Vishy Anand is here in Baku as the Deputy FIDE President. He is also present here as the official commentator for FIDE World Cup 2023. Before the start of the second round we speak to him about his role as the commentator, Gukesh maybe beating him to India no.1 spot - something that he has possessed for the last 37 years, working with the youngsters in WACA, the FIDE World Rapid Team Championships and much more. Vishy will always be Indian world no. 1 because none of the Indians that come after him would be there without his influence on chess to the next generation.

You need to move on ,and don't chain the new generation on the thing that they can accomplish. We know that Mr. Anand sir is great but you also need to make way for the younger generation. They are the future. I hope you understand my sentiments. You need to clear the way for them so they can have smooth sailing.

it has still quite not sunk with me How a person who was 1st to become a GM from his country also went on to become 1st in world. Think about lack of "giant shoulders" for him. He not only went to carve out a niche for himself in this obscure sport ( ironically in a country where the game originated ) but he also went on to become the guiding start for the generations to come. Vishy, unlike Tendulkar, had no Kapil Dev or 1983 World cup moment to get inspired from. This was solely his sheer passion and tremendous love for the 64 squares. No wonder even as a child when I was unaware of basic chess rules, I like most young guns was aware of his name and remarkable feat. But I was unaware he was the first Indian GM. Always assumed he must have other Indian GM predecessors. Good to now him that close through such interviews. Indeed a Bharat Ratna.

It was because of his such magnificent natural talent. I remember a video by ben finegold where he talks about how good vishy is. He said something like, you have no idea how deeply vishy, kasparov, fisher knew chess. Like the way they played and understood chess is just incomprehensible for any of the gms even. I love watching ben fanboy over vishy and the other greats!

Manuel Aaron - don't forget that name. I was in school with his son Arvind, so I always remember him. Manuel Aaron was India's first IM, and did a lot to promote chess in India, Chennai in particular. If I am not mistaken, there was another IM - Ravikumar who followed Aaron's footsteps.

I think there were cricketers before Sachin who people looked up to. Sachin is an all time great but Vishy like Sachin single handedly revolutionized chess in the country and he deserves to be commended.

Every single time my Dad sees a news story about Vishy he tells me the story of how a teenaged Vishy who'd just moved to Chennai from Manila beat him (and 9 others simultaneously) in a match lol. I've had the pleasure of meeting him once too, and he's just as polite and soft spoken in person as he is in the media. Classy guy, couldn't have picked a better person to be the face of the game in the country for the last 40 years. And he's reached the status of Tendulkar/Messi/Federer, for a couple generations of Indians he'll be the first name they could think of if they thought "chess" no matter what Pragg and Gukesh and the current youngsters can achieve.
