wizarding world) for 12 years, knowing you were framed by your "best friend" who betrayed your other best friend and had them murdered and your godchild orphaned and you can do nothing but sit there and seethe in wrath. I find it incredible that Sirius wasn't completely cracked in the head once he got out. His mental fortitude is something else. Apperantly he escaped by going into his dog form, which tricked the dementor guards who only detected human life, then he swam as a dog to shore with a makeshift wand he made in prison. Epic man!

Prisoner of Azkaban is my favorite movie of the whole series! It is so beautifully done and artistically shot

You probably didn't catch that when Lupin walked in front of the Boggart that it changed into a Full Moon about to crest over the clouds. Which is Lupins biggest fear because of what happens to him during full moons.

Professor Lupin is the first Defense Against The Dark Arts teacher that not only turned out to be the good guy, but to guide Harry for the evil that comes his way. The only part of Lupin that was bad was his wolf form.

My favorite things about Prisoner Of Azkaban: 1. The song "Double Trouble". 2. Hermione punching Malfoy right in his smug face. 3. The introduction of Gary Oldman as Sirius Black and David Thewlis as Remus Lupin. 4. Harry flying on Buckbeak's back over Hogwarts (SPECTACULAR scenery).

Yes!!! “Turn to page 394.” -Snape, Circa 1993 Thank you so much for highlighting the beautiful technical work of Alfonso Cuaron in this film. He directed this film right after ‘Y Tu Mama Tambien,’ so the studio took a chance with him and his artistic sensibilities, but it paid off as he further matured the visual tone/ elements accordingly (still much love for the excellent work of Chris Columbus prior). Also, it’s nice to see someone have an emotional connection to this film. I remember being emotional myself watching this one for the first time, even after reading the book. Buckbeak’s flight was always a special moment for me (that score! Last soundtrack from John Wiliams for these films). Also, I love the direction of this film. It’s my personal favorite of the series.

Even though the movies sometimes give a lot of clues, you're very good at analyzing and figuring out the twists before they happen. I noticed a lot of people in the comments don't believe this is a first time viewing, but I do because my mom was the same way when she saw them for the first time. Don't know if you've taken the official sorting quiz yet, but I'm getting strong Ravenclaws vibes from your brilliance.

Each film gets darker as you go through the series. Even the Warner Bros. logo is different with each film after Year 1. Edit: Rest in peace, Sir Michael Gambon (the new Dumbledore actor from this film onward). 2nd edit: Gary Oldman is BRILLIANT as Sirius Black! 3rd edit: That was Warwick Davis from the previous two films, in case you couldn't recognize him. And you're right. The kid actors HAVE grown. They legit grow more and more mature in each film. 4th edit: I think Harry was thinking of his parents before the night they were killed. He said he didn't know exactly what they were saying to him, which would make sense given that he WAS still a baby when Voldemort killed them, but thinking about his parents months before that fateful October evening was a wise choice. Lupin inspired Harry to remember being with his parents and living out each day with them before all this happened. He wasn't sure if it was real, but I think it was. Hell, I bet that memory was Lily and James telling Harry how much they both love him and how proud they were to be his parents. 5th edit: Harry had discovered his Patronus in that moment: A stag deer. It was the same as his father's, hence why he initially thought it was James. Harry thought he saw his father's spirit, but he had done it himself, albeit a more powerful version since his effort earlier wasn't powerful enough, especially against a massive amount of Dementors.

What's explained better in the books is why Harry returns to the Dursleys every summer. The mother's love saved Harry that night, but it also continued to protect Harry in the home. The blessing would transfer to the home of a blood relative, Aunt Petunia, as long as Harry considered that his home. So by returning each summer, the Dursley home was safe from Voldemort. It also protected Petunia and her family. Harry's presence kept the house safe for both Harry and the Dursleys. Hogwarts (and the train) were guarded against Voldemort so Harry was safe there. I don't know what protected in the neighborhood of Little Whinging. There are magic ways of traveling. Hogwarts was closed to those so there became no way for Harry to leave Hogwarts except walking out the gate.

Lil things from the book that didn't make it, but are quite funny: McGonagall asking whose dying that year after the kids go to her class after the first class with Trelawney. Harry thought that Snape gave Lupin poison while he was having tea with him. Harry picturing a patronus as a huge bulky guy. The marauders map displayed more messages for Snape when he tried to read it.

The most pivotal and overlooked character in Harry Potter is the divination Professor Trelawney... Even here her prophecy was right, Servant and master were reunited in that pettigrew got away and went looking for voldemort.

