I do see that they make free shipping filtered if you go down and click on "see more like this" or whatever it is under the photo results that come up after a few clicks!

Basically...THe only interesting thing is that it's not a search algorithm so much as a bunch of suggestions.

To my mind, it’ll replace the kind of broad search where someone puts in wide reaching terms like “gift for her”, “mothers day gift”, “Christmas gift”… and they’ll go play around on gift mode instead. My problem with it is that they only have included very narrow range of product types… about three per result… eg, the candle lover gets soy candles, candle making kits, ceramic candle holders.. but no sign of beeswax candles or candle pillars etc…., which cuts out a huge swathe of potential giftable items for that recipient type… so whatever that buyer then gets inspired to go do a proper search for could be as narrowed down, compared to a wider range of idea inspo they might find by just searching a broad keyword. I really hope Etsy refresh their included categories regularly. I found it very limited and boring as a buyer, I suspect a lot of buyers will find it dull too.

I agree. You're probably right about the steps that people take. In general people start broad then narrow it down. IT's the people who are clueless about what they should buy who are the ones who will buy the first thing they see.

Thanks for the heads up and the inspiration. Speaking of print ads- Etsy is doing a campaign in New York City on the subway, on the stations' walls and inside trains. I'm working on the keyword and tags for my shop, making it more geared for gifts. . Also Super bawl is on my birthday February 11 :))

Randomly, I did notice an uptick in sales on a specific necklace in the past couple days and MEN have been purchasing this (rather unusual for my customer base). Coincidence!? It remains to be seen; I’ll investigate and update if I find out anything more concrete.

Could be. I don't know how they're going to report the sats on where the gift mode traffic will come from, so we need to see if they break it out separately.

I had a look round the gift mode options. I prefer seeing my options ordered according to price though. I suppose either it will become a more nuanced feature over time, or it will fade away like Etsy Explore seems to be doing.

I agree this is aimed at men and those who aren't the most spectacular at gift giving. Also, having an ad during the Super Bowl, which occurs before Valentine's Day reinforces this. The only thing that disappoints me, because my items are very much in the gift category, is every single item I saw when using Gift Mode is on sale.

Agreed. When I looked at other sections I saw some listings that weren't on sale, but in my particular category (jewelry), every listing was marked down. Guess we'll just have to wait and see how this plays out. @@KaraBuntin 😆

The new gift mode just takes people to some specific searches like "pressed flower jewelry" under the Nature lover persona and then other subcategory such flower child or something like that. I've already seen lots of my listings there, I guess because it's locally filtered or something, but it seems pretty ok and nothing alarming. Just another way of searching and giving gift ideas to customers, seems like a good idea to differentiate Etsy in a crowded market. They are now putting even more the accent in emotions, I guess. We always spend in gifts whatever is our situation, right?

I really think it's aimed at people who are so lazy and/or paralyzed by not wanting to buy the wrong thing, they'll buy anything to get it over with.

Noticed that there are no watermarks on any photos of items suggested using gift mode. Also (surprisingly) saw no infringing items in the gift mode search. The colors they picked for the gift mode are hideous. LOL

Other people said they saw a bunch of infringement, so experiences vary. Since this is a guided search everyone will see something different.

There was so much infringement when I tried it. A category called the anime fan came up; they actually had a collection dedicated to selling fan art!

I just gave it a quick try in an incognito window, and it just didn't seem to ask me for enough data to produce very helpful results. I was just testing, but I thought, okay, to be realistic, let's pretend I wanted to get my sister a birthday present using Gift Mode. It only asked me for three bits of data: who are you buying for (sister), what is the occasion (birthday) and what is one of her interests (there were only a handful of choices, and the only one that had anything at all to do with my sister was "pets"). If there was a way to continue the "conversation," I didn't notice it. The results were basically a bunch of dog toys. I'm not getting my sister a dog toy for her birthday. Maybe it will get better. But wouldn't it have a better shot if it had the user give the algorithms more to work with? Maybe instead of just a couple of multiple-choice questions, ask a fairly open-ended prompt like "Tell me about your sister!" and let the person type or dictate a few sentences into a text box. At first, the algorithms might not be able to do much with it, but that's where machine learning comes in, right? This minimal thing seems like a waste of time.

That’s all they give you now. The promise of “AI” Is there mainly for marketing as far as i can tell. It’s more using filters to show you a few things.

They say that the fans are nearly 50% female at this point, which I totally believe. I've been a huge football fan for over 20 years along with all the women in my family. Sadly, I'm a Dolphins fan. 😂

Gifts being a way to bring more men to the platform to up their gift giving game is a smart move actually. Will be interesting to see how that develops. 90% of my customer base is women and nearly 100% of that customer base would likely love a dude (boyfriend, husband, dad, brother) to gift them one of my products at some point. I personally hear from a lot of women who are buying g their OWN gift from me for said man in their life to gift. One obvious way to help these men out would be a shareable favorites list. Does that exist already? Like a list the giftee would create that could be sent directly to another user’s profile / dashboard / whatever.

It does exist. A lot of people don't know about it, but you can share your favorites with people and make collections within that group of favorites.

I’ve been on Etsy since 2008 and I did not know favorites lists are shareable! I figured as much! I’ll have to go play around with this feature …

It wasn’t there on mine either! It’s supposed to be at the bottom of the screen in the middle, it’s a little gift package icon.

Perhaps this Gift promo is a multi-tasking thing. Perhaps they want to test out and refine a new AI-pushed search engine model. This allows them to use our same SEO, hopefully gain a larger audience (handmade items are great for gifting, and maybe in a world that seems to be getting colder and more automated all the time, giving from small-businesses, as well as personalising, is a way for people to feel human despite it all), and have a good-enough reason to announce new things in an attempt to gain customers. From what I saw on another Etsy video is that they have a lot of refining still to do in their “select who you want to buy a gift for” menu and search choices. But hey, we all have to start somewhere. I would much rather see someone or a business TRY something to help instead of trying nothing, whining, and waiting for customers to come to it.

Yeah, which would drive me to abandon the guided search and just search myself. It might get better as time passes but it might not.