A little clarification: Animagi cannot choose the animal they will turn into - it is the one that the holder resembles the most in spiritual sense (Pettigrew is the most obvious example: he's a dirty coward who RATTED his friends out). Study the names, Rowling doesn't choses names at random, they all have a symbolic meaning. Remus Lupin comes from, one, Remus, one of the twins who founded Rome, and two, Lupus, Latin for Wolf. Patronus also comes from Latin meaning Patreon (Protector), Expecto is exactly what gives to Expect in English, "I await the Protector". The Patronus also represent what you used as a happiest comfort to conjure it, here it's his father who was a Stag as an Animagus. Your Patronus can change form with your feelings (and thus what you use as memory to conjure it). Dementors are a symbol for depression and of course they were inspired by the Nazgul (O-b-viously, as Snape would say...) What makes that movie so good, aside of original camera work are all the set up-pay offs or Chekov's gun narratives implented throughout the movie. As you might have noticed, the Hippogriff doesn't come back in the movie, however, he does appear in the books, mostly in the fourth and fifth.

In the first war, there was a spell on Voldemort`s name. When people mentioned him, his followers appeared immediately and killed or tortured them. I don`t know why the young wizards aren`t taught about that. They were just told that his name was Tabu. So, all those who lived through the war with Voldemort and his followers are horrified by his name.

I've noticed a lot of reactors see Black's animal form as a wolf, especially when he first shows up at the start. I've always thought, from the books, that he was more like a black Lab, which can appear quite ferocious but is actually (usually) quite a friendly dog.

Those two actors used to be married (1989-1995). They played Benedick and Beatrice respectively in Branagh's movie version of Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing" (1993). Sir Michael Gambon (recipient of a Tony Award and multiple Olivier Awards) took over as Albus Dumbledore in Prisoner of Azkaban because of the death of Richard Harris, who had portrayed the headmaster in the first two movies. I first saw Michael Gambon in the TV mini-series The Singing Detective, and saw him onstage in London in Chekhov's "Uncle Vanya" in the late 1980s. His other movies include The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover (1989, directed by Peter Greenaway), and Gosford Park (2001, directed by Robert Altman).

McGonagall and Sirius are Animagi, so are Peter Pettigrew, James Potter, Rita Skeeter and others, not all of them registered what is necessary. They can transform at will into a certain animal, but it takes a lot of willpower and preperation to manage it. Even James and his Friends needed five years to do it for Lupin

This is my fav of the series for a variety of reasons.

Movie starts with Harry deliberately doing magic outside of school. Story opens with Harry almost getting in trouble because he unintentionally did magic outside of school. Nothing like a consistent narrative :D It isn't shown super well in the movie but Harry's Patronus actually fully takes the form of a stag. The movie makes it seem like the stag form was a hallucination or something when Harry later casts the spell, and an image of a stag hovers in a cone of light, but the first time you see the stag is actually more accurate. Except for the stag just standing there, emitting pulses of light. It charges at the dementors and acts more like a live creature.

Professor Sybil Trelawney is actually very important for the plot and in the books she actually makes more predictions and they do come true . She is awesome at seeing in the future ,but sometimes has problems with making the right interpretation

I had read a few times that Crookshanks is meant to have originally been Lily Potter's cat. That he was their cat and when Lily and James were killed and the house destroyed, he ran away and had a rough life before being caught and living in the pet shop for several years before being bought by Hermione. Mind you, I'm not claiming that it's fact, just reading a few times that this, afterwards, being relayed by the author to some ppl.

Funny that you mentioned making a TV show, they are now. They are rebooting the entire series as a television show. Each book in the series is going to be an entire season of shows. Supposedly an hour length or more of each episode though that might change. So they have enough time to show more of what was in the books.

It is sad that Richard Harris passed away but Michael Gambdon did really good taking over as Dumbledore.

The reason Harry's patronus was so powerful is that it has to be based on a happy thought. And Harry expected to see his father appear right before him to save them all. He expected to see his father; the patron of his family. Expecto Patronum. On the other hand, he was being a bit dim about it. "I saw my father, casting the same spell I just learned, wearing the exact same clothes I've been wearing all day.

even thou this is a great movie this is where they start to have problems with fitting everything from the books into the films. 44:00 for example the reason Harry though his dad saved him is because when they were in the shrieking shack after they capture Peter lupin and Black told Harry more about his father and their school days. Harry’s father’s patronus form was a stag. He also learned that the shrieking shack and whomping willow were put in place by dumbledore to help lupin have a safe place to restrain himself on full moon while he was in school. We also about the animagus as well.
